I get up on a Monday morning with a smile that I was incapable of taking off. I decide to put more effort into how I look by curling my hair, putting a little makeup on and changing into blue skinny jeans and a cute yellow top.
I didn't do much over the weekend other than text an old close friend from my old town. It's been a while since we last spoke and they mentioned that they might be coming to visit soon.
I grab my phone to text Cole when he's going to be here. If he stands me up and I'm late for school, I'm going to kill him. As soon as I hit send Cole's car pulls up outside, of course, just like Cole's timing for this to happen.
I could've just got Josh to take me to get my car over the weekend but I really couldn't be bothered to leave the house, plus the idea of Cole taking me to school makes me feel slightly... I'm not sure what the feeling is but I like the idea.
He rolls downs the window and his phone pings, he looks at it and looks back at me.
"Tsk tsk, patience is a virtue princess." Shaking his head in fake disappointment, I laugh as a response. I get in the car when the house door opens with Josh standing there.
"Where are you going?" He asks and he looks as if he's trying to downplay how pissed he is.
"Well, last time I checked it's a Monday morning and we have school so I'll give you one guess," I say jokingly.
"Fine," He says and turns he gaze onto Cole, "You're lucky we agreed to be civil." Josh grits his teeth while clenching his fists so they turn white.
Say what now?
"Wait I'm confused. Not that I don't think this getting along thing isn't a good idea, because it is, but-"
"It's being civil not getting alone." Josh corrects and I roll my eyes at his pettiness. Why's he so pedantic?
"What Mr Scrooge is trying to say here is," I correct Cole before he continues. Huh, I guess correcting people is a Mitchell thing.
"You do know Scrooge is Christmas right and it's not Christmas."
"Now's not the time for a literature lesson princess, it's not even half eight in the morning."
"Anyways, what I was saying is that we're trying to put our 'differences' aside for the sake of our senior year. Suspension after suspension isn't the way to go if we want to get good grades to graduate."
"Since when did you two care about grades." I tease.
"Yeah well, I agreed before I realised playboy over here probably did it because you're now hanging around him. So let me make one thing clear, make a move on her and I break our little 'agreement'."
"Really Josh? I was thinking you were the mature one."
Cole dramatically gasps, "Me? Not as mature as him? Never!"
I laugh and Josh rolls his eyes. "Well anyway, I think we should go, Mia should be here to pick you up in a minute, right?" My cousin huffs but nods.
The radio is on low and Cole is the first to speak.
"How are you today?" He takes his eyes off the road for a quick moment, looking at me, and then turns his attention back to driving.
"I'm better. I wanted to say thank you for Friday and for texting me over the weekend to check on me, I appreciate it."
"Not a problem. I'm just glad you're feeling better."
"Seriously Cole," I rest my hand on his spare one, "It means a lot." He looks at me with that look again, that god damn look I can't seem to figure out like his others. The one that makes my heart race ten times faster than it should.
I quickly pull my hand away, faking a cough to break the tension. "Um...What I'm trying to say is thank you for helping me, I was a mess."
He shakes his head in what I presume is disagreement while we pull into a parking space. The engine turns off and he looks at me with a serious expression.
"You weren't a mess princess, you were grieving," He leans over to tuck a loose strand of hair behind my ear. "You still are and that's okay." I look down hoping that the growing warmth in my chest disappears if I'm no longer looking at him.
It doesn't happen.
He moves his hovering hand away from my face. "Well looks like we're here." He says softly, smiling.
That smile, that stupid stupid smile. I hate it for what it does to me but I love it at the same.
He both get out of the car and Cole's friends, who I haven't officially met yet, head our way.
"Cole please tell this idiot that Thor is the best avenger. He has a hammer that only he is worthy of picking up." If I remember rightly, he is the one who tripped over the chair in the canteen, priceless.
The blonde shakes his head. "Well if you put it like that."
"Thank you! Now you've seen sense." He smiles in victory.
"Actually, what I was going to say is if you put it like that then you're more stupid than I thought." His expression drops and I can't help but snicker. "Captain America has his shield and is also worthy of the hammer. You've seen endgame, right? Or is your attention span that-"
Cole's friend with black hair cuts in, "Guys, seriously?" He gestures towards Cole and me.
"Sadly they're both always like this, especially Seph." He whispers so only I can hear but I'm just trying to figure out which one of them is Seph.
"Seriously Seph? You've been trying to win this argument for a week now, give in already." Cole groans. I laugh, they are not how I anticipated them be. Not that I know them at all yet, but I was expecting egotistical jerks.
"Sorry about them, I'm Ash." He waves at me.
"Hey." I smile and Cole introduces the other two to me.
"This is Seph, he can't go two minutes without talking or tripping over something and this is Bryce." I smile at them and realise I haven't told them my name yet.
"I'm Andie." All three of them stare at Cole while Ash wiggles his eyebrows.
"Oh, trust me, we know." Cole immediately glares at him and now I'm looking at Cole with my eyebrows raised. Cole interrupts before I can tease him.
"He's lying." I don't believe him for a second but the bells goes so I don't have a chance to comment.
"Well, I'm gonna go, catch you guys later." I smile and wave. Cole waves goodbye to me, smiling.
I get to my first lesson and halfway through I start to feel unwell and my stomach starts to cramp. Just great. I put my hand up hoping the teacher spots me quickly.
