Dylan had no idea that he would fall in love at an aquarium.
But with Olivia's smile widening at every new fish and the little giggle of amusement that fell her pink lips, how could he not?
He could watch her all day, her blue eyes lit up with wonder. His heart beat out of his chest as she tugged his hand from tank to tank, joyful from seeing her watch the sea creatures. The walk-in tunnel became his favorite part, seeing her twirl as the ocean surrounded her. But then there also was the moment where she got to pet a shark and a squeal of excitement escaped her from feeling its skin. Or when in the gift shop, she found a plush dolphin that matched the one Dylan took a picture with and teased him.
He realized he loved every part of the aquarium, because he was in love with every part of her.
But he was leaving.
It wasn't a choice; he had to go back and finish filming the Maze Runner. Dylan knew that being in this movie would open up so many doors for his career, just like how Teen Wolf allowed him to get an audition for the movie to begin with.
But he hated leaving Olivia behind.
It was ironic, how he always wanted to be beside her when a few months ago they were at each other's throats. Dylan remembered the rants he used to give to Tyler about Olivia; how in season one it was like she couldn't be without her boyfriend, Chris. Every moment she had she was texting him, a stupid smile on her face. Tyler had been the one to point out Dylan was being jealous, but at that moment Dylan believed everything he felt towards Olivia was annoyance.
Now he knew Tyler had been right.
The thought of Olivia with her boyfriend a few years ago irritated him. Especially now that he knew that Chris broke Olivia's heart.
After they finished going through the aquarium, Dylan needed to go back to her house to get his stuff packed. But he took a little detour on the way back, stopping to get them some Blizzards from Dairy Queen.
He had played twenty one questions before, when he wanted to get to know someone. Olivia was the one to suggest the game, her feet on the dash with her Reese's ice cream in her hand. They were sitting in the parking lot, Dylan turned towards her.
She giggled once Dylan revealed his least favorite video of all time was when he recorded himself singing Wannabe by the Spice Girls.
"I remember the day I saw that for the first time," she was saying with a laugh. "I couldn't catch my breath, I was so weak."
Dylan teased her, "Well I'm glad my forever shame amused you." Dylan snuck a bite of his Oreo blizzard before asking, "Okay, my turn. How many boyfriends have you had?"
Olivia raised her eyebrows, "Woah, we're going there?"
"Heck yeah, we're going there," Dylan nodded with a grin, and then shrugged. "If it makes you feel better, I've only had two girlfriends."
"Does on-screen count?"
Dylan glanced at her from his ice cream, a smile fighting to take over his mouth. "No, on-screen does not count."
"Then just one."
Dylan couldn't really hide his surprise. "Wait, really?" The words stumbled out before he could stop them.
Confused, she scrunched her nose. "Yeah. Were you expecting me to say something else?"
"No, no," he quickly apologized, shaking his head. "I didn't mean anything by it, I swear. It's just I thought you've had other boyfriends besides Chris. He was your co-star, right?"
"Yeah, he was," she nodded, though her focus was towards her ice cream. Olivia didn't want to look Dylan in the eye, he observed. "Though I'm glad that chapter of my life is over."
"But I thought you loved the Secret Circle?"
"Oh, trust me I do," Olivia spoke up honestly. "I'm still great friends with Shelley and Phoebe, but the way Chris and I ended things wasn't the best."
Dylan noticed how the topic bugged her; the way she frowned at her ice cream and twirled her spoon aimlessly told him all he needed.
"I'm sorry I brought it up," he apologized. "I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable."
Her head shot up. "Oh, no, Dylan, you're perfectly okay," Olivia assured him, "We broke up over a year ago. It honestly shouldn't still bug me."
"But it's okay if it does," Dylan advised seriously. "Breakups are hard, and they don't always end in the way we want to. I remember before Teen Wolf, I dated a girl back home, Holly. Now, I thought she was perfect for me. We met sophomore year, because she was new, and we started dating a few months later. But, when I told her about getting the role of Stiles, she didn't react the way I thought she would."
Olivia, who was intently listening, asked, "What happened?"
Dylan let out a heavy sigh. "She...didn't want me to take the role."
"Wait, what?" Olivia couldn't believe her ears.
