Chapter 570 Sheâs Never Gonna Forgive Me âI donât think so,â replied Deirdre. âWeâll get to the hospital on our own once heâs awake.â
âSure thing.â
Before she left, Deirdre collected all of their wet clothes and asked the staff to machinedry them. When it was done, she changed into it in the bathroom.
She came out just in time to hear a soft commotion from the couch. The man had woken up with a coughing fit.
âThereâs medicine on the table and warm water. Your dry clothes are on the bed,â she said.
Brendan gave himself a moment to reorient himself before he was finally wide awake.
âThanks.â
He changed into his clothes and took some pills. Despite how bitter they were, he swallowed them without a crease on his forehead. âYouâre coming with me to Neve today.â
Deirdre raised her head and stared into his eyes. âWhy?â
Brendan took a sip of water and met her gaze calmly. âYou want your divorce, donât you?
I need to get the documents from home. Thereâs no way Iâm always bringing my marriage license and stuff with me.â
She was a little surprised. The first thing this man thought of was to arrange fortheir divorce. Nodding, she replied, âOkay. Iâll return with you.â
He grabbed his car keys. âGood. Letâs go now.â
âNo, wait.â A thought sprung into her mind. âDeclan King! He called you while you were still out. Said he has something important he needs to discuss with you.â
The mere mention of Declanâs call summoned a veil of alarm over Brendanâs mien. He scanned her face carefully, but he spotted no sign of suspicion or any emotions that could spell trouble. He feigned annoyance and snarled, âWhat does he want?â
His impatience made Deirdre clench her fists. âI donât know. I didnât ask for details. But I know it was something urgent, so you should call him back.â
Brendan shot her one last glance, took his phone, and called Declan. He stepped out of the room completely.
Declan answered him soon enough, but his voice could not disguise his grogginess or fatigue. âHello?â
âItâs me.â
Brendanâs voice mollified Declanâs tension. Now fully up, he pulled his blanket cover away from him and got out of his bed. As he perused the garden outside his window below, he asked, âWhatâs going on? Why are you seeing Miss McKinnon as Brendan Brighthall?â
Brendan pressed his lips together. âItâs⦠complicated.â
Declan found his answer hilarious. âArenât you two a fated match! You two even have the same kind of answer.â
âThatâs not the point! She answered your call. Did she realize something was amiss?â
âWhat do you think, genius? Of course she noticed! She even began interrogating me!
Good thing I noticed something fishy was going on from the first call alone, so I managed to set something up for another lie.
Things would have gone out of hand if I didnât.â
âIâm sorry.â Brendan held his heavy forehead and gave a deep sigh. âThanks for lying for me.â
âLying isnât the hard part, Bren,â Declan said wearily. âWhat I donât understand is why you are seeing her as Brendan after deciding to start all over again. Do you know how risky this whole thing is? Nobody can act as two different men at the same time! Does it ever occur to you that something grave might happen?â
âIâ¦â Brendan laughed self-deprecatingly. âSure. Laugh at me. Call me stupid. But I⦠I want to use this one last chance to stay with Dee as Brendan. One last time.â
Declan sank into silence. Then, finally, he sighed. âYou havenât let go yet.â
Brendan knew what he meant. His eyes became glassy for a moment until he snapped back to his senses. âBut I also know, without a doubt, that sheâs never gonna forgive me.
She can never forgive a haughty, cold- hearted man.â
