Veritas didnât insist on obtaining the Tower Masterâs ring, which was unexpected since Veritas had a history of being quite demanding.
âThis ring doesnât matter to you? You caused such a fuss when we acquired the magic stone before.â
The items that belong to you also belong to me. You and I share our existence. What you have is enough.
âWhat if I lose it?â
How would you lose something thatâs on your finger? The page is a pure chunk of magical energy. It can't be lost.
Veritas continued with a complex explanation, but Binaeril only half-listened.
âSo, I donât need to worry about it? Good.â
The Tower Master had said the ring was a token of a contract with a spirit.
âAre the other pages in similar forms? Like rings or necklaces?â
I donât know. I just told you, the pages are pure magic. They are likely to transform to suit their environment.
âI see.â
Binaeril imagined himself adorned with various trinkets all over his body.
Would he have to carry them all once he gathered all the pages?
For now, he decided to find the spirit contracted to the ring first.
âItâs been a while.â
His lair was as desolate as ever.
The spirit of the ring was there, where everything had begun.
Binaeril stepped into the Great Library, greeted by the familiar scent of almonds.
ââ¦Eden.â
Binaeril called out the spiritâs name.
A dusky-skinned girl peeked out from between the bookshelves.
âItâs been too long. Iâm sorry.â
Eden warmly welcomed him, rubbing her face against his pant leg.
Binaeril gently petted her. To him, Eden felt like a long-time pet.
âDo you recognize this?â
Binaeril showed the jade ring on his right hand.
Eden looked up at him with clear eyes and nodded.
The library spirit smiled warmly.
âItâs a gift from the Tower Master. Do you understand what Iâm saying?â
Eden danced in a circle around Binaeril, seeming to express her joy in her own way.
She curtsied deeply, lifting her earth-colored dress.
Binaeril recognized it as a sign of entrusting herself to him.
âHahaha.â
Eden dived like a swimmer into the ring on his finger.
âAlright, letâs go.â
Binaeril left the library with his only friend, the spirit.
After the scholar selection list was announced, Elfenbine was abuzz with noise.
Binaeril quietly asked the three gathered in the Deanâs study.
âIt seems quite noisy outside?â
âSigh⦠Indeed,â Dean Yulio replied, sounding troubled.
Rike looked down, dejected, while Sylvia seemed angry.
âWere you outside? What are the students saying?â
âTheyâre upset because the scholar selection was supposed to be based on tournament performance.â
âThatâs right.â
âBut they think the list isnât fair.â
âWhy?â
âBecause an imperial princess who didnât participate in the tournament was selected.â
âHey!â
Sylvia stood up abruptly.
âDo they even know who theyâre talking about? If you donât understand the situation, stay quiet.â
Binaeril blinked, staring at Sylvia.
âSylvia, itâs okay. Itâs not Binaerilâs fault.â
âBut, Princessâ¦!â
âItâs not entirely incorrect, is it? Rike was recommended because sheâs an imperial princess and the Deanâs student.â
Rike had a bitter expression.
Sylviaâs face turned hostile.
âYouâre talking like that because youâre not from the empire. Anyone who disrespects the Princess will be forgiven, even you.â
Binaeril calmly met Sylviaâs gaze.
âYou, at least, should support the Princess.â
âSylvia, stopâ¦â
âIâll step outside for a moment.â
Sylvia left, unable to contain her anger.
Dean Yulio sighed deeply.
âBinaeril is right. But Binaeril, youâre not surprised, are you? Even knowing Iâm an imperial princess.â
Binaeril exchanged a secret glance with Dean Yulio. The Dean had asked him to keep her identity a secret.
âWhether youâre an imperial princess or an emperor, it doesnât matter. It doesnât change our relationship.â
âBut you just implied I did something wrong.â
âNo? When? I just said that students without ability shouldnât benefit from their status or background.â
âIsnât that the same thing?â
Binaeril shook his head.
âYouâre different. Do you think youâre unworthy of being a scholar?â
âWhether it's favoritism or corruption or whatever, it doesnât matter. Just show them you have ability.â
âMy ability?â
âYes. Theyâre criticizing Frederica Albrecht, not talented mage Rike.â
âTalented mage Rikeâ¦â
She mulled over Binaerilâs evaluation.
