âFor me? What are you even talking about?â
Molly groaned in frustration, stomping her hands in the air. âForget it. You wouldnât understand!â
Lucas shook his head, baffled, but decided not to press her further. Instead, he followed Aurora upstairs, knocking softly on her door. âAurora, you okay?â
Inside, Aurora sat on her bed, her phone in hand. The exam results had been released at midnight, and sheâd immediately messaged those who cared about her. Among them was Rickey, her friend of many years.
But hours had passed without a reply.
Recently, their conversations had grown scarce.
She convinced herself that he was probably busy with school and didnât have time for her trivial updates.
âIâm fine,â she replied as she turned off her phone. Her smile for Lucas was faint but sincere. âIs Molly still mad?â
âIâll deal with her later,â Lucas said. âSo is there really nothing going on with you and Dunn?â
Aurora shook her head firmly. In truth, she didnât even think of Dunn as a friend. âWeâve only met a few times.â
âWhat about that handkerchief? The one Ginger ruinedâwas that his?â Aurora nodded.
Lucas let out a slow breath, pieces of the puzzle clicking into place. This wasnât new; it had been brewing for a while. âAurora, Iâm not going to tell you what you already know. But Mollyâs not entirely wrong. The Finch family made it clear they didnât want anything to do with us, so thereâs no point in keeping any ties with them. That said, my dad always told me the most important thing in life is to be happy. So, if this makes you happy, my dad and I will stand by you, no matter what anyone else says.â
Aurora thought of Rafael and couldnât help but feel her mood lift. âBut what about Molly?â
Lucas scratched his head, sighing. âIâll talk to her. Donât worry. I wonât let her say anything before youâre ready to go public.â But unbeknownst to him, it was already too late.
Molly, fueled by righteous indignation, had tracked down Dunnâs number. Now in bed, her phone screen glowing, she furiously typed out a message.
As she hit send, Lucas knocked on her door.
gαâηÏνððsï¹cðm has it all âWhat do you want? Go away!â Molly snapped.
Lucas poked his head in, undeterred. âAre you sure? I was going to take you out for dessert, but if youâd rather stay madâ¦â
Molly bolted upright. âWait! Donât go!â
Grinning, Lucas stepped inside. He reached out and tweaked her nose. âWhy are you so hot-headed all the time?â
âItâs your fault!â Molly grumbled.
âFine, fine, I messed up.â
Though still annoyed, Molly knew this was as close to an apology as sheâd get.
On their way to the dessert shop, she reluctantly agreed to keep Auroraâs situation under wraps.
Later that evening, they returned home, the night sky deep and quiet. Molly clutched a bag of art supplies, while Lucas carried two others. They strolled under the streetlights, licking popsicles.
âBut seriously, if Aurora ends up with someone else, wouldnât you feel bad?â Molly asked.
