Half a month later, at an industry gala, Fannie attended with Selma, hoping to network with directors and producers.
During the event, a waiter approached her.
âMiss Cooper, thereâs someone asking for you in the lounge.â
Fannie followed the waiter to the dimly lit lounge, where she found Katherine, visibly pregnant, comfortably nestled among cushions on a sofa.
âHi, Fannie. About Bobbyâs fatherâs situation, could you perhaps persuade your boyfriend to be lenient?â
Fannieâs response was firm and unmoving.
âBobby must deal with the consequences of his actions.â
Katherine was pregnant, and Bobbyâs friends had always treated Fannie with kindness. Yet, Fannie maintained a polite, measured tone as she replied, âWithout a lesson, who knows how much further Bobby might go in his disrespect towards my boyfriend?â
Katherine sighed, her concern for Bobby evident. As a friend, she found it impossible to stand by and watch his family fall apart. âIâm truly sorry for his actions.â
Fannie raised an eyebrow, skeptical. âYour apologies are appreciated, but can you guarantee he wonât disturb my boyfriend and me again?â
Katherine hesitated before answering. âI can. But can you ask your boyfriend to show some leniency?â
Fannieâs response was firm and unwavering. âIâm sorry, but thereâs nothing I can do. This matter is between them. Your coming to me suggests you know Bobby has complicated things between my boyfriend and me. Unfortunately, Iâm not in a position to influence this situation. Youâll need to find another solution.â
Katherine leaned forward, her voice softening as she appealed to Fannieâs past connection with Bobby. âDidnât you and Bobby share some history? Although his personal life is indeed a mess, canât you plead for him out of past affection?â
Fannieâs reply was concise and resolute. âOur past interactions donât warrant any current obligations. He helped me once, and I settled that debt. Thereâs nothing left to reconsider.â
Katherine was taken aback by the firmness in Fannieâs voice. âSo, you harbor no feelings for him anymore?â
Fannie clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms, but her expression remained composed. âAbsolutely not,â she responded quickly, her voice steady and unwavering.
âI understand,â Katherine murmured, her expression resigned. âI apologize for the imposition.â
âItâs fine,â Fannie replied, though her tone remained firm. âBut I really canât assist you with this.â
âI understand.â
Fannie stood up and left the lounge.
Left alone, Katherine placed a hand on her swollen belly before calling out, âYou can leave now.â
The door to the second floor opened, and Bobby and Shawn stepped out one after the other.
