A Walk with the Devil

The silence between them stretched as they walked through the empty streets. Mia couldn't shake the feeling that she was doing something incredibly stupid.
Lorenzo De Luca wasn't just dangerousâhe was lethal. A man with blood on his hands, the kind of person her gut told her to avoid at all costs. And yet, here she was, walking side by side with him, his jacket still draped over her shoulders like a claim.
She stole another glance at him. He was tall, his sharp features illuminated by the occasional streetlamp. His suit fit him perfectly, but there was something about the way he movedâfluid, controlled, like a predator always ready to strike.
"Are you going to keep staring, or do you have something to say?" His voice broke the silence, smooth yet edged with amusement.
Mia snapped her gaze forward, heat creeping up her neck. "I wasn't staring."
His smirk was almost imperceptible. "Lying isn't your strong suit, is it?"
She scoffed. "I don't have a reason to lie."
Lorenzo hummed as if considering her words. "Good. I don't like liars."
Mia clenched her jaw. The way he spoke, the way he carried himselfâit was like he expected people to follow his every word.
"So, do you always save random women in alleys, or was tonight an exception?" she asked, crossing her arms.
Lorenzo exhaled sharply, a ghost of a laugh. "You think I make a habit of this?"
"I don't know what you make a habit of," she admitted. "But I do know men like you don't do things for free."
He glanced at her, something unreadable flickering behind his gray eyes. "You think I want something from you?"
Mia stopped walking. The air between them shifted.
"Don't you?" she challenged.
Lorenzo turned to face her fully, his expression unreadable. For a moment, she thought he wasn't going to answer. Thenâ
"No."
No explanation. No elaboration. Just that single, firm word.
Mia wasn't sure if that reassured her or unsettled her more.
She let out a breath and shook her head. "You're impossible."
Lorenzo smirked. "So I've been told."
They continued walking, the silence less tense this time. As they neared her apartment complex, Mia felt the weight of the night settling in. It had been a long day. Too long.
Finally, they stopped in front of her building.
"This is me," she said, turning to him.
Lorenzo nodded, his gaze flickering toward the entrance, as if assessing the area for threats. The habit of a man who never let his guard down.
Mia hesitated before shrugging off his jacket and holding it out to him. "Thanks. For this... and for earlier."
He didn't take the jacket immediately. Instead, his fingers brushed against hers as he finally grabbed it, the brief touch sending an unexpected jolt through her.
"Be careful, Mia." His voice was quieter this time, but there was something in itâsomething that felt almost... personal.
She frowned. "Why do I get the feeling you know something I don't?"
Lorenzo didn't answer. He just gave her one last look before turning on his heel and disappearing into the night.
Mia exhaled, running a hand through her hair.
What the hell had she just gotten herself into?
