Chapter 56 Upon hearing her words, Jay scrambled to his feet from the ground, trembling as he looked at lan. âMr. Hayes, Clara said she forgives me. Does that mean I can go now?â
lanâs voice was icy as he dismissed Jay with a single word. âScram!â
Eve, faced with such a formidable lan, didnât dare utter another word. She could only lead Jay and his mother away.
The grand hall returned to its serene state.
Casey let out a deep sigh. âWhat a dinnerâcompletely turned upside down by those clowns.â
Clara was quick to offer solace. âDad, Iâll have the kitchen whip up a few more dishes, and we can continue our meal. From now on, whatever drama the Bells stir up, it has nothing to do with us. In a way, itâs a blessing in disguise for us.â
âThatâs right. Weâre no longer their puppets. Weâll live our own lives.â
Casey, ushering the guests further in, called out to lan. âlan, youâve just come back. Iâll have them set another place at the table for you.â
Ian squeezed Claraâs hand, his voice deep. âThanks, Mr. Casey.â
Throughout it all, his grip never loosened. He felt as if Clara were a delicate bird, and if he let go, she might fly away and never return.
He had never felt such fear of loss before.
Chase, raising his glass to lan, teased him with laughter. âThatâs enough, man. If I didnât. know any better, Iâd say you two were joined at the hip.â
lan shot him a look. âIf youâre jealous, just say it. Donât bother with the snide remarks. They donât work on me.â
Chase, irked, gave lan a swift kick under the table. âJealous, my foot. Iâve got a woman at home, and my momâs on my case about getting married, okay?â
Sasha, overhearing their banter, exclaimed with mock surprise. âSurprise, surprise. The wild Dr. Chase, caught in the web of arranged marriage. Do tell, whatâs your wife like? Must be a real sight if youâre dragging your feet on tying the knot.â
âWhat are you talking about. My wife is dropâdead gorgeous, Iâll have you know, probably puts you to shame.â
âKeep dreaming, pal. If sheâs that stunning, why arenât you married already?â
âI want romance, is that too much to ask? Itâs the 21st century, and here we are talking about arranged marriages. I swear, right here, right now, if I cave and marry the woman theyâve picked out for me, Iâll kneel and call you âDaddy.â
Sasha clapped in delight. âThatâs the spirit, son. Iâll be waiting for that day.â
lan watched the two exchange barbs while his hand gently caressed Claraâs beneath the. table. Clara tried to pull away, but his grip was unyielding. He even purposefully caught Caseyâs attention.
âMr. Casey, that shirt looks great on you. Clara picked it out, didnât she?â
In their circle, a compliment from lan was a rare gem. Casey straightened his posture, smiling. âI think it looks sharp too. Claraâs got a good eye.â
lan nodded in agreement. âHer taste is impeccable, but sheâs been so busy lately. My wardrobeâs outdated. Iâm wearing the same shirt to work every day.â
Claraâs eyes widened in disbelief, as did everyone elseâs at the table. Ianâs closet could stock an entire boutique with the latest fashions. The idea of him running out of clothes. to wear was ludicrous.
Chase leaned in, whispering to Sasha with a chuckle, âLook at him, starting step one of the âWinning Her Backâ playbookâplaying the sympathy card.â
As expected, Casey immediately chimed in. âAfter dinner, Clara, you should take lan shopping for some new clothes. Youâve been taking care of me and neglecting lan. Tonight, you should move to his place. Iâll manage on my own.â
lanâs face remained impassive as he turned to Clara. âAlright, then. Weâll do as Mr. Casey says and spend the night at my place.â
