Figuring I still had some time to burn before Row arrived to deliver my well-deserved punch, I decided to hit the buildingâs gym. I frequented it every morning, and today was no different, but I needed to release some steam before this conversation.
I hit the StairMaster for twenty minutes before winging an all-body workout (I usually followed an A/B plan with two-day stretches and yoga to lengthen those godly limbs). It was toward the end of my workout when disaster struck. Sweaty and spent, I was reaching for the forty-pound dumbbells when someone grabbed a fifty-pound dumbbell from behind me and dropped it on my fingers. Pain exploded all over my knuckles. I hissed out, arching my back and tugging my fingers from beneath the crushing weight.
As it happened, I had help. Rowâwho I now spotted behind me in the mirrorâgrabbed me by the back of the neck and walked me toward the opposite wall, a snarl on his face.
âHello, bestie.â He slammed my back against the wall.
I dodged his fist when he sent it straight to my face, grabbed him by the base of his throat, and gave him a hard âdonât fuck with meâ squeeze.
Yeah, Iâd messed up with Dylan, but other than this one transgression, Iâd been an impeccable friend to him. In fact, if it werenât for me helping his wife with her grand gesture before they got married, heâd still be pining for her ass.
Row curled his fingers around the arm that was squeezing his throat, trying to pry my touch off. âYou have some fucking nerve, hitting me back,â Row growled.
I released him, and he stumbled backward, looking flushed and pissed off.
âYou came all the way to New York to take a cheap shot?â I shook my head. âDo you have no goddamn life at all? I wouldnât come to personally hit you if you fucked my own mother.â
âFirst of all, you hate your mother.â Row erected one finger. âSecond, sheâs not my taste.â A second finger. âThird, I warned you not to touch her.â He now raised his middle finger, sticking it in front of my face. âFourth, I was already on the way to a business meeting. Now, kindly tell me what in the ever-loving shit is going on here.â
I frowned down at my fingers, extending and curling them to make sure they werenât broken. What a prick my best friend was. Who did something like that? He knew this was my jerk-off hand.
âChrist, Row. Youâre insane.â I shook my head. âYou couldâve broken all my fingers.â
âAre you going to apologize for screwing my sister?â Row growled.
âNo,â I said honestly, looking up at him finally.
âNo?â His eyebrows jumped up. He was not expecting that answer.
âNo,â I confirmed. âIâve already pulled one shitty stunt on you by keeping this a secret. Iâm not going to lie to you again. Iâm not sorry it happened. In fact, I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. I would die a thousand deaths at your hands from now until eternity and still not regret the briefest touch I shared with your sister, so you might as well punch me now. Youâve sure as hell earned it.â
I thought this little speech would at least earn me a second of grace, but no. Row tilted his head back and laughed hysterically, as if Iâd just told him I was joining the circus as a goddamn contortionist.
âDrop the charade, Rhy. You canât catch feelings. Theyâre not transmitted via blow jobs.â
âWell, sorry to disappoint, but I do like your sister.â I sidestepped him, my shoulder crushing his purposely.
âLike her or love her?â he enquired.
âLike her enough to be mindful with her feelings. I give a shit, okay?â
He stalked out of the gym behind me. âGiving a shit is the bare minimum. And itâs usually enough if thereâre two people involved. But my niece is in the picture too. Did you ever stop to think about what you were walking into?â
I punched the elevator button and ground my teeth in annoyance.
Row clipped my shoulder. âNo, seriously, Coltridge. Iââ
âNo. You listen to me now, asshole.â I swiveled around sharply to face him. âI get it. You love your sister. Youâre protective of her. You have this shared, fucked-up past, blah, blah, blah. But in case you havenât noticed, she is a ball-busting hard-ass whoâd happily wrestle a shark for a bet. And win. To you, she is your baby sister. To the rest of the hetero male population, she is sex on fucking legs, with a smart mouth and funny tidbits and interesting observations to boot. You love her because she is your family. I loâlike her for all she is. You and I are not the same.â I pushed at his chest.
He stumbled backward, his face a mask of shock.
âAnd yes, I am aware she has a daughter. Iâve been spending a lot of time with both of them. Weâre both fucking grown-ups, and itâs time you deal with that.â
âI told Dylan Iâm backing off and letting her live her life,â Row said charitably, as if he had a choice in the matter. âBut that doesnât mean Iâm not going to warn you off. She deserves the world.â
âI will give her the entire goddamn galaxy,â I retorted.
The elevator pinged open, and I stepped inside.
âJust stay the hell out of my business, yeah?â
With that, I clapped his shoulder with a polite smile, let the doors slide closed, and went up to my penthouse.
