Chapter 0019
Serenaâs POV
I never realized just how much Iâd drifted from my old life after marrying Bill, until bumping into Stevie between the cereal and coffee at the grocery store.
Iâm halfway down the coffee aisle when I spot her. Stevie, looking just like she did back in our college days, is checking her phone and laughing.
I hesitate for a second, then decide to approach her. âStevie?â I call out. âItâs been a while.â
Stevie turns, surprised to see me. Weâre both quiet for a second but then she says, âSerena! I canât believe itâs you.â
Stevie hugs me, sounding really happy to see me. It makes me wonder, though. âArenât you mad?â I blurt out, unable to hide my confusion. We havenât talked since I married Bill.
Stevie shakes her head, smiling slightly. âNah, I get it. Guys like that can. be tough,â she says, her tone light but sincere. âYou know, with my stepdad and all. But man, I really missed you. A text or a call wouldâve meant a lot.â
I feel a mix of happy and guilty when Stevie says that. âIâve missed your too,â I say quietly. âIâm sorry I didnât reach out. Life just⦠got in the way.â
Stevie glances around the store before turning back to me. âSo, what are you up to after this?â
I shrug, placing a box of cereal in my cart. âNothing much, really. Why?â
She brightens up a bit. âThereâs this cozy cafe just around the corner. How about we catch up over coffee?â
Chapter 19
As we step into the cafe, the aroma of freshly ground coffee beans and the soft hum of a jazz playlist greets us. We find a small table near the window, the afternoon light casting patterns through the hanging plants.
âSo, what are you doing in this part of town?â she asks.
I take a moment, feeling the weight of my words before they even leave. my lips. âActually, Iâve moved back to my old apartment,â I finally say. â Bill and I⦠we just got divorced.â
Stevieâs face lights up, her words quick and sharp. âWell, itâs about. damn time.â I know sheâs never been a fan of Bill, mainly because of his short fuse, something she never shied away from pointing out.
Trying to lighten the mood, I quickly shift gears. âEnough about me,â I say, offering a small, hopeful smile. âWhatâs been going on with you?â
Stevie leans back, her face lighting up. âOh, itâs been crazy busy, but in a good way,â she says. âIâve had a couple of shows and some magazine work. Itâs pretty awesome to see things finally coming together, you know?â
âIâm really happy for you, Stevie!â I canât help but smile, truly thrilled for her. âI heard about your exhibits. Everyoneâs saying they were amazing.â
As Stevie talks about her photography, trying to sound like itâs no big. deal, I canât help but feel proud of her. Sheâs doing amazing work, even
if she wonât admit it.
I havenât felt this happy in a long time. Itâs like being with Bill and living his way of life drained all the joy from me.
âWell, at least one of us is following her dreams,â I say with a smile.
Stevie furrows her brow, puzzled. âWhat do you mean?â she probes

gently. âI thought you had a plan in place, especially after divorcing your ex.â
âIâm still figuring it out,â I admit. Going back to my old job isnât an option. â not after everything thatâs happened with Bill.
The barista calls our name, snapping me out of my daze. âWait a
moment,â Stevie says and gets up to get our order.
Stevie places our order on the table. It consists of two steaming cups of coffee, a chocolate muffin, and a freshly baked croissant. âIâm just thinking⦠What if I help you figure this out?â she asks.
I smile at her. âThat would be awesome. I really appreciate it, Stevie.â
She responds, âNo problem at all. Thatâs what friends are for, right? Have you considered getting a job similar to your old one?â
Iâm worried about going back to work in a corporate setting, especially with a baby on the way. âWell, Iâve been feeling the need for change and a fresh start, actually,â I reply.
âI get that,â Stevie says. âHmmâ¦Letâs see. How about starting your own business? You could be your own boss that way, you know.â
My eyes light up with interest as I consider the idea. âI like the idea,â I say. âBut there are lot of things to consider like capital. Right now, I donât have any.â
âYouâre divorced, right?â Stevie asks. âHow about using part of the settlement for your business?â
I look down and admit, âI didnât ask Bill for any compensation. I didnât want him and his family to think I was after their money.â
We both fall into silence for a moment. Stevie gives me a sympathetic Jook and decides not to push the matter any further.
She then suggests, âOkay, never mind. How about asking your folks for

financial help?â
âWell, my parents and I arenât exactly on speaking terms, Iâm not sure they want to see me,â I say, sighing. I slump in my chair, and I just feel really lost. âI donât know what to do with my life anymore,â I confess.
âHey, calm down. Theyâre your parents. How can they donât want to see you? Besides, youâre a smart woman,â Stevie reassures. âRemember this?â she says, pointing to the bracelet sheâs wearing.
The bracelet catches my eye, and I fondly remember crafting it back in college. Itâs adorned with delicate silver links, and its centerpiece glimmers with a sparkling sapphire, which happens to be Stevieâs birthstone.
I recall how Stevie was anxious about our final exams, and I suggested she wear this bracelet for good luck. Surprisingly, it seemed to work like a charm as she aced nearly all of her exams.
âOh, you still have this? Wow, Iâm touched,â I say, feeling genuinely moved.
âYeah,â Stevie replies with a smile. âI guess my careerâs been taking off because of it.â
I shake my head and say, âNonsense. Youâre a great photographer.â
âWell, one thing Iâve always admired about you is your keen eye for beauty and design,â Stevie says with a warm smile. âOh! What do you think about the idea of starting your own handcrafted jewelry business?â
My eyes widen with excitement, and anticipation tingles down my spine. Iâve never felt this eager to get started on something in my life.â Stevie, youâre a genius! Thank you so much.â
âI know,â Stevie says with a cheeky grin. âSo, are you going to ask your parents for help now?â

âYou alright, Serena?â Stevie asks, furrowing her brows. âWhatâs happening?â
âItâs alright. This is normal,â I say, trying to reassure her. âI just need to go to the bathroom.â
âHow is this normal?â Stevie says, but then she drops the croissant sheâs eating, and her eyes widen in shock.
âOh my God, Serena! When were you planning to tell me that youâre pregnant?â Stevie exclaims in surprise.
