Chapter Forty-Three
â Said The Spider To The Flyâ
"What the hell are you three doing?" Avalon asked as she walked into the boy's locker room making Mason and Corey while her brother just made a sad noise. "Scott tell me that you're not out on the field and you're in here moping?" Avalon asked incredulously, "He's still heartbroken cause of Hayden." Corey said making Avalon sigh.
"Oh my god. Liam, I'm not gonna sugar coat this. Get your sad ass up and get the hell out on the field. You're not loosing your captain status over a girl that you dated for six months. If it was even six months." Avalon said and Liam just made a noise, "Hayden left me." He said making her roll her eyes. "She moved. To protect her sister. And it's not like she dumped you or anything." Mason said and him and Corey put Liam's gear on him.
Avalon's phone buzzed making her pull it out and sigh, "Scott said Coach is losing it. You need to get out there." Avalon said and Liam made another noise, "Scott's leaving, too. And so are you, you're moving to France." He said as he tried to fall forward but Avalon and Corey pulled him up. "I am going to college in France. Scott is going to college, like three hours away? Going to college is not leaving. It's called growing up, maybe you should learn it, idiot." Avalon said and Mason nodded in agreement.
"And we all are going to be going to different colleges eventually." He said making Corey look at him confused, "I thought we were both applying to UCLA?" He asked making Mason shoot him a look and makes a cut throat gesture across his neck to stop Corey from talking. Liam, too, looks at Mason with an appalled expression, "You're going to the same college, too?" He asked and Avalon sighed as she ran a hand through her hair, which she had dyed the tips purple.
"You'll survive us moving." Avalon said and Liam groaned, "But you're moving to France." He said and she sighed. "That's not even the point." She said as Corey gives up on trying to put Liam's jersey on, and Mason grabs Liam's lacrosse stick before shoving it into Liam's arms, grabbing his helmet and sticking it on the end.
"Then what is the point?" Liam asked as Mason and Corey each take one of Liam's arms and lift him to his feet, though he does nothing to bear any of the weight of his body, causing Mason and Corey to stumble in their effort to drag him out of the room.
"The point is that summer's almost over. We're about to be seniors. This is about to be the best year of our entire lives, and you're still captain of the lacrosse team, so come on and-"
When Corey and Mason attempt to drag Liam backward out the locker room door, they trip on Liam's feet and all three of them tumble to the floor making Avalon sigh and pinch the bridge of her nose. "Alight, get up. I'm sick of your idiotic shit." Avalon said before pulling her brother up and pulling him down the hall.
"Just because you and Hayden broke up, Scott's going to college and I'm moving to France doesn't mean you're life is over. You have your senior year and lacrosse to focus on. You'll be fine." Avalon said and Liam looked at her, "How do you know?" He asked making her raise her eyebrows at him.
"Because I've both been through break ups before and now I'm moving with Malia. First relationships are rarely permanent. You'll find another girlfriend and you'll be fine." Avalon said and then stopped and turned to him when they made it to the door.
"Now, get your ass on the field and show Coach why you're team captain or else Coach is gonna make Diaz captain." Avalon said and Liam actually looked determined.
A few minutes later Avalon walked up to Scott and nodded making him sigh in relief. They both look out at the field to see Diaz is on a roll on the, easily spinning and dodging the attempts by the other players to block him from getting toward the goal. Nolan, who is playing goalie, looks terrified as Diaz prepares to lob the ball toward the goal behind him.
Just as Diaz forcefully throws the ball at him, Liam appears out of nowhere and does an impressive aerial spin, catching the ball with his lacrosse stick before landing lightly on his feet. Coach, Scott and Avalon run down the sideline watching Liam. "That's how you play lacrosse, McCall! Who is that kid? He's spectacular!" Coach asked making Avalon and Scott look at him weird.
"Coach, that's Liam." Scott said and Coach glanced back at them, "Well, how the hell am I supposed to tell them apart? They're all wearing the same thing!" He said irritably and Avalon furrow her brows. "They've got numbers on their jerseys." She said as her and Scott glanced at each other.
Liam runs toward the opposite goal with the ball until Diaz suddenly appears and tackles him hard, causing Liam to flip backward and land face-down on the grass as the other players shout around him.
Coach looks impressed by the tackle, but Scott and Avalon looks concerned, especially when they hear a low growl from Liam as he tries to get up. When Scott realizes that Liam is starting to shift, he frantically blows his whistle and thrusts his arms outward to communicate that he wants the other players to back off as him and Avalon run over.
