It happened on a hike.
To celebrate their eight year anniversary, Dylan and Olivia traveled back to one of their favorite places: Michigan. Most people who heard of their secret getaways to the Great Lake state always tilted their heads, knowing the actors could go anywhere in the world with the careers they had. Why would they stay in the states?
The truth was Dylan and Olivia adored Michigan, and more specifically, they adored having a week just the two of them at a lake house without any crazy schedules or paparazzi and interviewers questioning them about the newly announced Teen Wolf film. Soon, they would have to fly to Atlanta and begin filming so they wanted one last week between their projects to truly relax and be with each other.
On day three, the couple hiked along a nature preserve trail â one they knew by heart by now â with their hands intertwined. Most of the time, the only sound they could hear was the birds chirping, the light breeze blowing through the trees, and the crunch of gravel under their feet. Occasionally, one of them would exchange a story to make the other giggle, but at this point in their relationship, they didn't need to fill the space. They were comfortable with each other; that's all that mattered.
"I feel like every time we get to this section, you somehow magically end up behind me," Olivia teased her boyfriend, glancing at him over her shoulder as they climbed up a particularly steep section of rocks acting as stairs.
"What a coincidence," Dylan smiled, but she saw the mischievous twinkle in his whiskey eyes. "You know, it's just to keep you safe. Can't have you falling â I gotta be prepared to catch you."
Olivia chuckled, causing Dylan's smile to brighten more, but didn't say anything. A certain little box tucked into the waistband of her athletic capris kept her focused on reaching the top of the large hill, where the view opened up to see the sparkling blue lake with tall green trees springing up all around. The couple held a tradition of always propping one of their phones on a rock and doing auto-timed photos.
This time, Olivia was even more excited to take the photos. She had it all planned out, starting with them waking up even earlier to catch the sunrise. Also, instead of putting a timer, she'd merely record a video and pretend to pose with him, but then get down on one knee and propose to Dylan. Only two people knew of her plan; her mom and Tyler Posey. Her best friend had been the one to help her pick out the silver band with a mountain summit lightly carved into it. It was simple yet absolutely perfect.
Tyler had also been the one who completely freaked out when Olivia let him in on her scheme. She distinctly remembered him almost passing out, leading her to run and get him a cool cloth to place on his forehead. Once he was able to stand, he wrapping her in a huge hug and refused to let go. He couldn't stop blabbing about how he knew her and Dylan were going to be together forever years ago, and how proud of her he was for always making the first move. She was the one who kissed him first, after all.
Still, a nervous Olivia asked him if he thought Dylan would say yes. The couple had talked about marriage before, but always saw it as a future thing. Both had agreed they didn't need a huge ceremony or an official document to prove they cared for each other. They had each other's hearts and that was enough.
She felt much better when she heard Tyler scoff and reply, "Olivia, are you kidding? That boy has been wanting to marry you longer than you've been together."
So, with release of a shaky breath, and Dylan cluelessly waiting near the edge of the cliff, Olivia propped up her phone and hit record.
"Alright," Dylan held out his arm so he could wrap it around her waist when she got close enough. "What pose is first, string bean?"
"How about a normal one?" Olivia suggested, leaning into his side with a warm smile directed up to him. From this, Dylan noted the redness of her cheeks from the morning sun, with new freckled popping up along her skin. After all this time, still Olivia took his breath away.
So, instead of answering her, he merely leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to her pink lips. Olivia responded, even though it caught her off guard and grinned even wider when they pulled away. "And what was that for?" she asked him.
"I couldn't help myself," he replied honestly, their foreheads resting together. "And there's the fact that I love you."
"I love you, too," she said seriously, covering his hand on her waist with her own. She brought their intwined hands right in front of their chests. "A lot. And, if I'm honest with you and myself, I know that's never going to change. For eight years now, it's been you and me."
"Dyl and Livie," he agreed, even though he was slightly confused, with a smile that she immediately returned.
"That's right, we're Dyl and Livie," she nodded once before she hesitated, wondering if this was the right moment after all. But looking into his eyes, she knew it was. "I wanna be with you for the rest of my life, so....I was wondering...."
Livie knelt down, still holding his hand while her other grabbed the ring box from her waistband, and Dylan widened his eyes, the sheer surprise making him kneel down with her.
"Will you marry me?"
"Livie..."
Dylan cupped her cheeks with a joyous laugh Olivia would never forget, both of their eyes brimming with tears. Yet, his answer surprised her.
"I was going to ask you."
Olivia blinked. "What?"
Dylan kept one hand on her cheek, and used the other to grab a small box he had been hiding from his girlfriend for months. "I had plans to ask you tomorrow during dinner," he admitted, opening the lid to reveal a stunning silver engagement ring that almost resembled branches weaving around the rose quartz stone in the middle. He met her shocked blue eyes and the corners of his lips stretched wider before he stated, "You bet your ass I want to marry you."
Olivia leapt forward, wrapping her arms around his neck and instantly pulling him into a hug. Dylan gripped onto her just as tightly, his face burying itself in her neck.
It was a solid minute, the two just holding onto each other, before a realization struck Olivia.
"Wait a second," she leaned back and sniffled. He shot her a confused look. "Did you tell anyone you were planning this?"
"Only T-Pose," he answered, his head tilting to the side. He brushed some loose strands of hair out of her eyes. "Why?"
