July was supposed to be perfect. Everyone was getting along, my powers were developing nicely, and I would have my birthday.
It started perfectly. We all just hung out together, having fun. The treaty was dissolved, meaning I forced everyone down to La push beach one fine afternoon.
"This is a terrible idea," Edward told me for the 15th time during the drive. As I drove us to the Rez, I made him sit in the back of Jasper's car with Bree and Noah.
"If you tell me that one more time, I will personally scream as loud as I can in my head and send it straight to your mind-reading brain." My threat finally shut him up and caused everyone else to burst out laughing.
"That is my new favorite sentence," Noah said, trying to control his laughter.
Bree just turned and laughed straight at him.
"You're supposed to be on my side," Edward complained to her.
"I'll be on your side when you're right," she replied.
"We're here!" I yelled, pulling up to the beach.
The entire pack was there, along with everyone's imprints. Jacob was there, but Bella was doing something with her father. As I got out of the car, I saw Emmet's Jeep pull up with him, Rosalie, Carlisle, Esme, and Alice inside.
We all spent the day hanging out on the beach. The clouds covered the sun, and no one had to worry about anything. It was a day to just mess around with each other and let loose.
I was sitting down for a moment while chaos was going on around me.
"I bet I'm stronger than you," Edward said suddenly, looking at Jasper.
"You are not," Jasper replied. "I could take you down right now."
"I don't think you can," Noah told the two of them, leaving Alice to join this argument. "But I think I could."
"That's even less likely," Emmet yelled at them.
"Hey!" Edward and Noah screamed.
With neither of them paying attention, Jasper jumped to attack both of them to prove a point. All three boys were quickly wrestling on the beach, throwing each other around.
"Boys!" Esme yelled, upset that they were fighting. But they did not stop.
"Should we be concerned?" Sam asked, looking over at me.
"No," I told him. "They do this all the time. They're just messing around."
As we all watched their wrestling match, Jacob sat down next to me on the sand. "I wanted to apologize," he told me. "I've been unnecessarily mean to you, and you don't deserve that."
"How are you and Bella?" I asked him, not really acknowledging the apology.
He smiled just thinking about her. "I know you all think she's a pain in the but, and sometimes she is, but she's been really sweet recently."
"You're not imprinted, though."
"No, we're not. But she makes me happy. Is that such a bad thing?"
I paused, just watching my fiancé tackle both Edward and Noah with a stupid grin on my face. "No, I guess it's not."
Both Edward and Noah groaned as Jasper slammed them to the ground. He jumped up quickly, yelling, "I win!" He looked straight at me as he shouted with a wide grin and bright eyes.
I smiled as I realized the waves were slowly rising next to him without him noticing. I got up from the floor and made my over to him. I wrapped him in a celebratory hug, watching the water inch closer. As soon as it rose close to us, I threw Jasper on the ground, making him soaking wet.
I felt his shock as he looked up at me. "You punk!" He yelled, getting up and grabbing me. He pulled me deep into the water, soaking both of us. I could have fought back, but I was laughing too hard.
A few of the boys followed us, and soon we were swimming in the water in our clothes. It should have been cold, but none of us realized it.
As we got out of the water, the clouds started to shift, letting the sunlight shine down on parts of the beach. One ray landed straight on Jasper, making him sparkle. Jasper quickly ran out of the sunlight.
"No one else is here!" Alice yelled at him. "You don't have to worry about it."
"Thanks for the heads up, Alice!" Jasper yelled back sarcastically.
"I want to try!" I yelled, running over to the sunlight. It has been shady since I had turned, and I hadn't seen myself in the sunlight yet.
As I reached the patch of sun, I stuck my hands out, wanting to see the effect, except nothing happened.
"Is she even a vampire?!" Emmet yelled as he looked at me.
I looked up at Jasper and saw him staring wide-eyed back at me. "I don't sparkle, do I?" I asked him.
"You do not," he told me.
"That's so weird," I mumbled, looking down at my arms.
Later that night, I was still upset about it. "Emma," Jasper told me as I was eating dinner. "You gotta relax about this stuff."
"Says the boy who was freaking about this stuff a few weeks ago." I didn't look up at him as I spoke. It was weird to me that I was so different from the rest of them.
"That was when I was afraid that you weren't safe," he told me, sitting next to me. He wrapped his arms around me and nuzzled his face in my shoulder. "Now I know you're more than capable of handling anything thrown your way."
"You're the worst," I told him.
"I love you too," he replied.
As he pulled back, I finally turned to face him. As I did, he gasped in surprise.
"What now?"
"Your eyes are green again."
"Of course they are."
We went into the living room to show everyone my green eyes when Alice suddenly freaked out. Her eyes glazed over as she was sucked into a vision.
"I don't... I don't... what.... How... who...."
"Are you sure," Edward asked as Alice came out of the vision.
"What's going on?" I asked.
"Who are they?" Alice asked Edward.
Edward glanced quickly at me, prompting me to ask, "What's going on?"
"No," Alice mumbled, looking over at me.
I hated not knowing what was going on, so I reached forward and grabbed Edward's arm. It was the quickest way to read their minds.
"No!" Edward yelled as I grabbed his hand, knowing what I was trying to do.
His power took over my mind as I focused on Alice's mind. I could see her vision clearly, and I hated what I saw.
"No," I mumbled, feeling terrified. "No, it can't be."
I felt my legs give out from under me as Jasper grabbed me. He sat on the ground with me and pulled me close to him. His power took over Edward's, but the vision was stuck in my mind.
"No, Jazz, it can't," I mumbled, tears streaming down my face. "We were happy. It was good."
"It'll be okay," he told me, pulling me closer. "I promise."
"No, it won't."