"Yes, Andie."
"Can I go to the bathroom?" She sighs but nods and I thank her before picking up my bag and leaving.
I hold my stomach as I make my way to the bathroom but two figures are making out against the lockers.
I shake my head in disgust, do people even have self-control nowadays? Like what's the point of coming to school if you're just going to skip to make out with someone?
Unfortunately, I have to walk past them to get to the bathroom. Even though I try to block out what they're doing, I still realise who it is.
It's Cole and some girl I've never seen before in my life. Upset and disappointment grow within me and I can't exactly identify why. I take a deep breath and walk passed, as quietly as I can, but Cole looks up.
Please don't notice me, please don't notice me, please don't notice me.
But of course, he turns his head.
No! Turn back around! Turn back around!
He sees me and I just look down and walk away as fast as I possibly can. I close the door to the bathroom and I still hear him.
"SHIT!" He shouts and hits what I guess is a locker. "You need to leave. Now." I've never heard his voice so cold in my life. He's not even talking to me and I have shivers. Why does he think it's okay to treat girls like that?
I can't seem to shake the hurt feeling I have. I don't know why, I have no reason to be. It's got to be my hormones, I'm just not thinking straight.
I walk out the bathroom and head back to my lesson and a massive wave of relief washes over me when I see that Cole and his hook up are no longer there.
*****
"Ugh! Please tell me you're joking!" I shake my head, sighing. "You know, I always thought he had a thing for you, or a soft spot, just anything. You know you-" The bells completely cut mia off and she groans.
"Come on, I was just about to eat my Doritos! I refuse to enter my lesson until I eat them. Screw calculus." I chuckle and we both go separate ways once saying goodbye.
I turn and spot Mia trying to eat her Doritos as quick as she can and I can't stop myself from laughing while walking to English.
I stop suddenly when I see Cole already in class but when I look at him he avoids all eye contact with me. Is this about earlier? I sit down beside Cole, awkwardly must I say, and grab all the books I need, putting them on my desk.
I can't be angry at him for earlier so I talk first, to see if it's me he has a problem with. Now that the teacher has starting speaking, I turn to Cole who is once again avoiding me like the plague.
"Psst, are you okay?" He looks at me for not even a second before turning his head back to the front of the class. His blank expression doesn't go unnoticed and I begin to worry it was something I did.
"Did I do anything wrong?" He looks at me again but this time his face softens when his eyes meet mine and I can't fight the smile that crawls onto my face.
"No, everything is fine. Just me being stupid, do you still need me to take you to get your car?" Damn that slipped my mind.
"I completely forgot about that and yes please." I smile sheepishly and Cole smiles. The teacher's hard gaze lands on us, "Aw man." I mumble. Cole bursts out laughing and the teacher glares at us.
"I'm not in the mood you two, get out of my class." She points to the door and I sigh.
What's her problem? It's not like we did anything too serious. Once we get out of class I punch his arm lightly. "Really! What was so funny that it had to get us sent out." I groan and he starts laughing again.
"It's your fault, if your reaction wasn't so funny I wouldn't have laughed."
"What reaction?" Cole continues to laugh but finally answers.
"Aw, man." He mimics in a high pitch voice.
"Please tell me that wasn't the reason why we got kicked out. How was that even funny?"
"It was adorable," he smiles, Aw man." He mocks me again and the mention that he thinks it was adorable makes me unintentionally blush.
"Can we just skip? It's the last lesson anyway." It would most probably be Cole who usually suggests skipping but surprisingly, today it's me.
Cole Jones, what have you turned me into?
He looks at me in disbelief and I shift uncomfortably while I wait for his response. However, knowing Cole, I think I can already guess what his answer is.
"Where's the real Andie Mitchell, this one's an imposter." I giggle. Oh god, brain, please tell me I didn't just giggle. Please save me from me.
"Are we gonna ditch or not?" I ask and he grins.
"Do you not remember the reputation I have to uphold?"I take that as a yes then.
"Lets go somewhere first before I take you to get your car." It doesn't take a lot to convince me, I agree almost immediately. "I have somewhere I want to take you." I look at him shocked but also excited.
"Really, Where?"
"Patience, princess." And that's what, the second time he's said that today?
"Whatever, Jones." I smile and he shakes his head.
"Seriously? Couldn't you come up with anything better other than Jones? Your lack of creativity is appalling princess." He says as we both close the car doors.
"You call me princess," I deadpan "I'll wait whilst you tell me the difference."
As he begins to speak I cut him off because I have the best nickname ever. Gosh, he's going to hate me forever.
"I've got one for you. You can't complain though, you brought this upon yourself." I smirk. I have to remind him to keep his eyes on the road as he keeps looking at me.
"Oh god, what is it?" He groans.
"Come on Coley Woley, no need to sound so excited." I pinch the side of his cheek that I can reach and his smiles drops. It takes everything in me not burst out laughing.
"No, you are not using that as my nickname. Ever."
"Yes, I am," I argue.
"No, you're not."
"Yes, I am."
"No, you're not."
"NO I'M NOT!"
"YES, YOU ARE!"
"Ha! I win!"
I scoff, "Only an idiot would fall for that." and Cole chuckles lowly. We don't speak much on the drive to where he's taking me and I start to think,
Maybe I'm the idiot for only just realising I'm on dangerous ground.
And I could fall at any moment...
