JULY
I WAS COMING BACK from my run but slowed down my pace when I saw the town car parked in front of our rented house.
Breathing hard, I took out my ear buds and watched as Mark Ashford got out of the car. We stood and stared at each other.
âHey, Mark.â I stepped forward to shake his hand.
âCongratulations to you and Buffalo for winning the cup.â
âThe Wolves could have made it if your goalie hadnât gotten hurt.â
He looked around the small front yard. âIs Krista home?â
âSheâs in New York, chasing a new client.â
He studied the house for a long moment before asking, âHow is she?â
âThey arrested Eduard. He pleaded out, so she doesnât have to testify, and sheâs been working hard at her comeback.â
âIt wonât take her long, but this contract will help a lot in clearing her name.â He handed me a thick envelope. âI wanted to deliver the contract myself and officially ask if youâd like to become part of the Wolves.â
This conversation wasnât a surprise. My agent and I had been in talks with the Wolves for weeks about their pending offer, but Markâs personal gesture was a surprise. âThat was unnecessary, but itâs appreciated.â
âI was surprised Krista wasnât part of your negotiations.â
âShe didnât want to be my agent.â
Mark grinned. âShe had enough?â
âShe said she would either be my agent or my wife, but not both.â
âThatâs fair. Does she know about my offer?â
I shook my head. âI didnât want to get her hopes up.â
He nodded. âPeople rarely surprise me, but you did. I underestimated you.â
My tone was serious. âI needed to grow the fuck up.â
A smile touched his lips. âYou needed some guidance, but you had a remarkable year.â
âI wouldnât be here if it werenât for you.â I worked to find the right words. âYou took a chance on my demo.â
âI would have been an idiot not to.â
I gestured with my head. âWant to come in for a drink?â
He shook his head. âNo, thanks. I have some fires I need to put out.â
âWhat kind of fires?â
âNothing you need to worry about.â
I studied the envelope. âI would have done anything to be with her. I would have even given up hockey.â
Mark gave me an amused smile. âI know. But I was never going to not sign you this fall.â
Our eyes met. âYou played me?â
He turned and opened the back door of the car. âI motivated you.â
I grabbed the door. âYou heading to New York?â
His eyes crinkled with his smile. âNeed a lift somewhere?â
SHE SAT in the lobby of her hotel, unaware of me. I stood and watched her as she typed on her laptop with concentration.
I moved to stand in front of her, but she didnât look up.
âDo I need to jump off the roof into the pool to get your attention?â
She lifted her head, and her eyes widened in surprise. âDonât you dare.â
I leaned down and dropped a kiss on her mouth. âYou trying to boss me around again?â
She gave me a look that went straight to my dick. âI never stopped.â
âWe should talk about this in your hotel room.â
She shut her laptop. âNot before you tell me why youâre here.â
I had been waiting for this moment for a long time. âHow do you feel about going home?â
She paused and then said slowly, âThe Wolves?â
âTheyâre offering ten years.â I handed her the contract and watched as she eagerly flipped through the pages.
âThis is incredible, Levi.â She lifted her face. âYour new agent did amazing.â
âYou want to move back home this fall?â
She flew into my arms. âYes.â
I wrapped my arms around her, knowing I would never get tired of this feeling. âIâm sorry it took me this long to get here.â
âIâm not.â
I pulled back to look at her.
âI mean it,â she gave me a shy look. âIâm happy.â
I captured her mouth with my own. âCan we go to your room now?â
She laughed. âYes.â
I watched her pack up her bag. âNow we can start booking venues for the wedding.â
Krista had never quite gotten on board with the whole big wedding thing, but between myself and Bea, we were winning her over. âOur big, fat, public wedding?â
I slung her laptop bag over my shoulder and put my arm around her. âThat one.â
âIâm still willing to elope.â
âBea would kill you.â
Her arm wrapped around my waist as we walked over to the elevator. âWeâre still married. Remind me again why are we having a wedding?â
I kissed her temple as we stood waiting for the elevator. âMainly for the honeymoon sex.â
Her laugh was music to my heart. âYouâre trouble.â
I reached down again and kissed her on the lips this time. âYou love it.â
