Fannie recalled the previous unpleasant incident when her boss had sabotaged her during a contract discussion with Judie.
âWhat? Hoping to cash in on this too?â she responded coolly.
âNo.â The boss laughed, trying to deflect. âIâm just curious about how many slots you managed to get. It could be a good opportunity for our other artists if you have extras.â
âJust two,â Fannie replied casually.
âIâm thinking of giving one to Judie.â
âAh, but with Bobby supporting her, she doesnât really need the help, does she?â Fannie remarked, sensing an ulterior motive.
The boss quickly shifted the conversation, his tone less relaxed now. âAnd the other slot? Whoâs that for?â
âââ¡â â¤ââââ£â⢠ââ ââââââ¥âââ¢.âââ âStill undecided.â
Rubbing his hands together eagerly, the boss suggested, âHereâs an idea, Fannie. Weâve invested a lot in Selma, but sheâs not catching on as we hoped. How about giving her a spot on the show and pairing her with one of our male talents for some extra publicity?â
Fannie felt a wave of revulsion at his manipulative proposal.
âThis is Amyâs platform,â Fannie said firmly. âDonât you think she might blacklist us if we exploit it like that? If Selma is truly talented, sheâll make it on her own. Sheâs already gaining traction with her lead role in that web series. Overexposing her on a variety show isnât wise.â
âBut the schedule lines up perfectly!â he argued, his voice rising with enthusiasm. âAfter she wraps up filming, she could use the variety show to boost her profile. Itâs an ideal plan.â
Before Fannie could counter, the office door burst open. Judie entered, brandishing her designer bag without bothering to knock.
âBoss, Fannie promised this slot to me from the beginning. If Selma is interested, she should come to me,â Judie declared, her tone sharp and demanding.
The boss, visibly sweating, stammered, âYes, of course.â
âBut with your talent and beauty, sometimes itâs generous to support those who might benefit more from such opportunities.â
âDo I not need support, then?â Judie turned to Fannie, her eye makeup enhancing her look of vulnerability, as if tears were imminent.
âLook, Fannie, Iâve just finished school and havenât done much yet. Even though people know who I am, itâs all because of Bobbyâs help. I need to show that Iâm more than just a pretty face supported by a man!â
Her words were full of determination, but her pitiful attitude didnât win Fannieâs sympathy.
âFine, there are two slots: one for you and one for Selma.â
Both Judie and the boss were pleased with the resolution. During lunch, Judie approached, wearing her sunglasses.
âFannie, is it okay if I join you?â
