Matthew hit the brakes in time and didnât hit the person who suddenly appeared.
Sampson stepped in front of the car. His gaze lingered on Dolores for a moment. Indeed, she and Matthew were together again.
Even with him hiding the truth he discovered this year, he couldnât help that she and Matthew were back together.
He looked sad, âI want to talk to you.â
Dolores wasnât prepared to see him appear so suddenly.
Until now, Dolores had deliberately avoided thinking or asking about the matter.
His appearance told her that what she was trying not to think about had really happened and that the brotherly Sampson in her mind had changed.
He had become someone she couldnât even recognize.
It even scared her.
âGet out of the way.â Matthewâs eyes were grim and his tone was cold enough to shatter glass.
Sampson didnât back down, but glared at Dolores, âLola, how many years have we known each other? I admit, this time it was my fault. Iâm really sorry for you, but to be fair, I treated you well before.â
âWhen I met you, you were a teenager. You played brave and strong for your brother, for your mother. You were so sensible for your age that it distressed people, do you remember?â
Dolores clenched her hand tightly and held her breath, not moving from her spot. In the past there was only hurt and pain. Her brotherâs death was a wound that never healed.
âThen you came back here to get married. Do you know why I came back here? Because of you.â She smiled bitterly, âLater you got divorced and had a car accident. Then I drove you away. Do you remember those dark days? When you were trying to keep your children safe, when you were going through all that pain, who was there for you all that time? Who helped you take care of your mother and took care of you?â
He recounted snippets of the times he had spent with her before, trying to tell her that he sincerely cared about her and liked her.
He couldnât make her love him, but ended up making her hate him.
âDo you really hate me, is there no affection for me in your heart?â
âStop it.â Dolores closed her eyes. She couldnât deny what he was saying.
He had hurt her, but she could not deny the good he had done for her in the past and how kind he had been to her.
She trembled uncontrollably, âWhat do you mean, just say it.â
Now that they had gotten to where they were, there was no turning back.
What he said was only to arouse her emotional affection for him.
He had once been kind to her.
Sampson smiled. He knew that as long as Dolores agreed to his request, everything between them would go up in smoke.
But there was no going back. None at all.
âLeave the Herbert Family alone.â
Dolores frowned-where was that coming from?
âWhat do you mean?â Dolores was puzzled.
Sampson glared at Matthew, âYou donât know, but he does.â
Matthewâs thoughts were caught up in Sampsonâs words. Come to think of it, even though he was destined to be with Dolores, he had only heard about her past and had never participated in any of it.
He had always avoided knowing his past, what he had been through and the kind of men he had known.
At this moment, she had the urge to know.
She leaned back and leaned her elbow on the car window casually. Sampsonâs actions made him feel great contempt, âWhat is this, you dare to do things, but you dare not take responsibility? And now you use these methods to survive?â
âI am willing to take full responsibility. Let Mary go and let the Herbert Family go. You did that to her; donât you feel guilty?â
Sampsonâs hands that hung beside his body clenched into fists.
In her knowledge, Matthew was not a good person, he showed no mercy to the woman who had once been with him.
Dolores was confused, what had happened?
Why didnât she know anything?
Matthew scoffed and did not respond to Sampsonâs words.
His lack of empathy, even human empathy, for her was because he had done things to erase his affection for her time and time again.
This time he had really crossed the line.
Maybe some people could tolerate that, but some people couldnât!
Dolores frowned and couldnât help but ask, âWhat the hell is going on?â Sampson asked her to look at the news headlines.
To understand the confusion, Dolores pulled out her phone to skim the news for the past two days. It was all about Samuelâs kidnapping.
All guns were pointed at the Herbert Family, saying they were thugs.
Dolores instantly sorted out the details of the affair.
That day Samuel said that Matthew had asked him to deliberately let himself go.
It turned out to be a drama.
Now the Herbert Familyâs reputation was damaged, so Sampson came to ask her to get Matthew to let himself be carried away by the Herbert Family.
Seriously, she hadnât expected Matthew to do this.
She was confused.
âLolaâ¦â
Dolores opened the car door to get out. Matthew grabbed her hand, apparently not wanting her to get out. Dolores smiled at him, âIâll just say a few words.â Matthew stared at her for a couple of seconds and then slowly let go of her hand.
Dolores got out of the car and walked over to Sampson. She looked at his face, which was suddenly so strange to her. She had known him for a long time, but she didnât know his heart at all.
âHave you changed? Or is it that I never knew you?â unknowingly, his eyes turned red, âYou must think Iâm heartless. Youâve known me for so long and cared for me, but I still donât want to accept youâ¦actually, Iâve thought about being with you and you donât know it, but your mother has come looking for me. She thinks we are not right for each other and she doesnât want me to be with you. Your sister was very hostile to me. So, even though I promised you, we will still be far apart.â
Her misty eyes disappointed him, âIâm telling you this, not to explain, but so that you wonât think Iâm a cruel and unfair person. Let us be strangers when we meet again in the future. I also think we should part with a good impression of each other in our hearts, after all, we exist in each otherâs world.â
Sampson frowned; her heart was extremely agitated. Had her mother sought her out?
âSo, you donât dislike me, itâs only because of my sister and my motherâ¦â
âNo.â Dolores interrupted him, âI donât like you. If you didnât have your mother and sister, I would have agreed to try to be with you. But it would have been just to repay you for being nice to me. I donât like you, much less love you.â He didnât like me and he knew it all too well.
Hope was lost and Sampson felt miserable.
âI promise.â Dolores made the decision.
After speaking, she turned away.
âWaitâ¦â Sampson stopped her, âDo you rememberâ¦?â
âStop talking.â Dolores interrupted him because he just wanted to talk about the past again.
She didnât want to listen to him anymore, it was all over here. There was nothing more to talk about.
Sampson had impulsively wanted to tell her the truth, but he calmed down after being interrupted and looked at Matthew, whose lips curved into a mocking, sarcastic smile.
âMatthew, youâre no better than me.â He had his own flesh and blood in front of him, but he didnât know? How sad was that?
Matthew was lazy to answer him and started the car.
As the car passed, Sampson turned his body to the side and as the car passed him, he said through the window, âDonât keep giving sincerity like a fool and be blind to whatâs in front of your eyes.â Dolores turned to look at him.
What did he mean?
