Shane froze as the monstrous Descendant stepped out from around a house. The giant bear was bigger than Raiâs fox form, towering over his small human body.
âRailen,â the bear grumbled. His voice shook the air with power.
âReginald,â Rai greeted in return.
âWhy are you in your human form?â
Rai stepped closer to Shane.
âI see,â Reginald said. âWhat happened that you willingly gave up your essence?â
Rai stepped in front of him. Shane stayed frozen as Rai protected him.
âI needed to give up my essence. I was dying, and this was the only way,â Rai explained.
Reginald nodded. âInteresting. And this scrawny one is your human?â
âYes,â Rai said proudly.
Raising his brow, Shane stepped forward. He wanted to get back, and this conversation was taking too long.
âReginald, my old friend!â Shane called out. âHow have you been?â
âWe donât know each other,â Reginald growled.
âNonsense!â Shane clapped his hands. âWe went to that party together on New Yearâs Eve two years ago. You got so drunk I had to carry you home.â
âWhat are you doing?â Rai hissed.
âParty?â Reginald asked.
âYeah, you were a riot,â Shane said with a laugh. âOne too many beers. I didnât think a man of your size was such a lightweight.â
The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.
âWhatâs going on?â Reginald asked.
Shane smiled. âYou were just telling us about your lady friend that you met at the party. She was a real looker as well.â
âWhat party?â
Shane could hear Rai smack her forehead.
âThe party at Gilbertsonâs house!â Shane claimed. âYou were the prime attraction. I was honestly jealous at how many ladies wanted to hug you. Youâre a giant teddy bear after all.â
âIâm not a teddy bear,â Reginald groused.
âOf course, you are,â Shane said. âI wouldnât want to cast doubt on all those ladies you slept with.â
âI didnât sleep with any humans!â Reginald took a step forward.
âAre you sure?â Shane asked while rubbing his chin. âThen again, we were going shot for shot, and everything became a blur pretty quickly.â
âShane!â Rai hissed.
âYes, my love?â Shane asked. âYou missed a great party that night. Though, I would never cheat on you. Reginald kept me in line.â
Groaning, Rai took the bag off his back and started walking away. âIdiot,â she muttered.
Shane ignored her. âSo tell me, Reginald. When are we hitting up the town again?â
âWeâre in a town!â Reginald grumbled.
âPshh! This empty place wonât host a party. You should come over some time. Iâm making a hearty stew for dinner. Do you like stew? If I remember correctly, you like stew.â
âI donât eat stew,â Reginald rumbled. With his next step, the rough asphalt rose in the air.
Shane gasped. âThatâs amazing!â Tilting his head at the display, he put on his best smile. âI remember you showing that trick off at the last dinner we had together. You were dressed in the suede tuxedo. It really highlighted your brown hair.â
The stones fell to the ground, and Reginald groaned. âHow the hell did Railen end up with a man like you?â
âIâm charming, witty, and amazingly handsome!â
âYou said stew?â Reginald asked.
âYup! Iâll have to gather a few herbs on the way home, but Iâll make enough for a man of your stature.â
Reginald walked away. âI know where you live. Iâll see you tonight.â
âSounds good, buddy!â
Smiling to himself, Shane jogged after Rai, who was already past the tree line.
Once he caught up to her, he couldnât bring himself to stop smiling. âThat went well.â
Rai glared at him. âYouâre an idiot!â
âYou married this idiot,â he said with a smirk.
âWhen we get back, Iâll go hunting. You better drop everything off and pick up water from the river. Weâll be busy all day hunting down herbs.â
âReginald is a good guy. I donât know why you didnât want to get caught by him.â
Rai growled. âLike me, he hates humans. He has his reasons, and they are not for me to share.â
âSounds good!â Shane chirped.
Shane watched Rai roll her eyes before picking up her pace. They had a long day ahead of them.
