She sprinted toward him, her hesitation melting as Jett opened his arms. Though a tinge of shyness lingered, she stepped into his embrace.
He ruffled her hair and inhaled her scent.
âFifi, Iâve missed you.â
âMm.â
âDid you miss me?â
Fannie nodded.
âI did.â
Jett took her hand and led her out of the airport to the hotel to check in.
Once inside their room, Jettâs restraint evaporated. He cupped her face, his breath warm and uneven.
Their relationship had always been a tug-of-war, each too stubborn to let the other win.
Moments of tenderness were rareâno kisses, and even holding hands was infrequent.
âFifi.â
Her gaze met his briefly before fluttering away, the warmth in her eyes betraying her affection. The soft light created a warm glow around them.
Knock! Knock!
A sharp knock broke the spell.
âFannie, open up!â The voice was unmistakableâBobby!
Fannie gasped. Why couldnât he just let her be?
Before she could do anything, Bobby was growing impatient outside.
âCome out, Fannie! Iâll give you to the count of three!â Jettâs expression darkened as he moved toward the door, pulling Fannie protectively close.
âYouâve got impeccable timing, huh? Couldnât wait another minute!â Bobby sneered from the other side.
âA minute? Thatâs all you need? I think you need to see a doctor.â
Bobby didnât stop there. With a swift move, he grabbed Fannieâs wrist, attempting to drag her away.
Jettâs grip tightened. âLet her go, Bobby. Sheâs my girlfriend. Try acting like a human being for once!â
âGirlfriend? So what?â Bobbyâs words dripped with arrogance. âIâve already had her, and you still want her?â
The words hung in the air, sharp and biting.
Fannieâs and Jettâs faces tightened at the mention of that incident. It was a wound neither of them had fully healed, and Bobbyâs insistence only made it sting more.
âThat day mustâve burned you up inside, huh?â
âBobby!â Fannieâs voice cracked like a whip. âEnough already!â
Bobby turned to Jett, his eyes gleaming with malicious amusement. âYou heard all that? I can keep going if you want. After all, Iâm not the one who looks like a fool.â
Jett clenched his fists. Without another word, he swung at Bobby, his fist connecting with Bobbyâs face in a single, powerful strike.
