Aurora, initially taken aback, wasnât sure what to make of Addieâs apologyâshe doubted someone like Addie would offer any genuine remorse.
But then she wondered if Dunn might have had a hand in it, so she agreed to speak with them.
The Lewis family bowed repeatedly, and Addie, still sobbing, looked pitiful. Aurora sensed it wasnât out of genuine remorse, but because Addie had been so thoroughly humiliated.
âAlright,â Aurora said. âI wonât press the issue.â
Addie had already been ousted from the class group chat. Everyone in the class now knew what she had done, and it was clear she wouldnât be accepted in the future.
Addie, usually so proud, now couldnât hold her head high.
Aurora, despite her compassion, decided not to make things any harder for them. She waved for them to leave.
But Addie, desperate, stepped forward and grabbed Auroraâs hand. âAurora, please, could you talk to Dunn and ask him to stop making things harder for my parents? I promise I wonât bother you again, Iâll stay far away from you.â
âWhat?â Mollyâs eyes went wide. âDunn?â
Lucas quickly covered her mouth, his shock evident, but he knew better than to let Molly blurt everything out.
Auroraâs face fell, and she yanked her hand from Addieâs. âYouâre mistaken. I have nothing to do with him. Everyone knows that our families havenât been in contact for over a decade. I thought you were here to apologize because you truly realized your mistake, but it seems likeââ
âI really do know I was wrong!â Addie blurted out, backpedaling rapidly. âI was wrong, Iâm sorry!â
âYou should leave. This is over, and please, be careful with what you say.â
The second part of Auroraâs sentence hung heavily in the air. Addie, looking terrified, understood its weight.
After the Lewis family left, Molly turned to Lucas, pulling his hand away. âAre you out of your mind? You like Dunn?â
G a lno v els .com is packed with thrilling adventures Aurora stiffened, not willing to admit anything. âYouâre mistaken. Thereâs nothing going on between us.â
âThen why did Addie bring up Dunn?â Molly demanded, clearly agitated. âHave you forgotten what Dunnâs great-grandfather said before he died? He told our family to sever ties with theirs! Itâs absurd, as if anyone would want to be associated with them!â
Aurora said nothing, but from the corner of her eye, she noticed the nine boxes of fortune cookies sitting on the coffee table in the living room. They were sent by Dunnâunder someone elseâs name.
Those boxes felt like a constant reminder of how difficult it was for her to be with Dunn.
âMolly, itâs not what you think,â Aurora said. âI donât like Dunn, and thereâs nothing going on between us.â
Molly opened her mouth to argue, but Lucas interjected, âMolly, just relax, okay?â
Aurora only felt the exhaustion sink deeper. Without another word, she turned and headed upstairs.
Sensing her sadness, Lucas turned to Molly with a frown. âWhatâs with you? Why are you making such a fuss? Auroraâs not a kid anymore. She knows what sheâs doing.â
Mollyâs annoyance flared. âOh, come on, Lucas! Donât you get it? Iâm doing this for your sake!â
