Chapter 896 Why Is Charlene Helping Us?
Brendan smiled and approached him. âUncle Zimmer.â
Mr. Zimmer was stunned for a moment. He walked over and said, âWell done.â âI was hoping that you wouldnât mind it, Uncle Zimmer. I had to hide from everyone before the situation came to an end.â âWhy would I mind?â Mr. Zimmer appeared to be in a daze for a moment. Soon afterward, he smiled and patted Brendanâs shoulder. âYou saw through Desmond and the others before me. Iâm delighted you have a keen sense of people and can implement solid measures. It seems it is totally fine to hand over the company to you so I can set my mind at ease and retireâ¦â
As he was speaking, he took a glance at Deirdre. âIâm sorry, Miss McKinnon.â
Deirdre was surprised that a senior like him would lower himself to apologize to her. She lowered her eyes and said, âYou donât need to apologize, Mr. Zimmer. I remembered you helping me previously too.â âNo, that is not the same thing. At the time, I thought that you were⦠I treated you in a very poor manner indeed, and Iâve never regarded you as a decent, proper girl. I was too shallow-minded.â Mr.
Zimmer was ashamed of himself. âHowever, I can set my mind at ease with the current situation. Your motherâs situation is justified as well⦠If thereâs nothing else, I shall make a move first.â
Mr. Zimmer left in a rush.
Deirdre and Brendan walked outside together. She went from feeling weighed down initially to surprisingly relaxed at this very moment.
She was having a hard time accepting that the situation would end in this manner.
After taking a seat in the passenger seat, she asked, âCharlene⦠why is she helping us? It doesnât seem like herâ¦â
Brendan helped to fasten her seatbelt, and his lips curled up beyond his notice. âI knew you couldnât stand it anymore, and youâd ask me.â
In the ward, Charlene was caught by surprise when someone slapped her. The room was pitch black, and her eyes were reddened. She could not care about her leg injury when she repeatedly bowed to apologize. âIâm sorry, Iâm sorryâ¦â
The person could not be bothered by her piteous demeanor, kicking her until she toppled to the floor.
âYou piece of sh*t!â
Charlene bit her lower lip tightly while the man pulled her up by her hair.â This is supposed to be a grand opportunity to take control of the Brighthall Group and get rid of Brendan. Yet, you just canât do anything right. You actually commissioned those people to attack Deirdre and create the opportunity for Brendan!â âIt wasnât intentional! I didnât do that on purpose!â Charlene was crying from fear. âI thought that Brendan would be so distracted by the hectic situation that he wouldnât be paying attention to Deirdre!
âI hate her too much, which is why I figured Iâd use that method to seek revenge on her. But, I did not expect those people to be so bad at keeping a tight lid and confessing that Iâm the culprit under torture!â
Tears streamed down Charleneâs face. âIf I didnât do as Brendanâs order, he would expose the voice clip⦠Iâm scared-â
The man gave her a tight slap with a ghastly expression.
He bent his fingers and pulled out long scratch marks on Charleneâs face, her body shivering from the pain.
âThose are all dumb excuses!â The man calmed down with great effort and narrowed his eyes. âNow the problem is that Desmond is involved as well. From today onward, I will call the shots, and if you dare to defy me, I will decapitate you even before Brendan can do it himself!â âDonât ever forget who gave you a new life such that you can be with Brendan safely. If I can give you a new life, I can give you death too!â
Charlene begged for mercy with all her might. âI⦠I understand! I wonât do it again!â
Charlene clutched the collar of her top tightly with a sharp glint glistening in her eyes when she heard the sound of a door slamming echo in the room.
