Chapter 524 Her Torment Was On Your Orders Deirdre had become sure of herself, confident, regal, and imposing, like, well⦠that manâ¦
Maeveâs shock gradually transitioned into feeling sorry for her. âAlright. Iâll do it. Iâll testify against McKin ney.â
âThank you.â Deirdre nodded politely at her and left her seat. The police officer greeted her and entered the room after her.
Kyran covered her with his coat and praised her. âYou were excellent.â
âReally?â Deirdre forced herself to smile through her fatigue. âI probably looked stoic and purely rational in there, but I was barely controlling my
sadness and anger. I guess Iâm just not mature enough.â
âNo, youâre wrong. Youâre very mature. What you felt stemmed from your disappointment against her. T hatâs why you felt sad and angry.â
Deirdre flashed him a pained smile. She cleared her throat and hoped all her emotions went down into
her gut like a heavy load. âReason tells me itâs only natural for a mother to do what she did. She was try ing to save her daughter, her own flesh and blood. To her, the decision was easy. The life of someone s he didnât know against the life of her own daughter. There was no cause for hesitance.
âBut I couldnât help but feel, you know? Who did she see me as? We lived together for a while, right? Di d my life mean so little to her? I guess⦠In the end, the only thing she shared with her was the voice. She sounded like her, but sheâs not her.â
Deirdre forced herself not to cry even as her eyes were red. She was not Opheliaâ
she never was her mother. Never was the woman who would forgo her own meal if it meant she could buy a little lollipop to brighten Deirdreâs day.
âDeirdreâ¦â Kyran gritted through his trembling heart and threw his arms around her. He closed his eye s as his expression twisted into a regretful grimace. It took him a long time before he could finally calm himself into assuming his calm voice. âYou still have me.â
Deirdre squeezed her arms, drawing him into herself with all her might. âI know.â Her voice sounded muffled as it escaped.
âYou have no idea how glad I am that youâre around. Anyone else in the world could bring me pain⦠ex cept for you. You never disappoint.â
Kyranâs hand froze in midâstroking her back.
âMmâhmm.â
Maeve told the interrogating officer everything. Deirdre listened to about half of her testimonial and decided she had ha d enough. The two left and visited a supermarket close to their residence. 1 After buying their ingredients, she asked, âHey, Kyran, should we call Mr. King and ask when he is comi ng back? We can have dinner together.â
Kyran made that call, but the other side did not answer him.
âHeâs probably busy. Heâs not even answering my call. Letâs eat on our own.â
âOkay!â
Deirdre began to prepare their dinner as soon as they returned home while Kyran made himself useful
with whatever auxiliary tasks needed to be completed. He received a call halfway and immediately frow ned.
âWhat is it?â asked Deirdre, turning back to him.
Vument was ch Your Finders Kyran hung up. âNothing big. Declan had a few drinks, and now heâs too tipsy to drive. He wants me to g âHe drank?â asked Deirdre, surprised. âWell, you better rescue him now. Come back soon, okay?â
Kyran kissed her hair. âTake care of yourself. If you canât find something, just wait for me. I wonât be long âOkay!â
Kyran took his coat, closed the door, and strode outside. Declanâs car was parked near the entrance, wit cigarette was lodged between his fingers.
As soon as Kyran appeared, he handed him a file. âHere. Your report.â
As Kyran rummaged through the pages, Declan spoke. âSomeone ordered Deirdre to be maltreated and when he said it was.â
