Dolores looked at the bracelet on her wrist and smiled. âWhy, do you have a special interest in feminine accessories?â Charles choked.
âNot reallyâ¦â
âWhy do you ask then?â asked Dolores sharply.
If she hadnât seen Victoriaâs portrait in her study by accident, she wouldnât have become so alert.
This jade bracelet was Victoriaâs. Now that he was asking her about her, Dolores unconsciously put herself on guard.
She clenched her fists silently, wondering what her relationship to Victoria was.
No one would put a picture of a stranger in his study, would they?
He put it on the desk. Obviously, he looked at it often.
Charles rubbed his forehead and laughed. âArenât you tired of thinking so much?â He had clearly sensed Doloresâs wariness of him.
âI donât know her in person. Iâve only seen her picture,â Charles said frankly. He placed the photo on the desk because he wanted to check if Dolores knew her. The photo was not placed there before.
Looking at the bracelet on her wrist, he continued, âIâve made you stay here because this jade bracelet looks exactly like that womanâs bracelet. I guess⦠you could be her daughter.â
Dolores was speechless.
She did not speak.
Charles did not insist on asking her.
âPlease go rest.â
Dolores frowned, still not believing what he had said. âYou donât know her, but you thought I was her daughter and made me stay here. Isnât it for her sake? Why would you do such a great favor for the sake of an unknown woman? Do you think Iâm going to believe that?â
Dolores did not hide her curiosity about his identity. âWhat is your relationship with her, is she related to you?â
Actually, she wanted to ask if they were mother and son.
She couldnât think of any other explanation. The only guess she had was that Charles was the son Victoria had with another man before she married Jayden.
However, in Doloresâ opinion, Victoria should not be that kind of woman.
Therefore, she was quite confused about this matter.
âLetâs make a deal, shall we?â suddenly suggested Charles.
Dolores thought for a moment and asked, âWhat kind of a deal?â
She didnât dare to agree to any kind of deal with him so easily.
âYou want to know who I am, and I can tell you, but you must answer me one question truthfully,â Charles said.
After thinking about it, Dolores said, âOkay.â
Compared to herself, she believed Charles had more secrets.
âThe lady first. Please ask.â Charles was fully prepared as he suggested the deal.
Dolores thought for a while and asked, âWhat are your parentsâ names? Where are they from? Where are they now?â
Charles frowned. âYou just asked a question?â
âYes, I did,â Dolores replied affirmatively without any sense of guilt. âI only asked one question about your parents, didnât I?â
Charles burst out laughing. He could not answer Doloresâ explanation at all. She was indeed sharp-tongued.
Looking depressed, he replied, âI donât know who my mother is, because I was an orphan. My adoptive fatherâs name is Nathan White, a local from White City. He was also the successor of the White Group. After his death, he asked me to take over the White Group. Before he died, he made a request of meâ¦â
He paused. His eyes, staring at Dolores, deepened. âHe expected me to marry the daughter of a woman named Victoria Forbis. I thought you were the girl.â
Dolores wondered if that was the reason why, after saving her, he had kept her here.
But, she couldnât help but wonder who her adoptive father Nathan was and what his relationship to Victoria was.
âIâm done answering you. Now itâs my turn.â Charles was quite calm. âAre you ready?â
Doloresâ brain was working quickly, wondering what he would ask her and how she would answer.
âAre you ready?â Charles urged her.
âYes.â Dolores looked up at him.
Charles raised his eyebrows slightly. âI have a business dinner this Saturday. Please be my escort to attend it.â
Dolores frowned, wondering if she had misheard something.
What had he said?
He had asked her to be his date to attend a business dinner, hadnât he?
âDidnât you want to ask me a question?â
âI donât think I can get to know you well with just a question, so Iâd rather make the most of the opportunity.â
Dolores was speechless.
âYou canât take back your words now. A human being must have integrity, mustnât he?â Charles smiled complacently.
âI wonât hurt you. I can probably surprise you.â He blinked, looking at her.
Dolores wasnât expecting much. As long as it wasnât panic instead of the supposed surprise, she would thank God.
âYour condition disobeys the rule. I can be your date, but you must promise one thing too.â
âI answered your question.â Charles blinked, realizing that Dolores was not willing to suffer any loss.
âThen please ask me a question instead.â Dolores raised her head. Obviously, she didnât want to cooperate with him. If he didnât promise her, she wouldnât agree to be his date.
Charles looked at her for a moment and said helplessly, âAll right. I can promise you one thing. Tell me what it is.â
âLet me make the calls.â
In all certainty, Charles knew she would ask.
âYes, you can, but you can only contact your family after you attend the business dinner with me.â
Dolores did some quick math: Saturday was still three or four days away. As long as she could contact her family, she was willing to wait and tolerate a few more days.
âGo to bed soon.â Charles smiled cheerfully at her.
The next few days passed quickly. After the doctorâs professional massage, Doloresâ ankle was almost recovered. She could now walk properly, but she would not be able to do so for long, as she had not fully recovered.
âMiss Flores, this is from the Young Master.â Amelia entered with a delicate box in her arms.
Dolores was twitching her ankle as she sat on the edge of the bed. Hearing her, she raised her head and asked, âWhatâs in the box?â
Amelia shook her head. She was very envious of Dolores, who could receive a gift from the Young Master.
âMiss Flores, wonât you open it and take a look?â Amelia stood beside the bed with the boxes in her hands. Looking at the expressionless Dolores, she added, âThe Young Master rarely gave a gift to others.â
She wondered why Dolores wasnât excited.
At least, Amelia had never seen the Young Master give a gift to others.
âYou can open it,â Dolores said casually.
Ameliaâs eyes widened in disbelief. âDo you want me to open the box for you?â Dolores thought about it for a moment. She didnât think it was very polite to ask someone else to open it, although she wasnât expecting any gifts from Charles. âIâll do it.â She reached out and opened the box.
Inside was a dress.
âGee!â exclaimed Amelia. âIsnât this dress the one you designed last time? The Young Master asked the tailor to make it.â
Dolores saw it too. She picked up the gown and felt the delicate silk satin, which gently draped and then stretched.
âItâs so beautiful!â Amelia stood stunned, touching it. âWhat material is it made of, why is it so soft and smooth?â
âItâs real watered gauze.â Dolores had not expected Charles to ask the tailor to make the dress using watered chiffon.
There were many imitations of watered gauze with high prices, but they were not the real fabric.
Watered gauze was known as the noble fabric in the weaving business. It also had other names such as âthe soft goldâ and âthe queen of fiberâ.
It was the highest quality fabric in silk products.
The craft was quite complex to produce this fabric. There were not many masters who could make this type of cloth, and the craft was on the verge of being lost.
Even Doloresâ knowledge of this fabric was found in books and on the Internet. She had only seen one dress made from the chiffon scattered in Mrs. Williamâs closet.
It was so valuable and rare that not many rich people could get such a dress.
She wondered where Charles had gotten this fabric. It was a large piece because his design was an evening gown with a long hemline, which would use a lot of fabric.
Amelia didnât understand anything about it. She just thought the style was pretty and the fabric was soft and silky, shiny. Although it was a long black dress, it didnât look dull or old. On the contrary, it looked elegant, graceful and sexy.
âYou will look very beautiful after you put it on.â Amelia deeply hid her envy.
âDo you like it?â
Dolores raised her head at the sound of Charlesâ voice, to discover that he was wearing a blue gingham suit with a light-colored tie. Even though he was sitting in a wheelchair, he still looked quite handsome.
