Mayer stood at the door, carrying two pizzas. At his feet was a collection of several takeout bags. Bobby couldnât suppress his annoyance at the sight of him.
Mayer, for his part, was taken aback to find Bobby here. His only connection to him was through Judie, who he knew as Bobbyâs girlfriend. Upon seeing Bobby at Fannieâs residence, Mayerâs immediate reaction was to peer inside, a wave of relief washing over him when he spotted Judie.
âIâm here to see Fannie,â Mayer announced, trying to ease the palpable tension.
Bobbyâs response was curt and frosty. âSheâs not here.â It was the first time Mayer had formally met Bobby, yet the air crackled with undeniable hostility that Mayer couldnât ignore â nor its probable cause.
Just then, Fannie appeared, her voice warm and inviting. âDonât mind him. Just come inside.â
âOkay.â Mayer knew Fannie wouldnât have prepared slippers for him, so he came wearing his own.
Judie, lounging on the sofa, eyed Mayer curiously. âMayer, what brings you here?â
Mayer responded smoothly, âI needed to discuss some work-related matters with Fannie. Plus, I thought Iâd lend a hand with dinner since sheâs injured and might find cooking to be a bit of a hassle.â
Judie leaned forward, resting her chin on her hand, her tone laced with a hint of teasing. âOh? Did you move to the apartment below Fannieâs just for the convenience of seeing her more often?â
Normally, such a remark would have made Mayer flush with shyness, prompting him to change the subject. But today, he held Judieâs gaze unflinchingly.

Known for his polite manner, his directness seemed to strike a nerve with Judie, who found his boldness unexpectedly jarring. Mayer kept up his facade of innocence, remarking nonchalantly, âYes, I moved here for Fannie.â
Judie paused, visibly taken aback, and behind him, Bobbyâs expression turned sharply hostile.
Fannie, overhearing Mayer, sensed something odd. Before the silence stretched too long, Mayer continued, âFannie is incredibly generous. I just returned to the⦠country, and she has been a great help both in life and work.â There was nothing wrong with what he said. The topic ended as Fannie called everyone over to help.
The four of them gathered at the dining table. Bobby quickly claimed the seat to Fannieâs left, while Mayer attempted to sit to her right, only to be nudged aside by Judie. âSorry, I want to sit next to Fannie!â
Mayer, without a word, settled into the seat directly across from Fannie, visibly displeased.
With a sheepish grin, Fannie exclaimed, âOh, I forgot about the drinks.â
As Bobby and Mayer rose in unison, each offering, âIâll get it,â tension flared between them.
Bobbyâs irritation was palpable. âYou seem quite familiar with Fannieâs place, donât you?â
Smirking faintly, Mayer replied, âThe layoutâs the same as mine.â
Bobby scoffed. Handling Jett had been exhausting, and now Mayer was an entirely new headache.
