She held her fury down and coldly hissed, âJust find her, and donât ask questions.â
Oh, sheâs mad. Ashton quickly explained, âI donât mean to pry. Iâm just worried if Leo finds out that this isnât the one whoââ
âShe is the donor as long as you say she is!â Elyse growled like a tigress.
And Ashton was shocked.
A moment later, Elyse realized she had just lost her composure. Well, this is awkward. I know I see him as less than a bug, but at least he helped me. I shouldnât have yelled at him. That was a bit unreasonable. And I have to calm him down, so heâll keep supporting me. Softly, she apologized, âSorry. Tension has been running high, so I lost control of my temper. I didnât mean it.â She once again put on a sad look and gave him a puppy pout, And Ashton fell for her act again. âI canât believe Leo wouldnât pay more attention to you. Itâs like he doesnât even care about your feelings. Unbelievable. He chose you. He should be treasuring you like youâre the most precious thing in life.â Elyse was the most perfect woman in the world, at least for Ashton. He thought she deserved nothing but the best.
Elyse sneered in silence. Yeah, right. Like you care about love. Youâre a cheating jerk. Iâve seen you change girlfriends at least four times a month. As if you know how to treasure a woman. But she kept that to herself.
She still needed him, after all. So instead of mocking him, she held his hand. âI canât count on my family for anything. Leo is all I have left. I have to go through a lot just to get back with him, and I donât want anything to get between us. I donât mind him searching for the donor, but Iâm worried she might have ideas about him. If she wanted me to leave him, itâd be a disaster for me. And Leo might find her request hard to fulfill. You have to keep it a secret, for both him and me. Insist that Elaine was the donor.â
She went back not long after she left the night before, worried that Toby might put in a bad word with Leo. But by chance, she found out Leo was still searching for the donor. He didnât think much about Tobyâs elaboration, but she, on the other hand, felt a chill tun down her spine. And the only thought that went through her mind was, I canât let Leo keep searching for that woman no matter what. She needed someone to impersonate the donor. Someone dead. And so, she asked Ashton to help her.
That sounds serious. Ashton quickly said, âI wonât say a word. Donât worry.â
âThank you. For everything youâve done for Leo and me.â Mostly me. The only one who gained something out of this was her, and yet she acted like it was good for her and Leo.
Ashton sighed. âLeoâs so lucky he has you.â
And then someone behind them coughed.
Elyse turned around only to be met with Leoâs dark gaze. She quickly let go of Ashtonâs hand and approached Leo. âOh, back so soon? I thought you would be up there for a while.â She only had eyes for Leo, her concern Leo shook his head. âI want to see Elaineâs mother.â
âWeâll go right away.â Elyse nodded and pointed at a shack not too far from them. âThatâs their house.â
Ashton didnât follow them. He stayed back to get some sleep. Only Elyse and Leo went to the shack.
Halfway through, Leo asked, âWhyâd you suddenly help with the search?â
She froze up and looked at Leo. He seemed calm as if he was just asking that question out of curiosity.
But she knew better. Someone like Leo would never ask any question simply out of curiosity, Alarm bells rang in her head, but Elyse remained calm. She pursed her lips and covered her mouth, then she looked at the ground. âI hated myself for lying to you last time, and I wanted to do something to make it up to you. Iâve been asking Ashton and others to search for Elaine no matter what. Fortunately, Ashton knows a lot about your case, and he eventually found Elaine.â She went ahead and held his hand before she swung it. âI owe you and Elaine an apology. If I hadnât been so selfish, you wouldâve known about her a long time ago. Sheâs no longer with us, but I wish to fund her sisterâs education until she graduates college. Itâs what I can do for her.â
Leo seemed to believe her, and he held her hand. âTaking care of her family is my job, not yours.â
âWeâll be a family soon. You donât have to be formal,â she said cheekily.
But Leo froze. For some reason, when he thought of the woman whom he would raise a family with, he could only see Amelie in his mind. He quickly shook his head and forgot about her. âLetâs go.â
Elaineâs mother happily welcomed them. Leo asked for Elaineâs medical records, and the lady quickly laid out the files before him, including the one that recorded the donation of her cornea.
âThis is the consultation result she came back with when she decided to donate her cornea. And this is her train ticket to Quinn Town. And this is the form she filled out. The medical staff refused her application for a living donation. And this is her diary.â
Leo skimmed through everything.
A smile curled Elyseâs lips, and she nodded at Elaineâs mother.
Before they left, Leo gave Elaineâs mother a check worth seven hundred and fifty grand, much to the ladyâs delight. And then she saw the couple off.
Good. He believes the story now. Elyse heaved a sigh of relief. Now I donât have to worry about that woman anymore. Sheâs not going to be a threat to my relationship now.
Leo took her back to her home. She got out of the car beautifully and winked at him. âYouâve been driving for hours. Wanna crash at my place for the night?â
âNo. I have something else to settle.â And Leo turned around.
And she smiled. But so what? Elaineâs dead, and now heâs forever caught in the curse of his old flame-
Big Eyes. Heâll be mine eventually.
Excellent Homes. The place where Toby lived. He came downstairs languidly, wearing his pajamas.
There were no servants around. He was used to living by himself, and he could do whatever he wanted. And he was about to get himself a glass of water. But the moment he touched his glass, he saw someone on his couch, and he gasped.