When they reaches Liam, they crouch down to see that Liam's eyes are blazing bright gold as he growls uncontrollably. Scott squeezes Liam's shoulders with his hands as he tries to shield Liam's now-panicked face from view, "Liam! Your eyes!" Scott said.
Just then, Coach, looking appalled, starts to shout at them as he walks in their direction, and Avalon grabbed Liam's shoulders and turns him to the side so people don't see his eyes. "McCall! What the hell was that? That wasn't a foul- that's called winning."
Suddenly, the rest of the players, who have gathered around the three, begin to look scared as they whisper to each other. Avalon and Scott look over and their eyes widened before pulling Liam to his feet. In front of the group was a bloody, clearly-injured wolf slowly trotting out onto the field.
Nolan, who is closest to the wolf, gulps anxiously, seemingly frozen in fear while the others back up several steps. The wolf snarls at the group, keeping its eyes on Scott as saliva drips from its fangs. "Everyone back." Scott called out and everyone stepped back except for one player.
"Nolan." Avalon said but Nolan was still completely paralyzed by fear. "Hey man." Avalon said as she stepped forward and gently grabbed his shoulder, "What are you doing? You okay?" She asked but Nolan, still terrified, remains silent as he backs away even farther from the wolf while not taking his eyes off of it.
Scott steps up next to Avalon as the wolf once again snarls and growls at them. After a moment, Scott flashes his red eyes at the wolf, who whimpers before turning around and slowly retreating back into the woods, limping as though it has been badly injured.
Scott, Avalon and Liam share a concerned look before the three leave the rest of the team and follow the wolf into the woods without another word. "Do you think it's a wolf-wolf, or...?" Liam trailed off, "I think it was just a wolf." Avalon said.
They walk in silence until as they come upon another wolf, this one laying dead on the ground as though it had recently died. Their eyes widened when suddenly, hundreds of spiders begin pouring out of the wolf's eyes and mouth and scurry away. After a moment, Liam sees something in the distance and frowns, "Guys." He said making them look over and follow his line of sight.
About twenty feet away laid nearly a dozen more dead wolves scattered across the surrounding area.
â
"Wolves, or Werewolves?" Malia asked as she laid on her bed, reading a book about France while Lydia and Avalon stood in front of her. "I think it was just wolves." Avalon said and Malia flops onto her back and continues reading her book, "Not interested. You go."
"Liam was asking for help from the Werecoyote, not the Banshee or the Chimera." Lydia said after setting down a suitcase, "Why me?" Malia asked and Avalon shrugged slightly. "Maybe because you're the former animal. No one understands mysterious animal situations like you do."
Malia flops back onto her stomach and looks at Avalon and Lydia with her book still in her hands. "I'm done with mysterious animal situations. I want france with Avalon." She said and Avalon chuckled slightly and shook her head.
Lydia makes a face at Malia before noticing that the website tracking Malia's flight to Paris is blinking "REROUTED". "Your flight's delayed." Lydia said and Malia shook her head, "No, no... It's re-routed. There's a difference." She said making Avalon raised her eyebrows.
"Delayed is what happens when a flight is rerouted. So, we have plenty of time to help-" Avalon said but got distracted by another pop-up on Malia's laptop before continuing, "And now there's a storm system shutting down Charles DeGaulle Airport." She said.
Malia glances back to look at the computer before shrugging and returning to her book, "It's a minor shower." She said making Avalon and Lydia look at each other before they gave Malia a look. Malia sighs before turning around and slamming her laptop shut and arguing in a defensive voice.
"Liam's got everything covered. They were just dead wolves. It doesn't sound supernatural to me." Malia said and Avalon raised her eyebrows in amusement, "We're in Beacon Hills, everything weird is supernatural." Avalon said making her girlfriend give her a look. "We're going to France for your school. We cant miss it for supernatural." Malia said and Avalon shrugged slightly.
"I called the school earlier and they said it would be fine if I'm a month late or I can just start next year." Avalon said and Malia shook her head, "We're going to France." She said before looking back down at her book while Lydia and Avalon glanced at each other.
â
Malia and Avalon reluctantly walk down in the tunnels, where they join Liam and Mason who are examining a pile of dead rats on the ground. Mason had a disgusted look on his face as he pokes at the rats with a stick, and Malia seems irritable about the fact that she's been dragged down there.
