Lucian glanced at him and wiped his mouth with one hand. âNo wonder even Raelyn prefers you. When I asked her for help, she didnât hesitate to turn me down. Cold as ice. And sheâs the one who gave birth to us. Youâd think that would mean something, but she doesnât care about either of us.â
Adrian frowned, choosing his next words carefully. âShe has her own life. And so do you. Youâre a grown man now. Itâs time to take responsibility for your own actions.â
âNo, no, no.â Lucian shook his head, a dark smile tugging at his lips. âThey gave me life. That means they canât just wash their hands of me. Whoever brought me into this world has to answer for the mess they left behind.â
Aurora stirred, her sleepy eyes blinking up at Adrian. âDaddy, whatâs he talking about?â
âNothing, sweetheart. Go back to sleep.â Turning back to Lucian, Adrian said, âYou know, my daughterâs in first grade, and even she understands that you have to clean up your own messes. Donât you think itâs a bit embarrassing to have a mindset more childish than hers?â Lucian didnât respond.
A knock then interrupted the moment, and a bodyguard entered the room. âMr. Dury, a guy from the Miller family is here for the child.â Auroraâs eyes flew open, fear flickering in their depths. âDaddy! Letâs go together!â
Lucian laughed, the sound sharp and mocking. âYour daddyâs not going anywhere!â
Aurora was jolted by his presence, her eyes welling with tears, yet fear stifled her cries. Adrian comforted her with a soft pat on the back, but his words to Lucian carried an unmistakable chill. âDo not frighten my daughter.â
Lucian flung the can into the stove and gestured dismissively. âFree of them in.â
Callan stepped through the door. To outsiders, Callan appeared as a fragile elder, yet his keen eyes missed nothing, and his actions were sharp and calculated. Upon entering, he assessed every individual and detail in the room.
âApologies for being late, Mr. Miller.â
Adrian stood, placing Aurora into his arms. âEnsure her safety.â
âAbsolutely, Mr. Miller.â
In that moment, Aurora stretched her arms towards Adrian, pleading tearfully, âDaddy! I want to stay with you.â
âStay calm, Aurora,â Adrian murmured softly, his fingers brushing her hair until her sobs subsided.
âDaddy, promise youâll return to us.â
âI promise, my dear,â he assured her.
âLetâs pinky swear on it!â
Adrian intertwined his pinky with hers, their fingers forming a heartfelt promise. âAnd when you return, greet your mommy and sister for me.â
Aurora brushed away her tears, her voice trembling slightly. âOkay! Daddy, please promise youâll come back soon!â
Lucian, his patience wearing thin, pressed on. âAre you finished? Have you said all you need to? Well, what are you waiting for? Leave!â
