Callan understood immediately. âGot it.â
The news of Auroraâs abduction spread quickly.
Friends and family constantly reached out to Joelle, each call urging her to take care of herself.
However, Joelle resisted their visits. âToo many visitors might draw the wrong kind of attention or bring danger. I suspect Mollyâs recent scare was no accident.â
Shawn, respecting her wishes, stopped asking to visit. âIs there anything I can do to help?â
âThere is.â Joelle had poured over Raelynâs letter countless times. âCould you investigate who else had children with Raelyn? It seems such arrangements are common for those unable to conceive. Amara is now institutionalized, and I must stay with Molly. Could you investigate this for me?â
âSure,â Shawn replied. Just before hanging up, he added, âJoelle, thereâs something else. Iâve uncovered that Raelynâs assets abroad could surpass the wealth of some nations. Itâs a massive fortune, and honestly, such wealth isnât always a blessing. Have you spoken to Adrian about this?â
âAbsolutely,â Joelle responded, her grip tightening on the letter. âBut no amount of wealth can compensate for the safety of my daughter.â
Shawn conceded to her viewpoint, and Joelle sternly added, âAnd if they think they can simply claim that wealth, theyâre sorely mistaken.â
Anyone audacious enough to abduct her child would suffer harsh repercussions.
After the call, Leah walked past, carrying a hefty bag of groceries. Given the ongoing family emergency, everyone had reduced their trips outside.
Callan would handle the procurement of necessities, arranging for them to be delivered right to their door.
âHold on a moment.â
Leah stopped. âMaâam? What do you need?â
âHave you checked everything?â
âAbsolutely, Iâve checked everything thoroughly. All is as it should be.â
Joelle moved closer. âLeah, in these times, please make sure all food is safe. Pay special attention to anything Molly might come into contact withâinspect everything meticulously.â
Leah looked past Joelle and saw the nanny descending the stairs with a bottle. This nanny, chosen through a stringent hiring process after Mollyâs birth, was a recent addition.
âUnderstood.â
As Joelle turned, she accidentally collided with the nanny. âDid you catch that? Please ensure youâre extra vigilant with Molly right now. For your diligence, Iâll triple your salary.â
âThank you, maâam.â
One week later, Adrian began his ascent of Mount Everest.
Joelle found herself unable to reach him as easily as before.
While nursing Molly in the peaceful courtyard, her eyes often wandered over the barren landscape, watching leaves drift to the ground as a sense of melancholy grew within her.