"You've got two minutes." Malia said and Liam sighed and looked at her, "What do you think happened?" He asked and Malia crouched down to get a better look at the rats. "Rats freaked out, crawled all over each other..." She trailed off as she reached out to untangle one of the rats from the bundle making Avalon and Liam cringe.
"Got their tails knotted up. And tore each other apart trying to break free." Malia said as she pulls out one of the rats, holding it by the end of its tail. "You read up on rat kings?" Mason asked and Malia furrow her brows, "What's a rat king?" She asked stood to her feet, holding up the rat by the tail and examining it closely.
After a moment, she leans her head closer and sniffs at it while Avalon, Liam and Mason give her a grossed-out expression. She then holds out the rat toward the three teens, who instinctively jump away from it.
"Ohhhhh, I'm good, thank you!"
Mason, who looks as though he's going to throw up, backs into the intersection of tunnels and braces himself against the wall with one arm. "I'm good... just... over here." He said and Avalon, "I am going to take a bath in hand sanitizer." She mumbled.
Malia gives the three an impatient and annoyed look before turning her attention to Liam and Avalon specifically, still holding the rat close to them. "Can't you smell it? It's fear." She said and Liam, thoroughly disgusted by this entire situation, gently pushes Malia's arm toward the floor with his hand, leading her to drop the rat on the floor with the others.
"Yeah, it's the same as the ones in the math classroom." He said and Avalon furrowed her brows, "Why were there rats in a classroom?" She asked and Liam sighed softly. "They ran in during second period- about fifty of them." He said making Avalon hum slightly while Malia considers this for a moment before giving them a look.
"Your two minutes are up. Let's go Avalon." She said before turning to walk through the tunnels to leave, and Liam scoffs in frustration, "Wh-Where are you going?" He asked. "Paris with your sister. This isn't our problem." Malia said and Liam raised his eyebrows, "So, you think this is a problem?" He asked.
"Maybe. Probably. But you've got it covered, and Avalon got a plane to catch!" Malia called out and Avalon furrowed her brows, "Isn't it delayed?" She asked. "Re-routed!" Malia called back making Avalon sigh, "It's the same thing thing!" Avalon said before quickly running after her girlfriend.
â
Malia sat at her desk in her, anxiously staring at the screen of her MacBook, where she still has the status of her plane up on the internet. Avalon sat on Malia's bed reading a french textbook. Malia gulped nervously when she sees that the plane still delayed, but when she hits refresh, the screen says that the plane is now on time, making her eyes widen in happiness, "Oui oui!" She yelled as she stands and pumps her fists in the air happily making Avalon look at her.
"It's not delayed anymore?" Avalon asked and Malia smiled at her, "Nope! Let's go." She said as she kissed Avalon before grabbing her back. Avalon chuckled before closing the textbook and getting up, Malia grabbed her hand and the two started to walk out.
However, Malia face falls when they see Scott and Lydia standing in the doorway, blocking their exit. Exasperated, Malia points at them and waves it around as emphasis for what she's about to say. "No! No, no, no, no, no! It's just rats! Rats and wolves, and maybe a little bug problem."
"We need you." Lydia says and Malia shook her head, "And I need Paris and Avalon." She said and Avalon hummed slightly. "Paris has been around for two thousand years. It's not going anywhere. I doubt we'll miss anything." Avalon said and Malia gave her a look as though she feels betrayed, "Just your school." Malia said and Avalon just shrugged slightly.
Malia sighed I'm frustration before she turned around and heads for her window, intent on climbing out of it and running to the airport if necessary. Just as she unlocks the window they stop her, "Malia..." Scott trailed off, "Liam and Mason called-" Lydia went to say but Malia cut her off. "Yeah, they've got it covered." Malia said and Scott sighed. "We can't make you stay, and I don't want to try... But, we were hoping that you would want to." He said and Malia give them a look.
"I don't."
Scott, looking disappointed, shrugs and steps out of the way, "Okay." He said. Malia grabbed Avalon's hand making Avalon sigh softly as Malia started to pulled her away. Lydia, intent to convince them to stay, moves in front of the door to once again block her way. However, when the couple stops to look at her, Scott grabbed Lydia by the arm and pulls her out of the way so Malia and Avalon can leave.
