âHeâs not.â
Adam turns. Frowns at the voice. âWhat are you doing here?â
âWow. What a greeting, Kent. Be careful not to pull a muscle thanking me for saving your ass.â
âYou lied to all of us.â
âYouâre welcome.â
âYou sedated my ten-year-old brother!â
âYouâre still welcome.â
âHey, Kenji.â I acknowledge him.
âMy clothes look good on you.â He steps a bit closer, smiles.
I roll my eyes. Adam examines my outfit for the first time.
âI didnât have anything else to wear,â I explain.
Adam nods a little slowly. Looks at Kenji. âDid you have a message to deliver?â
âYeah. Iâm supposed to show you where youâll be staying.â
âWhat do you mean?â
Kenji grins. âYou and James are going to be my new roommates.â
Adam swears under his breath.
âSorry, bro, but we donât have enough rooms for you and Hot Hands over here to have your own private space.â He winks at me. âNo offense.â
âI have to leave right now?â
âYeah, man. I want to go to sleep soon. I donât have all day to wait around for your lazy ass.â
âLazyâ?â
I hurry to interrupt before Adam has a chance to fight back. âWhat do you mean, you want to go to sleep? What time is it?â
âItâs almost ten at night,â Kenji tells me. âItâs hard to tell underground, but we all try to be aware of the clocks. We have monitors in the hallways, and most of us try to wear watches. Losing track of night and day can screw us up pretty quickly. And now is not the time to be getting too comfortable.â
âHow do you know Warner isnât dead?â I ask, nervous.
âWe just saw him on camera,â Kenji says. âHe and his men are patrolling this area pretty heavily. I managed to hear some of their conversation. Turns out Warner got shot.â
I suck in my breath, try to silence my heartbeats.
âThatâs why we got lucky last nightâapparently the soldiers got called back to base because they thought Warner was dead. There was a shift in power for a minute. No one knew what to do. What orders to follow. But then it turned out he wasnât dead. Just wounded pretty bad. His arm was all patched up and in a sling,â Kenji adds.
Adam finds his voice before I do. âHow safe is this place from attack?â
Kenji laughs. âSafe as hell. I donât even know how they managed to get as close as they did. But theyâll never be able to find our exact location. And even if they do, theyâll never be able to break in. Our security is just about impenetrable. Plus we have cameras everywhere. We can see what theyâre doing before they even plan it.
âIt doesnât really matter, though,â he goes on. âBecause theyâre looking for a fight, and so are we. Weâre not afraid of an attack. Besides, they have no idea what weâre capable of. And weâve been training for this shit forever.â
âDo youââ I pause. Flush. âCan youâI mean, do you have a . . . gift, too?â
Kenji smiles. And disappears.
Heâs really gone.
I stand up. Try to touch the space he was just standing in.
He reappears just in time to jump out of reach. âHEYâwhoa, carefulâjust because Iâm invisible doesnât mean I canât feel anythingââ
âOh!â I pull back. Cringe. âIâm sorryââ
âYou can make yourself invisible?â Adam looks more irritated than interested.
âJust blew your mind, didnât I?â
âHow long have you been spying on me?â Adam narrows his eyes.
âAs long as I needed to.â But his grin is laced with mischief.
âSo youâre . . . corporeal?â I ask.
âLook at you, using big fancy words.â Kenji crosses his arms. Leans against the wall.
âI meanâyou canât, like, walk through walls or anything, can you?â
He snorts. âNah, Iâm not a ghost. I can just . . . blend, I guess is the best word. I can blend into the background of any space. Shift myself to match my surrounds. Itâs taken me a long time to figure it out.â
âWow.â
âI used to follow Adam home. Thatâs how I knew where he lived. And thatâs how I was able to run awayâbecause they couldnât really see me. They tried to shoot at me anyway,â he adds, bitter, âbut I managed not to die, at least.â
âWait, but why were you following Adam home? I thought you were looking for me?â I ask him.
âYeahâwell, I enlisted shortly after we got wind of Warnerâs big project.â He nods in my direction. âWeâd been trying to find you, but Warner had more security clearance and access to more information than we didâwe were having a hard time tracking you down. Castle thought it would be easier to have someone on the inside paying attention to all the crazy shit Warner was planning. So when I heard that Adam was the main guy involved in this particular project and that he had this history with you, I sent the information to Castle. He told me to watch out for Adam, tooâyou know, in case Adam turned out to be just as psycho as Warner. We wanted to make sure he wasnât a threat to you or our plans. But I had no idea youâd try to run away together. Messed me the hell up.â
Weâre all silent for a moment.
âSo how much did you spy on me?â Adam asks him.
âWell, well, well.â Kenji cocks his head. âIs Mr. Adam Kent suddenly feeling a little intimidated?â
âDonât be a jackass.â
âYou hiding something?â
âYeah. My gunââ
âHey!â Kenji claps his hands together. âSo! Are we ready to get out of here, or what?â
âI need a pair of pants.â
Kenji looks abruptly annoyed. âSeriously, Kent? I donât want to hear that shit.â
âWell, unless you want to see me naked, I suggest you do something about it.â
Kenji shoots Adam a dirty look and stalks off, grumbling something about lending people all of his clothes. The door swings shut behind him.
âIâm not really naked,â Adam tells me.
âOh,â I gasp. Look up. My eyes betray me.
He canât bite back his grin in time. His fingers graze my cheek. âI just wanted him to leave us alone for a second.â
Iâm blushing through my bones. Fumbling for something to say. âIâm so happy youâre okay.â
He says something I donât hear.
Takes my hand. Pulls me up beside him.
Heâs leaning in and Iâm leaning in until Iâm practically on top of him and heâs slipping me into his arms and kissing me with a new kind of desperation, a new kind of passion, a burning need. His hands are threaded in my hair, his lips so soft, so urgent against mine, like fire and honey exploding in my mouth. My whole body is steaming.
Adam pulls back just a tiny bit. Kisses my bottom lip. Bites it for just a second. His skin is 100 degrees hotter than it was a moment ago. His lips are pressed against my neck and my hands are on a journey down his upper body and Iâm wondering why there are so many freight trains in my heart, why his chest is a broken harmonica. Iâm tracing the bird caught forever in flight on his skin and I realize for the first time that heâs given me wings of my own. Heâs helped me fly away and now Iâm stuck in centripetal motion, soaring right into the center of everything. I bring his lips back up to mine.
âJuliette,â he says. 1 breath. 1 kiss. 10 fingers teasing my skin. âI need to see you tonight.â
Yes.
Please.
2 hard knocks send us flying apart.
Kenji slams open the door. âYou do realize this wall is made of glass, donât you?â He looks like heâs bitten the head off a worm. âNo one wants to see that.â
He throws a pair of pants at Adam.
Nods to me. âCome on, Iâll take you to Sonya and Sara. Theyâll set you up for tonight.â Turns to Adam. âAnd donât ever give those pants back to me.â
âWhat if I donât want to sleep?â Adam asks, unabashed. âIâm not allowed to leave my room?â
Kenji presses his lips together. Narrows his eyes. âI will not use this word often, Kent, but please donât try any fancy secret-sneaking-away shit. We have to regulate things around here for a reason. Itâs the only way to survive. So do everyone a favor and keep your pants on. Youâll see her in the morning.â
But morning feels like a million years from now.
