AFTER BRIAN LEFT, SAMANTHA DROPPED herself onto the living room couch and sobbed. The tears didnât help, but she couldnât get them under control, either. By the time her sister came home, her eyes were puffy and swollen, her nose was raw, her throat burned, and her mind was numb.
She heard her sister come into the room.
âSamantha?â Kimberly asked softly. âAre you okay?â
Samantha could only shake her head no. She was afraid if she uttered a single word, she would start crying again.
âJake told me a little bit about whatâs going on,â Kimberly said. âI wonât pretend to understand what kind of relationship you and Brian have, but Iâm sorry he hurt you.â
âHe didnât hurt me,â Samantha said. âHe just doesnât come from the same perspective as I do. But Iâm scared weâll never be able to see things the same way.â It turned out she had some tears left after all.
âJake told me heâs trying to get Brian to go on a trip to Chicago. Maybe it would be best if Brian went; maybe some time apart would be good for the two of you.â
âMaybe,â Samantha squeaked. âI just wish things could be easier.â
âI know, sweetie.â Kimberly handed her sister a box of tissues. âYou know what? You and I should spend some quality sister time together. We havenât been doing that enough lately.â
Samantha blew her nose, then asked, âWhat about Scott?â
âScott and I are done. We broke up.â
Samantha gazed at her in surprise. âIâm so sorry Kim,â she said. âWhen did this happen?â
âThe other night. But we had been having problems for a while, as you probably guessed.â Kimberlyâs expression turned wry. âThank God he didnât know you and Brian were having problems, too.â
âWhy? What does that have to do with anything?â
Kimberly leaned back in the couch. âSam, the reason why Scott and I broke up is because he had a crush on you.â
Samantha stared at her sister. âWhat? Thatâs impossible. He and IâI neverââ
âI know,â Kimberly cut in. âYou never said anything or did anything to encourage him. Itâs not your fault.â
âI canât believe this,â Samantha said. âDid he tell you he liked me?â
âNot in so many words. At first, I thought he was just being a nice boyfriend by taking an interest in my sister. Then I realized his feelings went much deeper than just polite sentiment: he kept asking me questions about you, what youâre doing, who youâre with. It was like he was pumping me for information about you. It took me a while to get it, but once I did, I ended things.â
âKimberly, I am so sorry,â Samantha said again with equal parts anger and compassion. âI canât believe Scott would feel that way about me. Whyâ¦.â Her voice trailed off.
Kimberly gave her a thin smile. âLast week, after the break-in, he was furious you had gone to Brianâs house instead of letting him take you home so he could act the hero. I finally realized the only reason he was with me was to stay close to you. If it wasnât for you, I think he would have broken up with me a long time ago.â
âOh, God, Kimber. Iâm really sorry.â It felt like all Samantha could do was splutter apologies.
âItâs okay, Sam. Itâs not your fault. Iâm not telling you this to make you feel guilty. Although up until last week I was pretty pissed off,â she admitted. âBut you didnât do anything to lead Scott on. This was all in Scottâs head. And Iâm better off without him.â
âYes,â Samantha agreed. âYou are. Jesus. What an asshole.â
âYeah, I guess I attract assholes.â
âKim, I didnât mean it like that! I just meantââ
Kimberly laughed. âItâs okay. Itâs just another relationship-gone-bad story. And we all have them, donât we Sam?â