They walked down the hallway before Avalon made Malia stop. She went to say something Malia help her finger up and spoke up first. "No, I know what you're gonna say. But we are going to France. Right now." Malia said and Avalon smiled at her, "Come on, it wont kill us to stay an extra few days. Think of it as one more supernatural adventure before we love countries." Avalon said and Malia shook her head.
"I'll make it up to you." Avalon said in a slight whisper before pulling Malia into a kiss making Malia sigh. "Fine." Malia said when they pulled away before walking back to the room making Avalon smile and quickly follow her.
Malia's bag flies through the door and hits the distracted Scott in the chest before she reluctantly walks back into her room with a scowl on her with Avalon following her. Scott and Malia look happy as Malia crosses her arms over her chest, "What are we supposed to do?" She asked.
"Find a Hellhound."
â
Scott drives the Jeep toward the high school, where Lydia is in the passenger seat and Malia and Avalon sitting in the backseat. "We opened a door to another world. And something came out with us. Now we need the Hellhound to stop it." Lydia explained and Malia shrugged, "So we put it back. We've put things back before."
Scott and Lydia share a concerned look, which made Avalon cock an eyebrow, "Why are you guys looking at each other like there's something you know that we don't know?" She asked and Scott sighed. "It might not be that simple." He said and Lydia nodded, "We guys saved Stiles and brought everyone back, but that's not how it was supposed to happen. There's always a price to pay." She said.
"We learned that from the Nemeton." Scott said and Malia's eyes widened slightly, "What kind of price? A big price?" She asked. "Big." Lydia said making Avalon sigh softly, "It's always a big price."
Scott, Avalon, Malia and Lydia pulled into the parking lot and quickly park before jumping out and looking around. "Okay, we should move pretty quickly." Scott said, "Do we even know what we let out?" Avalon asked and Scott sighed. "This Hellhound might be the only one who does."
Suddenly, the four hear loud roars coming from the wood, and without another word, they run off toward the sound. They finally made it to where Halwyn laid on the ground. The three are all horrified when they see him laying dead on the ground in a shallow ravine, his torso still riddled with deep, blood-soaked claw gashes. "I thought you couldn't kill a Hellhound." Lydia said.
Avalon furrowed her brows as she couched down next to him before a bullet casing next to her foot caught her eye. She picks it up, and her eyes widen in shock when she sees a fleur-de-lis stamped on it making her sigh softly. "Argent." She said as she stood up and handed it over to Scott.
"Then it's true." Lydia said making them look at her, "Then what's true?" Malia asked. Malia sees the scared look on Lydia's face and realizes that there is more to this situation that was revealed in the premonition the two had earlier. "What else did you hear?" Malia asked.
"The sound of people who have never lifted a hand against another human being." Lydia said and Avalon furrowed her brows, "Something was killing them?" She asked and Lydia frowns as she stares at the body as she slightly shook her head.
"They were killing each other."
â
Scott, Avalon, Malia, and Lydia are sitting at the end of Scott's bed, where the four of them are staring at Scott's phone in his hands and are debating what to do next. "In case anyone forgot-" Lydia started to say and Malia gave her a look, "Uhh..."
Lydia, realizing the unintentional pun she made regarding the Ghost Riders' memory-manipulation and reality erasing powers, rolls her eyes. "Yeah, I just said forgot." She said and looks at them with a serious expression before continuing what she was trying to say. "We almost lost him last time." She said and Scott and Avalon nodded in agreement, but Malia isn't as convinced.
"If this turns out to be something big, and we don't call him..." She trailed off and Scott nodded, "He would kill us." He said. "Maybe we should go back to the woods tonight and find the killer?" Malia suggested and Scott sighed. "You didn't hear his voice. He sounded really excited to be there." He said, "Just play the voicemail." Malia said and Scott pulls up the voicemail on his phone and plays it on speaker so the other two can hear it for themselves.
"Hey, Scott. So, I'm here- I'm in Quantico, Virginia, at the FBI. I'm at the fricking FBI! It's real. I'm really here." Scott smiled at the sound of Stiles' clearly happy voice as the girls concentrate on what he's saying. "And I already told Lydia that I miss her and I can't wait to get home, but listen, Scott."
"Whatever you're doing right now, just make sure you're still getting out of Beacon Hills. I mean, maybe you think you can't leave, you know, like the whole thing falls apart if you're not there, which, I get... But you have to. I know you're supposed to drive out tonight, so, if you don't call me back, just promise me you're actually going. Just get in the Jeep and go."
