âDad, Iâll go with you.â Warner stepped forward.
Landon nodded, âYes, you coming with me is a good idea.â
Among his three sons, his favorite was his oldest. Although he had no talent for business, he was steady and had never worried his family. Now, he was also taking care of the family business.
He looked at the other two again, and immediately felt angry again.
âThis matter is not resolved. You two canât go out. Stay home and think about what youâve done.â
âDadâ¦â
Maria wanted to explain that, although her intentions were selfish, it was true that she wanted to be useful to the family. If what happened hadnât happened, she was sure they wouldnât have treated them like this.
No sooner had she said that than she was held back by Sampson beside her, âStop talking!â
âWhy?â Maria was not convinced, âMy original intention was to do something for the family. I didnât succeed, but it shouldnât be unforgivable! Itâs unfair to treat us like this.â
Landon clutched his chest, extremely angry.
Not only was he not admitting his mistake, he was refusing to listen to his wordsâ¦.
âThatâs enough, stop talking! Canât you see Dadâs angry?â Warner scolded her.
âDonât pretend to be a good person in front of Daddy. Youâre just afraid Sampson and I will divide the family property and take away your position in the group. Thatâs why youâre pandering to Dad in every way you can-â
âEnough!â Landon slammed his hand on the table angrily and coughed. His face turned red as he continued to cough and Warner patted him on the back.
âItâs always been that way; Warner licks peopleâs boots outside and then comes home to lick Dadâs boots.â
Warner was the sole manager of the family business. Mary had been in the Herbert Family home for many years. Whenever she mentioned her desire to work in the business, Warner would make deliberate excuses to keep her from going.
Didnât this mean she was afraid of losing ownership?
âNow! Both of you get out of here! Go back to your rooms!â Camilla could no longer listen. They were all her own children; they were all equally important to her.
âLet her talk!â Landon opened his mouth. He was breathing hard, as if he was going to faint at any moment.
âDad! Is it fair to leave the company to Warner alone?â Maria had been unhappy for a long time, and now was her chance to say it all.
Warner looked at her silently.
Landon raised an eyebrow, âYouâre talking to me about being fair?â
He wasnât an old fool. He only attached importance to his oldest son, Warner, because he completely understood the situation.
Sampson went to study psychology, even though he disagreed with his decision, and became a psychiatrist. Now that he was back, he knew nothing about business. Especially in this competitive age, it wasnât easy.
Wasnât it too late to learn? Besides, was doing business something that could be learned?
Doing business takes skill, courage and vision.
Sampson had none.
And Mary, she was able to stay by Matthewâs side at first, not because she was capable and talented, but because of her childhood he took pity on her and let her stay by his side as his secretary.
She limited herself to serving tea, pouring water and organizing his daily schedule.
The most important thing was that she was a woman and was going to get married in the future.
Give her shares and let her take them to someone elseâs house?
It was out of the question.
And then there was Warner. She went to business school and apprenticed with him after graduation before taking over the company.
Although he wasnât outstanding, he had been in business for many years. He did not have the ability to grow the company, but he had accumulated enough experience and could maintain the status quo of the group.
Therefore, his eldest son had performed well enough to maintain power, so he also turned a blind eye.
âCalm down! Theyâre just kids, theyâre ignorant.â Camilla walked over and comforted him.
Landon snorted coldly, âKids? Theyâre over thirty.â
He looked at his wife, âNo one can leave without my permission.â
âOkay.â Camilla responded cautiously, for fear of offending him again.
Warner helped her up, âDad, letâs go now. Iâm afraid things will get out of hand.â
Now that momentum was falling, but time had been short and not many people knew it. If it was allowed to drag on for a couple more days, then it was going to be impossible to cope.
Landon also understood the seriousness of the matter, so he stood up using his son as support, âCall the driver to get the car ready.â
âIâll drive!â Warner said.
âOkay.â
Warner helped his father out.
Maria looked at Camilla, âMom, look how biased Dad is. He only believes in Warner and gives everything to him.â
How could she not know what her husband thought?
If Sampson was capable enough, he wouldnât have failed to involve him. And Mary was a child and had been lost as a child, so their relationship was not deep.
All this compared to Warnerâs hard work and thoughtfulness, Landon naturally leaned on him.
âYouâve just made a big mess. If you donât reflect on it and keep fighting with your family, how is your father going to be happy with you?â Camilla looked at her daughter, âYou are a woman and you will get married in the future. It doesnât matter whether you participate in the company or not.â
âIâm a woman? So what, Iâm not part of this family?â Maria didnât expect me to say this.
What decade was she living in?
What a patriarchy!
âEveryone wrote me off at first because I was a girl, why didnât they strangle me to death when I was born? Why did they still take me in? Would it have been better if they hadnât taken me in?â Maria began to cry and ran up the stairs.
Camillaâs body was shaking, almost unable to hold herself together.
Sampson came over to help her, âMom, donât be mad, Maria didnât mean to do it.â
Camilla waved her hand, âIf I get any angrier, Iâll die of rage. Help me go to my room.â
âYour father has said that the two of you are not allowed to go out. Donât leave the house for a few days, lest he gets angry again.â She explained to her son.
âOkay.â Sampson pursed his lips and said, âEven though we got in trouble this time, we really wanted to do something for our family, but we couldnât make it happen. I know it makes sense for Dad to lean on Warner, Iâve never been jealous of him, nor have I ever thought about taking power.â
Itâs not that he didnât have desires or hopes, itâs that his desire wasnât in power.
If it was really what he wanted, he would have done whatever it took to get it.
Just as with Dolores, he deliberately deceived her out of his own selfishness. As Maria said, he was indeed selfish.
He was just good at hiding it.
In the Nelson Familyâ¦
Jayden was practicing calligraphy in the studio. After turning the company over to his son, he had begun to completely ignore things. Calligraphy was his hobby.
Every afternoon, he would stay in the studio for three hours and Victoria would clean the ink stone for him.
Even though they were getting older, the scene was beautiful.
âWhat are you thinking about?â Jayden looked at Victoria who was staring out the window.
She came to her senses and continued grinding the inkstone, âNothing. I just miss my son.â
Jayden put a hand on her shoulder, âDo you regret it?â.
Just as Victoria was about to answer, there was a knock on the study door and Thomasâs voice was heard, âSomeone from the Herbert Family has come.â
âIsnât that matter already settled?â. Victoriaâs hand stopped in the middle of the ink grind, her tone was a little cold, âWhat have you come for?â
She thought it was because of the engagement cancellation.
They hadnât seen the news today, so they didnât know what had happened.
After Jayden finished his last stroke, he put the brush to the inkstone and said, âLetâs see.â
