âWho cares! Do you think I canât afford to get them cleaned myself?â Addie scoffed, her frustration boiling over.
Aurora tilted her head. âSo, you donât need me to compensate you?â
âYouâ¦â
Auroraâs smile widened. âThanks for your generosity and open-mindedness.â
Addie stood there, speechless.
As she fumed behind them, Aurora and Rickey walked away, snickering.
The next afternoon brought an unexpected twist. Right before the exam, Auroraâs bagâcontaining her admission ticket and other test essentialsâdisappeared.
Rickey, unbothered, reached into his own bag and pulled out a spare. âHere. I figured youâd lose something, so I came prepared. Good thing Iâve got your admission ticket with me.â
Aurora took the bag but eyed him suspiciously, her brows furrowing. âRickey, you didnât take my admission ticket, did you?â
Rickey shot her a sharp glare, clearly offended. âSeriously? Think about who walked by you just now.â
Auroraâs mind raced before her expression changed, realization dawning. âAddie?â
Rickey sighed, too exasperated to even bother responding.
This kind of nonsense was nothing newâevery year, someone would let jealousy or exam pressure push them into doing something utterly ridiculous. One year, a student had even tried to sabotage anotherâs bubble sheet.
âHurry up and take the exam. Youâre such a silly one,â Rickey muttered, shaking his head in mock frustration.
âOkay,â Aurora replied, nodding as she took a few steps away. But she suddenly stopped and turned back to face him. âRickey, my uncle has booked a family dinner to celebrate tonight, so I wonât wait for you.â
Rickey paused, raising an eyebrow. âSeriously? Youâre celebrating with your family? Are you that confident youâll be admitted to Dugruayae University?â
Auroraâs eyes widened in surprise. âHow did you know Iâm going to apply to Dugruayae University?â
Rickey shrugged nonchalantly. âI just do. When are you available?â
Aurora thought for a moment before answering, âIn a couple of days. Youâre not leaving anytime soon, right?â
Rickey didnât catch the rest of her words. Seeing Aurora about to run off again, he called out urgently, âAurora! Can we meet tonight? I need to talk to you.â
Aurora hesitated, uncertainty flickering across her face. But then she nodded. âIâll try to sneak out during dinner.â
âOkay.â
Aurora sat by the window, her thoughts miles away as she stared absent-mindedly at the empty campus outside. There, standing alone against the fading light, was Rickey. His silhouette, resolute yet strangely solitary, lingered in her mind long after he walked away.
Aurora froze.
