âOKAY, YOUâVE ALREADYÂ admitted that your anger is one of the biggest issues in your marriage, right? So, if this marriage means as much as you say it does, then what steps can you take to better control that anger, Mr. Giles?â
Iâm only half paying attention as he spouts off all the techniques weâve been discussing during his sessions, when my phone buzzes in my lap. With a quick glance, I see that itâs Evangeline. And now itâs even harder to pay attention, but I resist the urge to check my phone and push through the last fifteen minutes of his session. He is paying for my services after all.
âMr. Giles,â I hold out my hand for his. âIâd like you to contact the guy on that card I gave you for anger management. Iâm afraid if you canât get this under controlâ¦Well, I donât need to tell you what thatâll mean, or you wouldnât be here in the first place.â
âYes, maâam. Iâm desperate. Iâll give him a call as soon as I get out of here.â
âVery good.â I nod, ready to shove him out the door. âIâll see you next week.â
When my office is finally empty, I collapse into my chair and pull up my message from Evangeline.
Hey, Gina. Do you have time to talk? I think somethingâs wrong.
Itâs Friday. Just two days since the whole period debacle and Iâve been thinking of her nonstop but didnât want to be the first to message. Somehow, Iâm scared Iâll overstep. Even if Jeff did give us his blessing. His kids are slippery territory, and I donât want to do anything to screw this up.
Iâm between clients now. Can you talk?
Yeah, I just got home. Dadâs still at work.
Reaching across my desk I buzz Lois, my receptionist.
âYes, Gina?â
âCan you hold my next client up front for a few minutes? I need to make an important call. Iâll buzz you back when Iâm ready.â
âSure thing.â
âThanks.â
After resting my desk phone back in its cradle, I dial Vangie on my cell.
âHello,â she moans, sounding like death.
âWhatâs wrong, baby?â Instantly my pulse starts racing.
It takes her a moment to stop crying enough to talk. âIt just hurts so bad. My head and myâmy stomach.â
âI know, honey. Did you try the Midol we picked up the other day?â
She whimpers. âYeah, but I canât take it again for another hour.â
âListen,â I say, now pacing my office. âPlug in that heating pad and lay down with it across your abdomen for a while. This seems a bit excessive. Iâm going to talk to your dad about taking you to a gynecologist. Just to check and make sure everythingâs okay. Sometimes they can put you on birth control, and it helps immensely.â
âOh, God. Thereâs no way I could ask him to put me on birth control. Dad would flip his shit.â
That makes me laugh, because she is absolutely right. âThatâs why Iâll talk to him. Go get some rest, and Iâll check on you after work.â
âThanks, Gigi,â she groans, ending the call.
My last two clientsâ sessions fly by, and Iâm off by five. Itâs so nice having Spence back in the office and getting out before dark. Those long nights were really wearing on me.
As soon as Iâm in my car, I text Vangie to see how sheâs feeling, getting no response. I donât want to call and bother her if sheâs sleeping, so I decide Iâll try her again later.
When I get home, I text again. And once again thereâs no response, so I call Jeffrey.
âHey, gorgeous, I was just about to call you,â he answers. His cheery tone brings a smile to my face.
âWere you?â I ask, popping a frozen dinner into the microwave.
âI miss you,â he mumbles into the phone, indicating Willow must be nearby.
âYou just saw me day before yesterday,â I tease, although I miss him so much my insides are twisted up into knots. The girls are staying home this weekend which means I wonât see him for a whole week. My plan is to spend as much time as I can with Spence and the kids to try to keep my mind off my . I really suck at this fuck buddy thing.
He chuckles. âSo?â
âHey, howâs Vangie?â I ask, changing the subject. âShe wasnât feeling well earlier, and I texted a few times to check in, but sheâs not answering.â
âI just came down from her room. Sheâs in bed with the heating pad, passed out.â
âPoor baby.â
âCome over?â he blurts out of nowhere. âSpend the nightâ¦Iâll take the couch, and you can have my bed.â
Now my heart is racing for an entirely different reason. Lines are blurring, but I donât have enough self-preservation to say no, so instead I ask, âAre you sure?â
âThe girls will love it, and then you can check on Vangie yourself,â he adds. âPerfect excuse.â
âJeffreyâ¦What are you going to do when Evangeline eventually asks about us? Sheâs not a little kid. Sheâs going to realize somethingâs going on. Women donât just drive two hours to sleep at a guy friendâs house.â
âSure, they do.â The man is completely deluded. âIâll tell her weâre just friends, and you enjoy spending time with them. They donât need to know more than that.â
Iâd be lying if I said it didnât hurt to be treated like his dirty little secret, but I knew exactly what I was getting myself into and dove in head first. I have no right to feel the way I do.
