The assistant next to him pulled at his sleeve. âWhat are you getting at? Fannie was asking if you could attend an event out of town this weekend.â
After the meeting concluded, Mayer stood at the door, waiting for what felt like an eternity before Fannie finally emerged. Now, he had the opportunity to speak with her alone.
âFannie,â he called out with unease.
Fannie didnât tear her eyes from her meeting notes as she replied, âWhatâs up?â
âI apologize for earlier. My head was somewhere else, and the words were out of my mouth before I realized.â
âItâs fine. I noticed you were zoning out, so I had to pull you back to the meeting.â
Mayer hesitated for a second before saying, âThereâs something else I want to discuss with you. Is tonight good?â
Fannie finally raised her head, responding half-jokingly, âWe have plenty of time for communication during work hours. Could you please respect my personal time in the evenings and allow me some more space?â
With a lollipop stuck between her lips, Judie walked past them. But when she reached the corner within earshot, she stopped to eavesdrop.
Mayer lowered his head, noting the implication behind Fannieâs words. âIâm sorry. Itâll never happen again.â
Fannie sighed and patted his shoulder. âYouâve got a promising future, Mayer. Trust me, itâs better if you put your time and energy into your work than waste it on trivial matters. Letting your emotions take over wonât get you far in the industry. Relationships donât always reward your efforts, but work can.â
Mayer forced a smile. âI get it.â
They exchanged a look and nodded in tacit understanding, resolving the matter amicably.
When they reached a corner, they turned in opposite directions and parted ways, both literally and figuratively.
âDo you really like Fannie that much?â Judie stood at attention as Mayer pivoted into the corner, nearly hitting him as she uncrossed her legs.
Mayerâs expression immediately soured at the sight of her. âWhatâs it to you?â
âHarsh,â Judie said, giving him a once-over. âWeâll be working together soon and might have to fake dating. It wouldnât hurt to get to know each other a little more.â
Mayer was passionate about his craft, and Judieâs laidback attitude about work never failed to get on his nerves.
âFirst, Iâm never going to agree to faking a relationship with you. Secondly, Fannie doesnât like me and has already made that clear to me. You can report it back to Bobby.â
Judieâs eyes widened a fraction as she took the lollipop out of her mouth. âWhat do you mean?â
Mayer closed the distance between them with a single step, one hand in his pocket. âYou really thought I wouldnât see it? You and Bobby arenât a couple. That manâs gaze doesnât leave Fannie the moment it spots her.â
