âI know, but Iâll always be grateful.â
Jett had mentioned before that he wanted her to meet his parents. After everything that had happened and seeing his goodness firsthand, Fannie felt ready.
âIf youâre free this week, Jett, Iâd like you to take me to meet your family.â
âNo rush,â Jett replied, glancing at her. âI was too eager last time. You were right. We should take things slow.â
âOh, okay.â
As they drove, Jettâs phone rang, waking Fannie from her nap. Since he was driving, she picked up the phone for him.
âItâs Selma. Why is she calling?â
Selma was currently filming a short drama that Jett had invested in. Fannie immediately sensed a connection but couldnât help feeling a twinge of suspicion over the call. If it was work-related, Selma should have contacted her directly, not Jett. If it was personal, what could Selma possibly want with him?
However, Jett remained calm and composed as he said, âAnswer it. See what she needs.â
âOkay.â Fannie picked up the phone and spoke into it.
âHello, Selma? Itâs me, Fannie.â
âFannie?â
âJettâs driving right now. He wanted to know why you called.â
âUh, itâs about the crew,â Selma answered. âSince heâs busy, never mind.â
Fannieâs expression tightened slightly.
âSelma, if itâs work-related, you should discuss it with me first.â
âI know,â Selma replied, sounding somewhat aggrieved.
âBut I figured you wouldnât want to talk about work because of the funeral. Jett told me to contact him first so I wouldnât disturb you.â
âSo that was it.â
Fannie glanced at Jett, who was focused on the road, seemingly unaffected by what Selma was saying. She suddenly felt guilty for suspecting him.
âFrom now on, just talk to me. The funeral is over. Iâm okay.â
âAlright.â
Selmaâs issue wasnât anything major, so Fannie quickly resolved it. After hanging up, she turned to Jett.
âSorry for causing you so much trouble these past few days.â
âDonât mention it.â Jett smiled. âYouâre my girlfriend. Itâs what Iâm supposed to do as your boyfriend.â
Fannie wanted to thank him again, but she hesitated. If she kept being overly formal, he might feel more distant.
When Jett stopped the car in front of her apartment building, Fannie turned to say goodbye.
But Jett suddenly asked, âDo you regret choosing me?â
She paused, then smiled.
