Rafael tended to the boy, applying medicine to his scraped skin, and asked what had happened.
âI heard Molly cry, so I came to check on her. I was watching her when the crib suddenly collapsed,â Lucas recounted.
Joelle found the incident puzzling. She and Adrian had spent a long time selecting the best crib for Molly, and this one was the sturdiest of them all. Why would it collapse like that?
Adrian turned to Leah. âHave you noticed anyone suspicious coming into this room or near the crib?â
Leah paused for a moment, thinking, before shaking her head. âMany people came to see Molly, but I didnât notice anything. Iâm so sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Miller.â
âNever mind,â Adrian said, deciding to let the matter go for now. âIs Molly alright?â
Mollyâs cries finally ceased, and Joelle cradled her in her arms.
âSheâs fine,â Joelle said, her eyes softening as she turned to Lucas. âThank you for protecting Molly.â
âItâs nothing,â Lucas replied shyly, scratching his head. After his wound was treated and bandaged, he ran off to play with Aurora.
âLucas rarely shows enthusiasm at home. He only becomes playful when heâs here,â Allie remarked, watching the boy leave.
âAll he does at home is study. Of course, he wonât be as enthusiastic,â Rafael commented, packing away the medical kit.
Allie crossed her arms and looked at him. âItâs for his own good. He has to be as skilled as you, or even more.â
Rafael didnât argue, instead turning to Joelle and Adrian. âLucas seems to like hanging around here. Can I send him here every summer and winter break?â
âOf course,â Joelle replied.
âHeâs always welcome,â Adrian added.
By the time the party ended late into the night, the house had finally returned to tranquility after a busy day.
It was only then that Adrian had the time to read the letter Rafael had given him earlier.
Halfway through reading, his expression changed drastically. Joelle walked in, and Adrian quickly hid the letter under the table.
âWhat are you reading?â she asked.
âNothing.â
But Adrianâs attempt at secrecy was far from convincing. Perhaps it was because they had lived together for so long that one look at him made Joelle realize it was far from ânothing.â
Adrian sighed, handing her the letter. âRaelynâs dead.â
Joelle caught her breath. The surprise echoed in her mind as she read the letter. âShe left all her assets to you?â
âYes.â
Adrian sat in the chair, the moonlight casting a melancholic shadow around him.
