Chapter 0012
âCalvin, Billâs in the hospital. He needs surgery. Iâve signed the papers, but you should be here,â I explain hastily.
âOh my God, is he okay?â Calvin asks.
âI donât know,â I reply, my voice shaking. âTheyâre taking him to surgery. Please hurry.â
âHey, calm down, Iâm on my way,â Calvin reassures me through the phone, his voice steady. âJust hang in there, Iâll be there as fast as I can.â
Hearing frantic footsteps, I first assume itâs Calvin. However, my initial relief shifts to concern when I see Elena, my exâmotherâinâlaw, approaching with a look of deep worry on her face. Following closely is Billâs aunt, Claire, whose expression is more angry than worried.
With tears in her eyes, Elena grabs my arm tightly. âWhat have your done to my son?â she demands.
Feeling the tight grip of Elenaâs hand on my arm, I respond, âElena, I didnât do anything. Bill got hurt trying to protect me. Iâm worried about him too.â
âI just know itâs all your fault. Like always, you fail as a wife,â she says, trying to hurt me with her words.
I break free from Elenaâs grip and say, âBut Iâm not his wife anymore. âI swiftly retrieve the signed divorce papers and hand them to her. As she reads them, her brows furrow in surprise. âYou have no right to call me a failure,â I emphasize, standing up for myself.
âThe nerve of you!â Claire exclaims angrily. âHow dare you bring up

divorce when Billâs fighting for his fe? Youâre just after his money.â
âBullshit!â I let out a curse, not holding back. âThis is your problem, Claire. Youâre always poking your nose into other peopleâs business,â I say firmly.
âJust so you know, I didnât ask for a single penny from Bill,â I emphasize.
âI donât believe a word you just said,â Claire says sharply. âWe all know what you really are, Serena⦠A socialâclimbing bitch!â
I let out a mocking laugh. âReally Claire?â I say with a smirk. âAnd what about you? Well, maybe if you werenât such a nagging bitch, your husband wouldnât cheat on you so much!â
Claire and Elena look at me as if they have seen a ghost. Their eyes. widen in shock as I defend myself, âThatâs right! I know all about the dirty little secrets in your family.â
âAre you blackmailing us?â Claire demands. âHow dare you!â
Claire raises her hand swiftly, ready to deliver a slap. I tense up and close my eyes, bracing myself for the impact.
Out of nowhere, I hear Calvinâs voice. âEnough of this!â he yells. I open my eyes to find him blocking Claireâs hand, preventing her from slapping me. âYou two are acting like kids. Letâs focus on Bill, please, â he urges.
A heavy silence follows. âIs it true?â Calvin finally asks, his voice softer. âAre you and Bill divorced?â
In response, I reach for the papers and hand them to Calvin, allowing him to examine the divorce documents for himself.
Calvin quickly scans through the papers, then sighs, saying, âYeah, itâs true. Theyâre divorced. Can we please stop giving Serena a hard time now?â
Elena remains silent, looking down contemplation. However,
Claire le persistent. âI donât know how that woman could possibly brainwash you too, Calvin,â she insists.
Calvinâs patience wears thin, and he raises his voice. âStop it, Claire!â he yells. âSerena didnât ask for a settlement either, Quit accusing her of using Bill.â
Claire falls silent and shifts her attention to consoling the crying Elena, choosing to let go of the argument for the moment.
âThanks for standing up for me,â I express my gratitude to Calvin for defending me against his halfâsisters.
He reassures me with a warm smile, saying, âSerena, itâs because you did nothing wrong. I appreciate you taking Bill to the hospital so quickly.â
I shrug. âAnyone could have done what I did.â
As we talk, I notice the signal light of the operating room going out. I canât help but feel that Bill is going to be alright. My heart lifts with hope.
