Chapter 43: Chapter 43

I was eager to meet Liam all day. I could barely sit still at home. I knew I had to figure out a way to leave the house without Grandma finding out because she would blow her rockets if she knew that I was going to see Liam. When I got back from Darius' house, she told me that Darius had called her and informed her that I was not to leave the house. I wanted to march back to his house and knee him between his legs for that. He had no right to treat me like a child and when he did that, it only made me want to rebel more.

By five, I was dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt but I had no idea how to leave. The sky was already turning dark and Liam had texted me the address. I knew the street and it was famous for rented houses for tourists. The number of tourists in Lunarius was very little so the street was almost always deserted and it was at the edge of the woods.

I had almost given up on my idea to leave when Grandma came into my room to tell me that she needed to step out for a while. Chris was at home but I knew I could easily work my way around it. I waited until I heard her car drive down the street before I made my way out of my room.

Chris was seated in the living room and he raised a brow when he saw me. "Grandma said you aren't supposed to leave the house."

"If I give you ten dollars will you let me leave?" "Make it twenty and we have a deal."

I muttered a small curse under my breath but stuck my hand into my back pocket and retrieved a twenty-dollar bill. He took it with a small smile and made a show of sniffing the bill. I rolled my eyes at him and walked out the front door. It was already five thirty and I knew I was going to arrive at Liam's a bit late but it was better than not going at all.

I had to stop for gas and by the time I got to Liam's place, it was six fifteen. The road was completely deserted and I could have sworn that Liam's house was the only one currently occupied because everywhere else looked abandoned. I wondered why Liam chose this street of all places because there were better houses.

I called him when I got to his house because I was a bit confused and worried that I had the wrong place. When he walked out of the small paint-chipped house, I realized I was right.

"Hi," I began, unsure, as I got out of the car. "For a second I thought I was lost."

"Sorry to have made you drive all this way," he apologized. "I used to stay in a motel in town but I was suddenly evicted and this was the only place available. Please, come in."

I walked into the house while desperately trying to keep my mouth shut. I knew Darius had something to do with him being evicted and I made a mental note to confront him about it. The inside of the house was worse than the outside with molding walls and there was a smell as if something had died inside. I felt bad for Liam and I couldn't help but wonder what kept him staying here.

"Would you like something to drink?" he asked but I shook my head. "So, what brings you here?"

"I wanted to apologize on behalf of Darius. He should have never treated you like that. I have no idea what he was even doing in my house at that time. I'm so sorry."

"It's fine, you have nothing to worry about.” He waved me off. "Although I insist that you should have something to drink."

He stood to his feet before I could protest and returned with two bottles of water. I opened it myself to make sure the seal wasn't already broken and when I realized it wasn't, I didn't hesitate before drinking half of the bottle.

"I was wondering if we could have a do-over," I continued. "Preferably somewhere quiet where Darius can't find out."

"I'm all for that idea but first why don't you tell me why you're really here." "What do you mean?"

"You blink a lot when you lie or hide the truth and right now, that's what you're doing. Why don't you tell me what the real problem is?"

I hesitated because I wasn't sure how to breach the subject. With Darius, I never had to hold my words but with Liam, I wasn't sure what to say. I opened and closed my mouth repeatedly but no words would come out. Liam waited patiently for me to find the words I wanted to speak and finally, I sighed.

"I know you're a rogue," I began and he raised his brows but made no other indications that I had spoken. "As you might know, some girls have been turning up dead and Darius is convinced that you have something to do with it."

"I don't care what Darius thinks. What do you think?"

"I don't know what to think. I don't think you have anything to do with it, you don't look like you can hurt a fly. Darius is convinced though and it doesn't matter that I have told him a million times that you aren't the culprit."

"Does he know you're here?"

I scoffed. "Of course not, he would blow a fuse if he did. He was adamant that I stay away from you but he can't tell me what to do so here I am."

He hummed to himself and took a sip from his bottle of water before leaning back into

his chair. The silence and the way he stared at me was unnerving but I forced myself to stay immobile in the chair.

"Why are you so determined to believe me and fight for me when you don't even know me," he asked and I shrugged. "Your mate is just looking out for you, you should listen to him."

"How do you know that we're mates?"

"It's obvious," he offered up casually. "Anyone with eyes could see it. He made sure you smelled like him every time. He didn't mark you physically but he definitely left a mark."

There was an anger brewing behind his words and I began to feel uneasy so I cleared my throat.

"I should start heading back,” I began slowly. "I was banned from leaving the house

and my grandma should be back by now. They will be looking for me."

I started to rise from my chair but Liam reached out to keep me in place. "You can't leave so soon, we are just starting."

I pushed his hand off me and stood to my feet but my legs wobbled beneath me and Liam wrapped an arm around my waist and helped me back into my seat. My head began to pound but I was determined to keep my eyes on him.

"Do you know how hard it is to find blondes in this town?" he asked out of the blue. "I saw the newspaper today and I couldn't help but wonder how hard that person must have searched to find a blonde within the same age range who looked alike. In my entire time here, I have only seen about six blondes."

"I really should be going." I forced myself to my feet despite my shaky legs and started towards the door but Liam blocked me.

"I said we're not done."

He gripped my shoulders in a tight grip that had my skin aching and I knew I would bruise. Panic filled my lungs and I knew I had to do something about it urgently so I did the first thing I could think of and I reared my knee back and hit him as hard as I could between his legs. He crouched over in pain so I pushed him off me and ran over to the front door.

Thankfully, he left the key on it so I was able to unlock it and run out. I tried to open my car but I was dizzy and my vision was blurring. I heard a loud grown from inside the house and I knew I wouldn't be able to get my door open in time so I dashed into the woods for cover. I knew I was taking a huge risk by going into the woods but it was the only thing I could do.

I stumbled over my own feet but I didn't stop running. The sky had gotten dark and I could barely see in front of me but I didn't care. I heard growling and I hid behind a tree and peered into the open space. I saw Liam walk in and he looked furious.

"It would be easier for you if you just came out now," he yelled. "I have a better sense of smell than you could ever imagine. You do not want me to find you, Leindra."

I stayed silent and right in front of me, Liam transformed into a wolf and not just any wolf, the brown one I had seen in my window. A sob threatened to break from my lips and my eyes watered. Darius was right and if I had just listened to him then I wouldn't be in this mess.

I took a step back to run from him but I stepped on a twig and the crack was loud in the air.