âI should say no.â With the phone resting between my chin and shoulder, I retrieve my Banquet spaghetti and meatballs from the microwave, tossing the little tray to the counter.
âWhat time can you be here?â
âSee you at seven.â
§
âGigi, you tame back!â
Jeff smiles down at me, grabbing the overnight bag from my hand so I can properly greet my little friend. Before he heads toward his bedroom with my things, he gives me a sexy wink.
âHey, baby girl.â I swoop her up into my arms like a little baby and fall into the plush, oversized armchair, snuggling her to my chest. âI didnât get to spend enough time with you the other day. I had to come back and get my little girl fix.â
âGina?â Evangeline groans, rubbing sleep from her eyes as she steps into the room. âWhat are you doing here?â
âHey, honey.â I pat the space next to me. âI was worried, and asked your father if I could come back and check on you. Howâre you feeling?â
Vangie curls into my side, resting her head on my shoulder, âA little better, I think.â
With my right hand, I smooth the hair from her face, pressing a kiss to her forehead.
âIâm glad youâre here,â she says, yawning.
âSo am I, sweet girl.â
§
âGigi, wake up!â
My eyes flutter open to find Willow bouncing in Jeffâs bed next to me and Evangeline carrying a tray of bacon and eggs. âMade you breakfast,â that little angel says, smiling sweetly.
My eyes feel wet again. And this time I canât blame it on my vagina, because Jeff is nowhere around. Dammit. âThank you, Vangie. Thatâs so sweet.â
She shrugs her shoulders as if itâs nothing, setting the tray next to me and swooping her little sister up before she can dump the food all over the bed. âThis little monkey helped.â
âYeah,â Willow agrees, struggling to get out of her sisterâs arms. âI putted the jelly on your toast.â
That explains the gobs of grape jam. I couldnât wipe the smile from my face if I tried. âThank you both so much.â
âYouâre welcome. Enjoy.â
When the two girls exit the room, shutting the door behind them, I allow the tears to fall. I feel like Iâm living someone elseâs life. Then I remember that I am and that none of this is mine, and I cry some more.
Time to call in reinforcements.
âHey, hooch.â
âQuick,â I say sniveling into the phone. âMake me laugh.â
âAre youâWhat the hell did he do to you?â Spencer shouts, jumping to the wrong conclusion.
âIt wasnât him,â I rush out. âIt was the girls.â
Spence groans. âOh, God. What happened?â
âThey mâmade me bâbreakfast,â I sob, and my best friend loses her shit laughing at me.
âOh, Gina.â
âThis is gonna hurt, Spence. Itâs gonna hurt so fucking bad. It already does.â
âOr,â she drawls out, âmaybe youâre finally right where you belong.â
âNuh-uhn,â I say, blowing my nose into the napkin on my tray. âDonât you start filling my head with more bullshit than what is already there. I need you to make me laugh. Like right now, before Jeff wakes up and comes in here and sees this ugly, blubbering mess.â
âYouâll never guess what your godson did last night,â Spence finally starts, and I can already tell itâs gonna be good.
âWhich one?â
âSavage.â Oh, his stories are always the best.
âWhat?â
âSo, he was bathing in my tub last night, while I was watching TV in my room, and all of a sudden heâs screaming his little ass offâ¦â
âWhat happened?â
It takes her a moment to stop laughing before she continues. âSo, he shouts, âMom, Mom, you have to come see this,â and of course Iâm already out of the bed rushing to see what all of the fuss is about.â Spence snorts. âI walk in, and heâs standing butt-ass naked in the tub, bent over, trying to see between his legs.â
âOh, God. Iâm scared.â
âHâhis hand is all up under there, and heâs poking his ball sack, so Iâm all, âWhat the hell are you doing, Kyle?â and he lifts his head, serious as shit, and says, âRemember when I told you I losed my marbles? I musta swallowed two of âem, cuz I found âem. Theyâre in my nuts!âââ