Olivia laughed. "That little punk!" she exclaimed. "He knew about you proposing yet still didn't say a word when I told him my idea. He even went with me to get your ring!" She showed him the silver band, and Dylan grinned.
"Well, look at that," he chuckled, shaking his head in disbelief. "He was there when I picked yours, too."
He carefully pulled Olivia's ring out from the box, his grin stretching more than he thought possible after seeing it perfectly slide on her finger.
Olivia matched his expression after seeing it. "Well, at least he helped us matching one's," she teased, Dylan agreeing with another laugh and a nod. She put his ring on his hand, before the two exchanged soft smiles.
Without hesitation, that two kissed again â Dylan's hands going to her waist while hers rested along the back of his dark hair. When they pulled apart to breathe, their noses brushed together and Dylan mumbled, "We're totally killing him when we get back to L.A., right?"
"Oh definitely."
Now, only a month later, the two were ready to be married, or rather, they were ready to elope. Neither wanted to drag on the engagement, due to their busy lives that often were more public than desired and nor did they wish for an extravagant ceremony. A simple day for them best.
So, only immediate family and close friends witnessed Dylan and Olivia tie the knot in a national park.
It had been a gorgeous day, the mountains coming alive and the sky celebrating with bright streaks of pink and gold. Tyler, right at Dylan's side, would tell everyone how the man cried before even seeing his bride in an elegant, long-sleeved white dress that curved along her hips and lightly flared out at the bottom. Her eyes sparkled even brighter from being outside, her hair twisted and pinned so not one stray piece could get in the way of looking at Dylan.
Their vows, written from the heart, though, made everyone weep. Dylan said his first.
"Livie, even on our wedding day, I can't bring myself to call you by your real name," he began, making her stifle a giggle. "Mostly because I've called you that since we met and because I love how it suits you. I'm even more blessed and excited to call you my wife. Never with anyone else do I feel as comfortable and loved as I do when I'm with you. You're my best friend," he paused to glance at a teary-eyed Tyler. "Sorry, buddy."
Their families (with Olivia's sister, Danielle as her maid of honor)
and friends, including some people they each knew before becoming famous, a few members of the Teen Wolf cast, Tom Holland and Zendaya, and Niall Horan and his wife, Haleigh, exchanged laughter before Dylan continued.
"When we first met, we didn't get along but that was more because I was a proper idiot," he stated. "Yet we bonded over Spider-Man, smoothies, pranks, and baseball...and I haven't looked back since. You make me come alive, Livie, and when I'm with you, I'm inspired to be a better person. Even though you've seen hardships, you continuously rise above them and remain kind â one of the kindest people I know. You have such a servant's heart in always knowing what to say or what to do, whether it be for me, our friends or our family. And I want you to know that I can be that person for you. I promise to trust you and to be your partner, meaning I promise to be someone you can depend on, someone to lean on. I promise to not only love you more as the days go on, but to support you, care for you, and simply be there for you whenever you need in whatever way you need. I want you in my life forever and I cannot wait to see where this journey takes us next."
He squeezed her hand, and matched her watery eyes and bright smile as he declared, "I love you."
"I love you, too," she whispered and snuck a glance to their small audience to joke, as she gently wiped her eyes, "Oh, gosh, how am I supposed to follow that?"
A few moments later, though, she did. There wasn't a dry eye anywhere to be seen.
"Dylan, I met you at a pivotal time in our lives," she started. "We were both young actors, honestly having no clue what we were doing with a best friend pestering us to just get along." Cue more chuckles and glances to Tyler, who shot Olivia a thumbs up and a cheesy grin through his tears. "And I'm so glad he did because if he hadn't, I would've missed out on you â the man who can make me laugh when all I want to do is cry, who patiently stands by my side and holds my hand when life seems to just be too much, and who makes me feel safe. I don't have to pretend when I'm with you. You protect me and make me feel like I'm royalty even though I don't deserve it," her voice cracked, allowing Dylan to interject.
"Yes, you do."
Olivia smiled. There she was, practically cutting off the circulation in his hand by squeezing it too tight, but there he went, exactly proving her point in the best way possible.
"On the days where it feels like the world might cave in, you are always there," she stated. "You've always been there and I couldn't imagine doing this life any other way. And I want to promise you, in front of these people who have cared and loved us, that if you need me, I will be there and I am here for you. I promise to never stop going on smoothie dates, or yelling at the TV with you when we watch the Mets play together. I promise to be your person, the one you can lean on and who refuses to let you go through this life alone."
She playfully shrugged, "Sorry, bub, you're stuck with me."
Dylan beamed as she concluded, "I love you so much and can't wait to start this new chapter together."
Then, after a few ceremonial things, the two finally kissed. Dylan being Dylan eagerly grabbed her by the waist, Olivia laughing and holding her veil to keep it from falling as he dipped her and pressed his lips to hers. Tyler probably cheered the loudest, pumping his fists over his head. However, his best friends were in their own little world. Just like they had when they got engaged, the couple brushed noses and kept their foreheads leaned together.
"You are so beautiful," Dylan murmured, unable to stop himself from kissing her again briefly. "I love you, Olivia."
The actress raised an eyebrow but wore a teasing smile. "Oh now that we're married, you're going to call me by my real name?"
"Only because it rolls right off the tongue," he replied, his eyes twinkling. "Olivia O'Brien sounds pretty good to me, string bean."
"Can't say I disagree," Olivia laughed, moving one of her hands to cup his cheek.
"Oh, and by the way, I love you, too."
