Chapter 0118
Serenaâs POV
Stevie and I close up the shop in the mall, pulling down the security gate. At five months pregnant, I move more slowly, often resting a hand on my growing belly.
Stevie insists on walking me home. We step into the cool evening air and make our way to my
apartment.
As we reach my building, I turn to Stevie and say, âThanks for walking me home, Stevie. I know youâre probably so tired from the photoshoot today.â
Stevie waves her hand dismissively. âNah, itâs nothing,â she says with a smile. âItâs the least I can do since youâre already carrying a whole watermelon around.â
We both laugh, the sound echoing softly in the evening air. Stevie then crouches down and talks to the baby inside. âHey champ, your mom and I canât wait to meet you!â she says warmly.
I smile down at her. âHeâs kicking right now. I think he can hear you,â I say, feeling a warm flutter in my belly.
Stevie grins and stands back up. âI bet my godchild and I will get along really well.â
As we approach the front door, I notice a grocery bag sitting on the doorstep.
âErr, Serena?â Stevie says as she picks it up. âDid you ask someone to buy you groceries?â
âUhm, no,â I reply, puzzled. âI wonder who would leave this.â
âHuh, thatâs weird.â Stevie checks it out and takes out a jar of pickles. âOh, itâs just pickles, sardines
and Nutella.â
My eyes widen. Iâve been craving these things the past few weeks. And thereâs only one person who
knows about it.
âOoh! Found a note,â she says and gives it to me. âWhat does it say?â
The handwriting is distinct, with bold, looping letters and a slight slant to the right. Itâs immediately recognizable: Billâs handwriting.
you, Iâd handle it,â I read aloud. âThereâs also a little smiley at the end.â I point to the smiley and
âTold
show it to her.
Stevie takes the note and examines it. âIt looks weirdâ she remarks. She thinks for a moment, then her eyes widen in surprise.
âMaybe itâs a trap from Max and Eden. Hold on. Iâll just throw it out. Better be safe than sorry,â she adds.
Stevie grabs the grocery bag and heads towards the trash bin, ready to toss it out.
âOh no! Those are my cravings,â I say, stopping her. âI know who theyâre from.â

Stevie pauses, looking at me with curiosity. âFrom whom then?â

I hesitate, unsure how to respond. If I tell Stevie itâs from Bill, she would know something is going on between us. And Stevie wonât like it.
Before I can open my mouth, Stevie says, âCould it be,â she begins, making me nervous that sheâll figure it out, âfrom Calvin?â
I exhale softly, feeling a small weight lift off my shoulders. âMaybe,â I reply with a secretive smile. I hate lying to my best friend, but itâs probably for the best.
Stevie squeals giddily, her eyes lighting up with excitement. âI knew it! Calvinâs so sweet for doing this.â
She claps her hands together and does a little hop, her joy infectious. âYou two are so perfect together,
she gushes.
âWell, Iâm lucky to have the best people around,â I say, winking at her.
âAw, youâre the best too,â Stevie says, giving me a warm smile. âI should probably go. You need to rest
now.â
I nod, feeling the dayâs exhaustion catching up with me. âYouâre right. Thanks again, Stevie.â
âAnytime,â she replies, giving me a quick hug. âIâll see you tomorrow.â
I step into my apartment and place the bag on the kitchen counter.
I unpack the bag, setting the pickles, sardines, and Nutella on the counter. The note with the smiley face still sits in my hand, and I find myself smiling despite the dayâs chaos.
I glance at my phone, seeing a message from Bill: âHope you liked the surprise.â
I stare at the message for a moment, remembering something that has been bugging me. I pick up the phone and call Bill.
âHey,â I say when he answers.
âOh, hey,â Bill replies, his voice warm and a little surprised. âIs everything good?â
âYeah. And thanks for the surprise,â I say. âIt made me smile.â
âReally?â he asks, a hint of relief in his voice. âIâm glad to hear that.â
I pause, gathering my thoughts. âBill, can you come over here tonight? I think we need to talk.â
