âIâve always thought choosing you was the right decision. Otherwise, I wouldnât have agreed to be with you. So, no. I donât regret anything, Jett.â
âIf I ever made a mistake, would you forgive me?â
Jettâs questions were a little out of the ordinary, but Fannie chose not to read too much into them.
âAs long as you donât hurt me, I suppose I could forgive you.â
He fell silent for a moment before pulling her into his arms.
âFifi, believe me, if I ever hurt you, know that it was never my intention.â
He seemed a bit off tonight, but she just assumed he was tired. She patted his shoulder.
âI know. Now, go home.â
He released her.
âIâll leave after you get inside.â
Fannie got out of the car and headed upstairs. It wasnât until the lights in her apartment flickered on that Jett finally looked away.
He picked up his phone from the dashboard, checked the recent call log, and dialed the number back.
âIâve told you not to call me when sheâs with me.â
âDid Fannie find out?â
âNo.â
âAre you still with her now? If not, can you come see me? I miss you.â
Jett glanced at Fannieâs window, his gaze deep and thoughtful.
âThis is the last time.â
One of Fannieâs acquaintances, a producer, had collapsed during a recording session, prompting Fannie to purchase a bouquet of flowers for her visit. To her surprise, it was also the day Katherine was scheduled to give birth.
As the elevator hummed to a stop on the obstetrics floor, the doors slid open. There, cradling her swollen belly, Katherine sat in a wheelchair, wheeled in by Shawn. Bobby, right behind them, juggled an unwieldy stack of medical forms.
âOh, what an unexpected twist!â Katherine managed to say, but her words were abruptly interrupted by a sharp contraction.
âShawn!â she gasped.
Shawn was by her side in an instant, kneeling down to offer his hand, his voice full of encouragement. âHold on, honey. Youâre incredible!â
âItâs all on you! Youâve dragged me into this chaos!â Katherineâs outcry pierced the air, her face slick with perspiration and her lips ghostly white from the pain.
âIâm truly sorry.â Shawnâs voice was filled with regret as he admitted to every mistake he had made. âOnce weâre through this, Iâll pamper you endlessly. An office building, wasnât it? Well, itâs already yours.â
âReally?â Katherineâs discomfort seemed to ease slightly at the news.
âAbsolutely. Youâre the most resilient woman out there! You can handle this pain, canât you?â
Clutching her lower back, Katherine mustered a burst of resolve. âYes, I can!â
