âCan I see mom now?â Matthew was holding Simona in his arms as they entered the hotel. She asked the question as she thought they had arrived at the destination and would soon meet Dolores.
Matthew was a little taken aback. Then he looked normal again. âSheâs playing hide and seek with us. She wants us to look for her. Now, we havenât found her yet.â
Simona pouted. âI see.â
White City wasnât very big. It was originally a county, but it was more like a large family, belonging to the White Group.
The hotel wasnât five-star, but it was nice in terms of atmosphere, hygiene, and service.
Boyce was holding Samuel, who was still sleeping in his arms, followed by some men holding their suitcases.
âThis is the best hotel in White City. Itâs not big. I hope you donât mind.â
Matthew had never stayed in a hotel like this before.
âIsnât this place good?â Simona blinked. She couldnât understand why Uncle Boyce had said that.
Matthew squeezed her head between his arms tightly so she wouldnât hear their conversation. Simona opened her eyes and stared at Matthewâs face. The corners of her eyes curved into a crescent shape.
âDaddy, youâre so handsome.â After she finished her words, she pressed her face into his arms shyly.
For some reason, Matthew was pleased by his daughterâs words. Since Dolores had disappeared, he had never smiled, but right now, he curved his lips into a smile at his daughterâs praise.
âDo you like me?â
The little girl answered without hesitation, âYes, I like you.â
Matthew kissed her hair. He hadnât washed his hair in the last two days, and the fragrance of the hair shampoo had faded. However, it still seemed to him that his daughter was scented.
Entering the room, Boyce put Samuel on the bed. He checked the surroundings. Since he knew Matthew wanted to stay in a quiet place, he had reserved all the rooms on this floor.
Simona jumped up and down in the room. âDad, will you give me a bath?â
Matthew nodded. âYes.â
He trotted over and held her long legs. Lifting her head, she said, âDad, you look a lot like Mom.â
Matthew lifted her chin with his fingers. âIn what way?â
âMommy gives me everything I want.â After answering the question, the little girl jumped up and trotted away.
On the other side, Charles scalded his back. It was not serious. There were several blisters. The doctor came over and took care of the scald for him.
Amelia stood in the doorway like a child who had made a mistake. Her eyes were red-rimmed and she seemed to have tears in her eyes.
Dolores was sitting in the chair next to the bed. âThank you.â
If I didnât protect her in time, now she would be the one lying on the bed.
âDo you really thank me?â Charles lay on his side on the bed.
Since the doctor had just put the medicine on his back, he could not lie on his back.
Otherwise, the wounds caused by the collected blister would tighten.
âOf course.â Dolores feared he would raise some unreasonable proposal, so she added, âAs long as I can do it.â
Charlie laughed. âDonât worry, please. I wonât ask you to marry me in return.â The corners of Doloresâ mouth twitched slightly.
He looked at her. âPlease get me a glass of water.â
Dolores reached out for the bottle of water on the desk. Amelia, who was standing in the doorway, hurried over. âPlease let me do it.â
She wanted to make amends for her previous faults by serving the Young Master well.
Charles looked at her indifferently. âAmelia, why do you continue to act so recklessly?â
Amelia was about to explain. He interrupted her and continued, âGo back to your room and close the door. You are grounded. Without my permission, you cannot appear in my room.â
âButâ¦â
âNo objection.â Her voice was cold.
âWho will take care of you, then?â Amelia wanted to stay. âYoung Master, I was wrong, itâs my fault. Please let me stay and take care of you.â
âAmelia, I canât be angry after Iâve been hurt. Do you want to make me angry on purpose?â His tone became more serious.
Normally, he was quite kind. Amelia was afraid to see him so cold and solemn. He didnât object at all, obediently leaving the room.
âYouâve frightened her. You didnât do it on purpose.â Dolores wanted to put in good words for Amelia. âShe cares for you very much.â
Charles, however, was in no mood to discuss such a matter with her. He deliberately changed the subject. âDo you want to kill me with thirst?â
Dolores could only get up and grab the water bottle to pour him a glass of water.
Just then, Charlesâ phone on the desk began to ring. Dolores realized she couldnât move fast, so she picked it up and handed it to him. âHere you go.â
Charles looked at the caller ID: it was from the hotel manager. He swiped his finger to answer.
âHello, Young Master. A group of strangers checked into the hotel today. They seemed quite important and booked the rooms on an entire level.â
Charles had told him earlier that he was to inform Charlie whenever outsiders arrived in White City in the last few days.
So, as soon as the outsiders checked in, the hotel manager made the call to Charles.
Charles looked up and stared at Dolores, who was pouring the water. He asked the manager, âDo you know where theyâre coming from?â
âFrom B-town. They have also brought two children. Now the whole plant has been banned. They donât need any service. Theyâll send their own men from downstairs to fetch what they want. We canât see them anymore. Is it those strangers you want to find?â
Since Dolores had disappeared, Charles was sure someone would come looking for her. He asked the hotel to pay attention to the strangers because he wanted to find the people who would come looking for her as soon as possible.
âI see.â He wasnât sure if those strangers would come looking for Dolores.
After hanging up the phone, Dolores handed him the glass of water.
Charles put the phone down. When he picked up the water, he pretended to unintentionally say, âSome strangers checked into the hotel. The hotel manager informed me.â
Dolores didnât take it to heart. She thought he was trying to strike up a conversation.
If he had any useful information, she didnât think he would tell her.
After Charles gulped the water, Dolores took the glass from his hand. When she grabbed the glass, Charles didnât let go of her hand. By accident, his fingertips touched her hand. Dolores pulled her hand away instantly.
Charles glanced at the position she had just touched, feeling as if her temperature was still there. The sensation was quite light. Her fingertips did not linger long, so the impression was not deep.
âIâm not poisonous, why are you so afraid of me?â
Dolores clenched both hands and became serious. âIâm not afraid of you. To tell you the truth, Iâm married. Iâll distance myself from any man, no matter if itâs you or anyone elseâ¦â
Just then, Dolores used her covenanted marriage to Matthew as an excuse to protect herself.
She had said she had children, something that either surprised Charles or he didnât believe at all.
Hearing this, Charles relaxed, resting half his face on the pillow. âHow old are you now? How come youâre married and have children? You must have said that because youâre afraid I mean you ill will.â
âYouâre an adult when you reach eighteen. I am twenty-four, going on twenty-five. Is it so strange that I am married and have two children?â Dolores repressed the discomfort in her heart.
She was not willing to talk about this subject.
It was not a pleasant experience for her.
The only good thing about the incident was that she had two adorable children.
Charles could sense the fluctuation in Doloresâ tone. She obviously didnât sound so nonchalant. It had been hard for her to speak.
He looked at Doloresâ hands which were clasped tightly. She laughed and said, âWhat kind of man have you married? You donât even have a wedding ring, why donât you divorce him? Iâll buy you one.â
Dolores looked down, but found nothing on her fingers. The jade bracelet was the only accessory on her wrist, which was Victoriaâs.
âI just havenât worn it.â She pretended to be calm.
Matthew and she had their own purposes in getting married, the marriage only lasted a month. Who would have bothered to buy the rings?
Charles didnât think she had married or had children.
He had to think about it, though, since there were strangers in the hotel now.
Looking at Dolores, he was lost in thought.
Dolores didnât want to be left alone with him. âPlease rest. I will now return to my room.â
After finishing her words, Dolores stood up and walked while holding onto the wall.
âAurora, wait a moment,â suddenly, Charles stopped her.
Dolores looked back. âWhatâs wrong?â
âYour jade bracelet is very pretty, where did you buy it?â
