Chapter 799 We Have News From There âIf I were to tell you that I was completely unaware of the things that happened to you in prison, would you still hate me so much?â
Brendanâs dark eyes glistened while his voice was tainted with drunkenness and hope.
It was as if he were hoping to hear an answer that he wanted from Deirdre.
âNo.â
In the next moment, his enthusiasm was dampened by the womanâs cold tone.
Deirdreâs expression was filled with hatred. âIf you did those things that hurt me because you hated me, I could only convince myself that I deserved what I got even if I couldnât make sense of it. However, if you let me go through all those things when you werenât even planning to hurt me, I will only hate you more.â
The womanâs remark sounded crystal clear and put Brendanâs eager heart down in the dumps.
He felt powerless. âYou should sleep.â
He lowered his gaze and got up from the bed next to her before walking out of the room.
The room became quiet and empty instantly, leaving only the sound of the howling wind outside.
Deirdre stopped herself from shaking and told herself, âCalm down. He is Brendan, the devil that commits all sorts of heinous sins. Kyran is only a camouflage that he created meticulously.â
Mrs. Engel was surprised to see Brendan leaving the room and stopped herself from turning off the light.
âAre you not going to sleep in Mrs. Brighthallâs room, Mr. Brighthall?â
âNo.â Brendan massaged his tired forehead with his fingers. âSheâs pregnant, and Iâve had one too many drinks today. I might hurt her accidentally.â
âSo⦠I shall prepare the guest room then!â
âItâs fine.â Brendan said, âYou should go get some rest. Iâll sleep in the study tonight.â
âHowever-ââ
âGo.â
Brendanâs voice was calm but indisputable.
Mrs. Engel heaved a sigh but did not have the courage to comment further. âPlease take care of yourself, Mr. Brighthall. I shall go to my room.â
âHmm.â
The next day, Deirdre woke up late. There was no telling if she was sleeping more because of the pregnancy.
When she headed downstairs with a jacket covering herself, Brendan was just leaving the house and appeared to be in a rush.
Deirdre pretended to be unbothered. Mrs. Engel could not refrain from saying when she was serving breakfast, âMr. Brighthall caught a cold, and it seems like a rather bad one. He was constantly coughing during breakfast earlier, and that is why he didnât greet you when he noticed you were coming downstairs. I figure that he is worried that he might infect you.â
As soon as those words were spoken, Deirdre was stunned for a moment. She asked while she had her breakfast, âWas there a drop in temperature yesterday?â
Mrs. Engel heaved a sigh. âThere wasnât a drop in temperature, but Mr. Brighthall slept in the study last night.â
âIn the study?â
âThe house is only cleaned when Iâm here, and Iâve only cleaned up one room because of my busy work schedule, and there are no guests in the house usually.â
Deirdreâs movements of eating breakfast halted to a stop. âSo, Brendan⦠slept on the sofa in the study last night?â
âYes.â Mrs. Engel felt guilty. âMr. Brighthall is so tall. Aside from the sofa being too small for him, even the blanket doesnât cover him fully. It would be strange if he didnât catch a cold. I should have cleaned up another room if I were to know. My carelessness put Mr. Brighthallâ¦â
âItâs fine, Mrs. Engel. Itâs not your fault.â Deirdre consoled her, yet her heart was overwhelmed with complicated emotions.
She could not figure out Brendanâs rationale when he did that.
Brendan had just only stepped into his office when Sam opened the door and entered the room right after him. Sam appeared to be emotional and had difficulty concealing his emotions. âSir! We have news from there!â
Brendanâs pupils constricted. âWhere? Ophelia?â
âYes!â Sam nodded in a haste and passed a document to Brendan eagerly. Brendan opened the folder and looked at the photos of a mountain in there.