"Holly wanted me to stay home," Dylan clarified, nodding his head. "Before I got the call, we were planning on going to college together. I wanted to become a cinematographer; she wanted to be a preschool teacher."
"So what'd you do?"
"I had to break up with her," Dylan shared. "Even as hard as it was, even though I thought I loved her. She was making me feel guilty for going after my dream, and I realized I didn't deserve that. No one deserves to be guilt tripped for doing what they want to do."
"Chris was kind of the same way," Olivia spoke up to him, fiddling with her fingers. "Not that I want to like, compare him to Holly or make you feel like my relationship was worse than yours, because that's not want I mean-"
Dylan chuckled from her rambling, and leaned over to rest his hand over hers. "Trust me, Livie, I know that's not what you meant. I told you about Holly because I want you to know that I can relate with what you've been through. I want you to know that I care about you."
Olivia's heart swelled at his words, and the way he stared at her told her he meant everything. "I care about you too," she replied quietly, a small smile on her lips. "Chris and I...I thought we were in love. Kind of a naive thought, I guess, considering it was my first relationship. I met him through The Secret Circle; he was cast as a character named Jake. Chris was the one who asked me out after a week of working together, and thinking I liked him too, I said yes. Things were great for a while, I mean we dated for the rest of the show and even as Teen Wolf begun. But, he wasn't as supportive as I thought couples should be. He claimed I was talented but then got upset every time my agent called me with good news. Then, when Teen Wolf happened and there was talk about its potential, he blew up on me. In short, he didn't think I deserved a big role like that. Which is ridiculous because no one thought the show would get this big."
"It's also ridiculous because if anyone deserves a huge role, it's you," he agreed, causing her cheeks to flush. "So is that why you two broke it off?"
"That's what started the downfall, yeah," Olivia nodded, pursing her lips as she thought back to her relationship with Chris. "During the first season, I was obviously busy with you and Tyler. He was busy filming the Amazing Spider-Man. We started drifting apart and I tried so hard to make it work. I'd message him all the time but he wouldn't respond for days. Then he'd claim he was just busy."
"Then you ended it right?"
"You're forgetting he was my first boyfriend," Olivia smiles sadly. "I didn't want to let him go. So one day, I messaged Emma Stone, you know cause she played Gwen Stacy. We were good friends and I told her I wanted to surprise Chris on set. That day..."
Olivia had to pause, her eyes beginning to water. Dylan squeezed her hand as she let out a big sigh, but she tried to give him a smile. He knew it was forced.
"I don't know who she was," she started again slowly, "but I knew Chris really, really liked her. Because that was the way he used to look at me. And when I caught them, he tried to make me the guilty one. Said I didn't put enough effort into keeping him interested. And I was hurt, for a very long time. It made me doubt my worth and talent as an actress, and during season two I didn't feel like myself. Kind of ironic considering my character was going through a change too."
"I probably didn't make things better by acting like a jerk," Dylan said softly, his thumb running over the back over her hand repeatedly. "I had no idea about Chris and I'm sorry you had to go through that."
"I'm stronger for it," Olivia shrugged, tightening her grip on his hand. "And it's not like I was alone. I had Dani and Tyler. You even helped keep my mind off him by bickering with me. Holland, Crystal, Keira and Gage made me realize I deserve better."
Her eyes happened to flicker past the clock on the radio, and widened once she saw the time. "Oh my gosh, Dylan!" She exclaimed. "You still need to pack! We needed to leave my house in less than an hour."
Dylan chuckled, "Livie, it'll be fine. Most of my stuff was already in my suitcase anyways. I'd much rather be talking with you than getting ready to leave. Thanks for opening up to me; I know it wasn't easy. You're really strong, you know that?"
Olivia's cheeks burned from his statement, but her eyes lit up. "Thanks for being there," she replied to him. "And for giving me someone I can relate to. It means a lot."
"I'm always going to be here for you, especially since I wasn't before," Dylan promised. "If you need anything while I'm gone, you know you can always text me. Even if it's not right away, I swear I will always respond. To anything."
"You're going to be really busy, Dylan. You don't need to worry about me."
"No, I do need to," he disagreed. "Because you have wormed your way into my life, Livie Mason. And I don't wanna let you go. I wanna be as close to you as Stiles and Sierra are with one another."
