Dadâs eyes light up with the question. âWell, your momâs really turned the garden into something special, and her cooking, as you know, is better than ever,â he says with a proud glance at Mom.
âAnd believe it or not,â Mom chimes in with a chuckle, âyour dadâs been joining me in aerobics classes every week. Keeps us young.â
Dad nods, adding, âAnd Iâve picked up a few consultant gigs here and there, just to keep busy. But weâre taking it easy, enjoying retirement.â
âHow about you, dear? What have you been doing?â Mom asks.
âOh,
you know⦠I just moved back to my old apartment,â I manage to say, trying to sound nonchalant.
Mom and Dad share a knowing look, a silent conversation passing. between them. Dad sighs deeply. âSerena, did something happen. between you and your husband?â he asks, his voice laced with worry.

I muster a small smile. âItâs okay. I think this is for the best.â
Dadâs utensils clatter onto his plate. âOkay, what did that son of a bitch. do? You werenât able to call us for three years, and this is the news you bring us?â
âDad, calm down,â I urge, reaching across the table to gently touch his hand. âIâm okay now, really. Thereâs no need for anger.â
âBut you had us worried, honey,â he confesses.
âI know, and Iâm really sorry,â I say. âBut I promise, he never hurt me or anything⦠We just came to see how different we are from each other.â

My dad has always been the protective type, with a strict sense of justice. Knowing him, heâd be furious if he thought Bill had abandoned us, especially now. But revealing my pregnancy might lead him to that conclusion.
âMom, Dad,â I start, eager to steer the conversation to safer waters. âI could really use your help with something.â
Mom looks intrigued. âWhat is it, dear?â
âYou know how I used to spend hours making jewelry as a kid? Iâve been thinking⦠why not turn that passion into something real? I want to start my own handcrafted jewelry business.â
Momâs eyes light up at the idea. âThatâs wonderful!â she exclaims. âI remember buying you all those beads, and how youâd sit for hours making those beautiful friendship bracelets for your school friends.â
Dad, with a cautious tone, asks, âSo, how could we help you with that?â
âI was hoping you might lend me some money to get started,â I say, a bit unsure. âI didnât ask for any financial settlement from the divorce, so Iâm short on funds.â
âI donât know, honey. Thereâs too much competition in the jewelry business,â Dad says. âDonât get your hopes too high.â
My dadâs great at business, but he hit a rough patch when his partner took off with the companyâs money, leaving Dad to deal with the mess. He couldâve been very successful if that hadnât happened. I really value. his advice on business matters.
âIâm ready for any questions you might have,â I tell Dad, handing him a folder. âThis has all my research and how I plan to make the business profitable.â
âThis is quite thorough, Serena,â he finally says. âYouâve really thought

âPlease, Dad. Give me a chance to prove I can do this. I wonât let you down,â I plead.
Dad sets the folder aside. âFine,â he concedes, his voice softened by affection. âYour mom and I will help you with your business. Iâd do anything for you, honey.â
âThanks, Mom and Dad,â I express. âI knew I could count on you.â
Dadâs expression hardens. âBut I wouldnât forgive your exâhusband,â he states firmly. âI swear, if I ever see that motherfucker again, heâs gonna get it.â
I hasten to soothe him, âRelax, Dad. Youâre never gonna see him again.â
Ironically, just as those words leave my lips, my phone breaks the brief calm with its insistent ring. I glance at the screen, and a jolt of surprise runs through me. Itâs Bill calling.
