The door to the study opened and Thomas stood in the doorway, âIâve taken them to the living room.â
Jayden nodded.
âDonât worry, the matter is settled. You canât say anything anymore.â Jayden saw the concern in Victoriaâs eyes and comforted her.
Victoria lowered her raised eyebrows, âIâm not worried.â
âYou never admit it.â Jayden grabbed her hand, âCome on!â
In the living room, Landon was sitting on the mahogany sofa, tea was being poured for him and Warner was standing behind him.
Seeing Jayden approaching, Landon stood up, âJayden, this is a complete mess, I can only beg you.â
âBeg me?â Jayden laughed loudly, âDonât joke with me! Why would you beg me?â
Landon sighed heavily, âIf it wasnât for my two useless sons, this never would have happened.â
âWhat happened?â Jayden pulled Victoria with him and sat down on the couch across from Landon.
The servant served them tea as well.
âYou havenât seen the news today, have you?â Landon asked.
âNo.â
After retiring, Jayden no longer liked to watch the news and just spent his usual days with his Victoria, writing calligraphy, taking walks, or playing chess.
âMaybe you should take a look at this first.â Landon motioned for his son to show Jayden the news.
Warner handed him the phone.
Jayden looked at the news and was a little surprised. He wasnât surprised by the scandalousness of the news, but by the fact that the affair was happening in his family, why did he come to him?
It shouldnât have been difficult to cover up this affair with the Herbert Family connections.
âLandon, thisâ¦â Jayden raised his head and looked at Landon in front of him, âCould it have something to do with me?â
Why else would he go to him?
Landon sighed again, âIâm not as lucky as you. You had a good son, retired early and now quietly enjoying old age. My children only cause trouble and drive me crazy with rage.â
âLandon, why do you say that?â
âBecause of this.â Landon pointed to the child with blood on his face on the news. âThis boy, I hear heâs the son of the woman Matthew likes. Mary feels this woman broke off her engagement to Matthew. Andâ¦.âs embarrassing to sayâ¦Sampson likes this woman and she jumped the gun a little bitâ¦so she kidnapped her son to threaten her into leaving Matthew.â
Landon avoided the horrible things Sampson did and lightened the facts.
He didnât mention that his own daughter wanted to marry Matthew so that her family would benefit, or the fact that Sampson wanted to marry the woman.
Those things would damage his reputation.
Jayden and Victoria looked at each other.
Who was this woman?
And what was this about the child?
Wasnât that the reason his engagement ended with Dolores?
There was no picture of Dolores in the news, so they didnât know that this woman was indeed Dolores.
Matthew had not allowed Doloresâ picture to be published in the news.
He didnât want to get her on that news.
âThis affair must have set Matthew off, thatâs why Iâm here.â Landon sighed again. Even at this age, because of his childrenâs stupidity, he had to humiliate himself in front of his peers. His heart felt uncomfortable.
âWe are all people with reputations and status in society. If this spreads, I wonât be able to show my face anywhere. I wouldnât have come looking for you, but if a conflict arises between our families, it will only hurt both of us, donât you think?â
Landon knew how to negotiate. He wasnât here to ask for leniency, but he didnât want the two parties to come into conflict and damage the peace between them.
âYou also know my sonâs temper. If I could have controlled it, the engagement at that time would not have broken down.â Jayden was no fool. He couldnât just listen to Landonâs one-sided story and agree with him or promise him something.
Landonâs expression fell. Didnât Jayden care about this at all? He thought.
âJayden, even though we may not have been able to become in-laws, weâve known each other for a long time. Do you really want to see both families lose their peace over this little incident?â
âOur Matthew is not an unreasonable person. Of course, if someone provokes him first, we wonât ignore it. As you know, for a few years now, both father and son have been at loggerheads. But we will do our best, we will call you tonight to understand the situation clearly and give you our best advice.â Victoria spoke, her voice soft but firm. Her first sentence suggested that they had provoked Matthew first and were to blame, her last sentence made it clear that they did care but that it was a separate matter.
Landon was at a loss for words at her words.
âAs long as they both know, it would be best to keep the peace.â Landon stood up.
âOf course, we donât want to ruin the peace.â
Landon smiled reluctantly: âI should be going now.â
âStay for dinner.â Victoria smiled in a dignified manner.
âNo, weâre expected at home.â Landon declined.
âThomas, see them out.â Victoria did not see them off personally. Regardless of what happened next, right now they needed to be by Matthewâs side.
Obviously, the fault was theirs first.
She used her words carefully to let Landon know that if Matthew didnât let them go it would be their own fault. They had brought it on themselves.
They also had to realize that it hurt their friendship a lot.
âThereâs no need for you to see us out.â Warner said to Thomas as he headed for the door.
Thomas smiled and still opened the car door for Landon, âMadam asked me to see the guests off, how dare I be careless. Mr. Herbert, please.â Landon looked at him and climbed into the car.
Warner got into the driverâs seat.
The car soon left.
Watching the village get smaller in the rearview mirror, Landon exclaimed, âMatthew is really smart, not without cause. When the parents have such a high IQ, how can the son be stupid?â
He had just experienced Jaydenâs IQ and strategy.
Jaydenâs behavior right now surprised him.
âDad, what are you talking about? Matthewâs biological mother is Jaydenâs ex-wife.â â
Oh, yeah, look at me, Iâve gotten so old.â Landon held his forehead.
âDad, what if Jayden canât convince Matthew?â Warner was worried.
Landon thought for a long time, weighing all the options, distinguishing the pros and cons, but he kept thinking he could never openly attack the Nelson Family.
After all, they were big in the business now, he had no choice but to accept that he could not afford to offend the Nelson Family.
If he tried to fight back, only his family would suffer.
âHe who provokes is responsible.â Landon slowly closed his eyes.
It wasnât that he was heartless; it was just that he couldnât help but worry about his family in this situation.
If Matthew didnât let them go, the matter was bound to ferment.
If that happened, the Herbert Familyâs reputation was going to be ruined and it would surely affect the company. They were a jewelry business and could not bear the consequences of being boycotted.
Back in the Nelson Family parlorâ¦.
Jayden leaned back on the couch cushion, taking Victoriaâs hand and rubbing his thumb on the back of her hand. He squinted as if he was thinking about something.
âAre you thinking about who that woman is? And that child?â asked Victoria.
She felt strange, too. She had thought Matthew liked Dolores before, but now there was another woman with a child.
This worried her.
Jayden reached up and brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear. He said softly, âDonât worry, Iâll go to the villa to see him.
You will talk to him about this incident.
