Chapter 0036
Serenaâs POV
âOh, shut up.â I snap at Stevie, pleading for her to quit the teasing.â Calvin and I are just friends.â
Thinking about Calvin and me as more than friends sends a flurry of butterflies through my stomach. Yet, heâs told me he cares in a way that feels more like an uncle. I have to shake off these feelings before I fall too deeply.
âCome on, you obviously like him,â Stevie says. âWhy not show it? Is it because heâs Billâs family?â
âActually, Billâs family hates me. They believe I only married Bill
because heâs a billionaire,â I admit. Even thinking about it leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
âWhat a bunch of pricks,â Stevie mutters, her once jolly expression darkening into a scowl. âWerenât you and Bill together for three years? How did you tolerate their awful attitudes? And why are you still on friendly terms with any of them?â
Iâm touched by how Stevieâs always been the one to watch out for us, ever since college. Itâs just who she is always defending her friends. Now, realizing I havenât talked to her in three years makes me feel really bad.
âCalvinâs different,â I defend him. âHeâs always there when I need support. And he never looked down on me.â
Stevie stares at me harder, looking kind of weird. âYou know what Iâm going to say?â
Confused, I raise my eyebrows. âWhat?â
Jumping up, she strikes a pose like sheâs back in her cheerleading days,

My face heats up. Stevie really knows how to go over the top Haha. Very mature, Stevie,â I reply, my voice flat
She nudges my arm, grinning. âHey! You know me. Iâm just happy for you, finally finding a good man.â
Calvin pulls up in front of my apartment two hours later. As he steps out of the car, heâs dressed in a onisp, white buttonâdown shirt that hugs his frame, paired with dark jeans that accentuate his lean build.
Stevie shifts beside me and whispers, âWow, Calvin really is handsomeâ
Stevie and Calvin exchange greetings Calvin, with a warm smile, says, â After you,â gesturing for us to enter first.
âIâve been swamped lately,â Calvin mentions, holding the door open for us âLuckily, a client canceled, so Iâve got time to show you around the shop I told you about now â
âI really appreciate your help, Calvin. Thank you,â I respond. Is it far from here?â
Calvin shakes his head, a reassuring smile on his face. âNah, just a 20- minute drive to Van Nuys Shall we?â
On our way to Van Nuys, Iâm filled with a mix of excitement and nerves. It feels unreal that my dream of starting a business is so close to becoming true. Sitting next to Calvin, watching the streets zip by, my heart races with the thought of finally seeing the place.
When we arrived, we were greeted by a man with neatly trimmed gray hair and a full beard, wearing a relaxed ensemble of a soft, wornâin blue shirt paired with dark khaki pants and comfortableâlooking leather
shoes.
Calvin, with a friendly nod towards the man, says, âThis is Peter, a good

friend of mine who owns the mall.â He then turns to us, âPeter, meet Stevie and Serena. Theyâre business partners interested in renting at space here for their jewelry business)
Peter greets us with a warm smile, extending his hand for a firm handshake. âWelcome! Itâs a pleasure to meet both of you,â he says.
âNice to meet you, Peter. Weâre excited about the chance to start our business here,â I say with a smile.
âThatâs awesome!â Peter exclaims. âCome on in, and Iâll give you a tour.â
As we step inside, itâs immediately apparent that the mall is brand new. The pristine floors shine under the bright, welcoming lights, and the wide, open spaces are filled with an air of potential.
The mall isnât crowded, but the few shoppers here move around leisurely, looking wealthy. The shops, though few, look upscale and fancy, clearly aiming for highâend customers. Calvin had said this mall was close to a rich area, and it shows in both the place and the people.
âThis is a beautiful mall, Peter. Youâve done an incredible job with it,â I compliment.
Peter beams with pride. âThank you, Serena. Weâve put a lot of work into it, hoping to create something special. Iâm glad you like it.â
âSo, here we are,â Peter announces, gesturing towards the store.
Peter stops us in front of a small, empty store. Itâs not as big as the one we saw in Melrose, but it has a luxurious feel. The storefront has clean lines and big windows that let in lots of light, making everything inside look elegant.
I catch Stevieâs eye and can immediately tell sheâs impressed, which says a lot. Given her keen eye for aesthetics in her photography work, itâs not often something that meets her high standards so easily.

âWow, it looks great,â I say, feeling a bit nervous. âHow much is the rent. for this space each month?â
I really hope itâs something we can afford. We want to start small, selling just a few pieces of jewelry, and then grow from there. The dream is big, but our budget⦠not so much.
Peter gives a reassuring smile, likely noticing my nervousness about the price. âYou know what? I want to offer you a great discount. How does $2000 per month sound?â
My jaw practically hits the floor. Although itâs still a significant amount, itâs much lower compared to other commercial spaces Iâve looked at online. âAre you sure, Peter? This is such a nice space.â
âIâm sure,â Peter confirms. âYou can thank my very good friend here for vouching for you.â He nods towards Calvin. I turn to Calvin with a grateful smile and mouth âThank you.â
âDo we have a deal then?â Peter asks.
Stevie and I look at each other, and I can tell sheâs thinking the same thing I am.
âYes,â I say, feeling a surge of excitement. âWeâll take it.â
âGreat. Iâll go grab the paperwork so we can get things started,â Peter says, then heads off to prepare everything.
âWhat do you guys think of your new place?â Calvin asks, looking between us.
âWe love it,â I reply, unable to hide my excitement. Stevie and I share a giggle. âThanks for finding this for us, Calvin. We couldnât have started the business without your help.â
âI just know a lot of people,â Calvin says with a modest shrug. âBut remember, your business is a result of your hard work.â

Calvin falls silent for a moment, then his eyes light up as he remembers something. âOh! I forgot to mention, thereâs a small studio in the back you can rent for overnight stays. I know driving back and forth to Van Nuys might get tiring for you.â
âThank goodness,â Stevie exclaims. âI was worried Serena would be running around too much. Itâs not really good for her, especially with the baby on the way.â
I quickly tap Stevieâs arm and make a âshhâ gesture, but I can tell itâs already too late.
