âJAKE, I GAVE YOU THE keys to my house so you could get in in case of emergencyânot so you could walk in whenever you felt like it! What the hell were you thinking, coming into my dungeon unannounced?â Brian growled as soon as he saw his friend standing in his kitchen. Jake had the decency to blush and look down, shamefaced.
âIâm sorry,â he said quickly. âI came here looking for you, but then I heard screaming coming from downstairs, and I thought someone was getting hurt.â
âSomeone was getting hurt, thatâs the point of a dungeon,â Brian said, incredulous. âWhy would that make you come down and interrupt our scene?â
âBrian, Iâm really sorry,â Jake repeated. âReally, really sorry. Iâ¦I donât know what to say.â
Brian sighed and shook his head. âI donât know if Samantha will ever be able to look you in the eyes again,â he said. But his tone told Jake the peak of Brianâs anger had passed, and Jake was no longer in danger of getting his nose broken. Jake let out a breath of relief. The corners of his lips curved up.
âIâll make it up to her, I promise,â he said. âIn a few weeks, weâll all be laughing about this. Youâll see.â
âOh I donât think so,â Samantha said, striding into the kitchen and going straight to Brianâs side. Brian put a protective arm around her and kissed her forehead while Samantha shot Jake a venomous look.
âSamantha, Iâm really sorry,â Jake started again, putting his palms up. âI promise Iâll never enter Jakeâs dungeon without permission ever again, no matter what horrible noises are coming from down here.â
âI did not sound horrible,â Samantha seethed, rounding on him.
âNo, of course not, you sounded like you were having fun, and you looked like you were having fun, tooââ
âJake,â Brian warned.
âI only meantâJesus, Iâm an ass, and I know it, so please forgive me. Please?â
Samantha wanted to be able to stay mad at him, but he looked so shamefaced and apologetic, she felt like the only thing she could do was give in.
âOkay,â she said, moving away from Brian. âBut only if you promise never to mention this happened ever again, to anyone.â
âI promise. Weâll forget this ever happened.â
âNot fucking likely,â Samantha muttered under her breath. She opened the fridge door and peered inside. âYou want something to drink? We have juice.â
âUmâ¦yeah, sure.â Jake gave Brian a questioning look, as if to say why is this woman offering me juice from your fridge like she lives here? But Brian just smiled.
âSince you risked so much coming to find me, why donât you tell me what you want,â Brian said, motioning Jake to a chair. He and Jake sat down, and Samantha poured juice into three tall glasses. She did not join them at the table, but sipped from her glass standing up, leaning against the counter.
Jake passed her another glance, but decided to focus on the matter at hand.
âIâve got an investment opportunity in Chicago,â he said. âIf it works out, itâll be big. I want you in charge.â
âWhy didnât you call me?â Brian asked.
âYou didnât think I tried? Iâve been calling you for an hour.â
âIâve been kind of busy. You couldnât have waited until I checked my phone?â
âNo, thatâs just itâI need you on a plane by tomorrow. Tonight, if possible.â
Brianâs eyebrows furrowed. âHow long would this trip be for?â
âA month. Seven weeks, tops. Now Brianââ He put up his hands as Brian leaned back in his chair and shook his head.
âNo way, Jake. No way. Find somebody else.â
âThere is nobody else who can handle this deal. Now I understand you donât want to leave Samantha behindâyou two are obviously closer than I even thought,â he said, glancing Samanthaâs way. âBut hereâs an idea: take her with you. You two will have fun in Chicago. Who knows, you might fall in love with the place. Not enough to stay there, of courseâdonât stay there. But, enjoy it together. It could be like a working vacation.â
âA working vacation? Exactly how would that work?â
âYouâll have business meetings during the day, sure, but at nightâat night you can enjoy the Chicago scene with your pretty sub here. You two can discover a whole new kinky town, take in the sights, visit the clubs.â Seeing the flame spark in Brianâs eyes, he lowered his voice, injecting a tone of allure.
âI hear Chicago has some pretty interesting characters, Brian. Lots of masochists to play with, lots of submissives waiting for someone with a new bag of tricks, someone with your experience. What do you say?â By the look on Brianâs face, Jake knew he had blundered. Brian and Samantha were now looking at each other with sobering expressions. âWhat did I say?â
âItâs not going to happen, Jake,â Brian said. âIâm no longer available to play with anyone else. And you havenât asked Samantha if she can go.â Both men turned her way.
âI canât,â she said. âI have a shop to run, remember? I canât just close business for two months.â She looked at Brian. âBut that doesnât mean you shouldnât go. You should go. This is your job.â
âAnd you are my sub,â Brian answered. âIâm not going without you. If you donât go, I donât go. End of discussion.â
Jake blustered. âBrianââ
âEnd of discussion, Jake.â Brianâs eyes narrowed, and he gave Jake a piercing stare. Jake had the sense to shut up.
âFine, Iâll get someone else,â he said, rising from his chair. âBut if you change your mind, let me know.â
âI thought I had to be on a plane by tomorrow.â
âMaybe that was my impatience talking. You can have a few days to decide. Let me know if you can make this happen.â He gave Samantha a look of appeal, then showed himself out.
As soon as she heard the front door close, Samantha said, âThe trip does sound like fun, Brian.â
âYeah, it does. But Iâm not going without you.â
âBut if I werenât in the picture, youâd go, right?â
Brian turned around to stare at her. âWhy would you even ask that? You are in the picture.â
âI donât want you refusing to go on this trip on my account. If you want to go, donât let me stop you.â
âWeâve talked about this, Sam.â He came up to stand in front of her, and leaned his hands against the counter on either side of her body to encircle her with his own. âYouâre not stopping me. Iâm making a choice.â
âBut youâre making this choice because of me. If it wasnât for me, youâd go to Chicago and visit all those clubs and play with all those women and have fun.â
âIf it wasnât for you, Iâd be miserable. God, Samantha, why donât you see that?â He leaned his head against hers and closed his eyes. âThere is nothing worth pulling myself away from you for two months. Not all the women in the world would be able to cheer me up from missing you.â
Samantha hugged him around the waist. âBut what about the deal? Jake made it sound so important,â she said against his chest.
âJake has other people who can handle it. Iâm not available at this time.â He swayed with her in his arms. Then he leaned his lips close to her ear. âHowâs your ass?â
âFine,â she said, smiling. âDoesnât feel sore or anything.â
âGood,â Brian replied. âThen itâs up for round two?â
He laughed at Samanthaâs look of astonished fright.
