Chapter 0024
I furrow my brows in confusion. âWhat are you talking about? Iâm fine,â I
insist.
But Mom and Aunt Claire exchange a knowing glance. Mom then turns back to me, her expression filled with worry. âBill, you donât look so good,â she says gently.
I try to sound convincing, âTrust me, Iâm doing better than ever.â But deep down, I know they can see right through me.
Before they arrived, I had glanced at myself in the mirror and even I was taken aback. My reflection showed dark circles under my eyes, standing out against my pale complexion. My lips were losing their color, and I hadnât shaved in days. The truth is, ever since I found out the divorce was final, sleep has been a stranger to me.
Aunt Claireâs voice is filled with sympathy, âNo need to deny it, Bill. We understand your exâwife cheated on you. Itâs only natural youâd be stressed out like this.â
I bite down hard on my teeth, trying to keep my emotions in check at Aunt Claireâs words. Why are my marital problems their business
anyway?
Aunt Claireâs suggestion catches me off guard. âI heard Doris is still single. Why donât you get to know her better?â
Mom chimes in, adding to the unexpected proposal. âYes. I think sheâs been holding out for you, Bill. Itâs about time you dated a mature, smart
woman.
âLook, itâs not what it looks like. Doris and I are just friends,â I hastily explain. âWhy donât we just talk about the FeynmanâWebster merger, Mom? Iâm guessing itâs gonna happen soon.â

For the next few days, I bury myself in work. I attend more meetings than ever and prepare proposals for some of the biggest names in the financial industry. Staying busy is my way of distracting myself from thinking about Serena.
One night, Sarah shares some surprising news with me over the phone.â You wonât believe who I spotted at the Soleil et Lune Bistro last night.â
I fall silent, perplexed. I canât imagine why she thinks Iâd be interested in which celebrity she meet at that restaurant. âAnyone I know?â I ask, adding a touch of sarcasm.
âOh, you know her,â Sarah says, a bit more seriously. âYour exâwife, Serena, is here with some older guy.â
Upon hearing about my exâwife having dinner with another man, a knot twists in my stomach. I pause briefly before responding.
âWell, who was she with?â I ask.
âI didnât see him clearly,â Sarah says. âAll I could make out was his back, but it was definitely Serena, and she seemed to be having a good time, laughing quite a bit.â
Serena rarely laughed during our marriage. Itâs evident sheâs trying to charm another wealthy man, maybe even her sugar daddy.
I lean back and let out a heavy sigh, feeling my shoulders tense up. Yeah, I couldnât care less about her. Weâre divorced anyway,â I say, but my emphasis on the word âdivorceâ makes it sound insincere.
âWow, youâre not really taking it well, boss,â Sarah comments. âLooks like somebodyâs jealous.â
Chapter 0024
I roll my eyes and clench my jaw, trying to keep cool. âJealous? Thatâs ridiculous. And you donât need to update me on Serenaâs every move, okay?â
âOkay, okay,â she replies, sounding a bit defensive. âJust thought you should know. Iâm leaving now. They arrived just a bit ago.â
How could Sarah thinks Iâm jealous when Iâm not? I just need to get to the bottom of this. I wonât stand by and let her be with someone else. If she canât be happy with me, then she wonât be happy with anyone else either.