âI believe in you. Thatâs why the Dean recommended you. Right?â
âIndeed.â
Dean Yulio nodded in agreement.
âBut how should I prove myself? The tournament is over, and my magic isnât as flashy as Binaerilâs to show offâ¦â
âWell, weâll figure that out. But first, we need to calm Sylvia.â
âShall I go?â
âNo. Iâll go. If you talk to her, sheâll just say, âYes, I understand,â without truly being convinced. Itâs better if I talk to her.â
Binaeril decided to speak with Sylvia.@@novelbin@@
She was on the terrace, feeling the breeze.
Even here, the noise from outside was clearly audible.
She felt the urge to block out the sound.
She was angry at the hesitant Princess, the unhelpful Dean, and the oblivious Binaeril.
Most of all, she hated the cold, blunt boy with grey hair.
âYou heartless jerkâ¦â
âHey, keep it down. The heartless jerk can hear you.â
The subject of her rant replied from behind her.
âI said it for you to hear. You like blunt truths, right?â
Binaeril nodded seriously, trying to ease the tension.
âTrue.â
âHow could you react like that in front of the Princess? What if sheâs hurt?â
âRike didnât mind. Youâre the one who seems upset.â
Rike approached provocatively, growling.
âJust because the Princess is pretending to be okay doesnât mean you can talk like that.â
âSheâs not pretending. She really is okay. Itâs not her fault.â
âThen whose fault is it?â
Binaeril stared at Sylvia before speaking.
âYours, isnât it?â
âFew could guess that âRikeâ is Princess Frederica of the Albrecht Empire. Someone already knew her identity.â
Binaeril pondered this as he listened to the studentsâ reactions.
âHow did they know Rike is an imperial princess?â
âOnly the Dean, Rike, and you knew her identity. No one else. She doesnât have close friends.â
Binaeril took a breath and continued.
âBut where is Gillian Bemis? Why hasnât he been seen since?â
Sylvia realized where things had gone wrong.
âI think her loyal guard, trying to protect her, might have revealed her identity. How does that sound?â
Binaeril hadnât come up with this perfect reasoning alone. Veritas had provided the hint.
âIt was my fault the Princess got into trouble.â
Sylvia didnât erupt in anger. She truly realized her mistake.
Binaeril saw the depth of her care for Rike.
âWhy do you protect Rike so much? Itâs more than just being a maid or guard.â
He could have asked Veritas but felt he shouldnât.
Sylvia and Rike shared a bond beyond master and servant.
âPrincess Frederica risked her life for my brother.â
âYour brother?â
âYes. For my brother, who was just a page.â
Binaeril remained silent, making it easier for Sylvia to continue.
âThe Emperor was strict. Even minor mistakes by servants led to beatings or scoldings. My brother was no exception, even as Fredericaâs personal page.â
Sylvia continued.
âPrincess Charlotte was kind, but Frederica was even more so. She cared about the servants being punished.â
The two were of similar age, so they grew close, despite the differences in status.
Then the Emperor fell ill, and central nobles didnât leave the princesses alone. Later, it was found that Fredericaâs food had been poisoned.â
âPoison?â
âMagic-processed poison that couldnât be detected by the empireâs means. My brother unknowingly fed her poison daily.â
Binaeril remembered that Rike had a unique constitution.
She could sense magic.
âHow did she know? But she knew she was being poisoned?â
âYes. She knew her young servant was poisoning her daily.â
âBut she still ate it?â
âYes. Do you know why?â
Binaeril had no idea.
âShe feared what would happen to my brother if it was discovered. To protect her servant friend, the princess consumed poison daily.â
Sylviaâs eyes looked numb.
Binaeril sensed that some memories erode a personâs emotions.
âThe truth eventually came out, and my brother was hanged. But after hearing everything, could I blame the princess?â
Sylviaâs final words were heavy.
She was a few years older than Binaeril and Rike but still not an adult.
Her words were too heavy for someone not yet an adult.
âI owe her a debt. The life of my brother.â
