âLetâs go,â Jett said, leaning over to fasten her seatbelt. âThe movieâs about to start.â
There hadnât been many good films in the past couple of years, so they figured a comedy would be a perfect choice for some laughs.
After the movie, they went to a nice restaurant in the mall.
Sitting at the table, Jett pulled out a long box from his coat. Inside was a necklace.
âI saw this on a business trip and thought itâd be perfect for you,â he said, a soft smile on his lips.
As she lifted the lid, the necklace sparkled beautifully, and Fannie couldnât help but picture Jett carefully selecting this masterpiece from dozens of others on the shop counter.
âThank you. I really like it,â she said, her eyes bright with appreciation.
Jett shook his head with a playful grin. âYouâre doing it again. Fifi, you donât need to be polite with me. Dulce never is.â
Fannie blinked, a bit confused. âI just think itâs important to let you know your efforts are appreciated.â
Setting down his utensils, Jett clasped his hands and smiled at her. âIâve already gotten more than enough in return, so thereâs no need to thank me every time.â
Fannie closed the box gently. âAre you sure?â
âIâm sure.â
Fannie nodded thoughtfully, a small smile playing at her lips.
âDoes that mean you donât want the gift Iâve prepared for you?â
âYou got me a gift?â
Jettâs eyes widened, the glint of excitement quickly replacing the calm heâd tried to maintain. Despite his earlier comment about not needing anything, who wouldnât enjoy a surprise, especially from someone special?
Fannie, smiling, nodded. She had saved up her salary for three months to buy him a watch. It wasnât from a high-end brand, but she had put a lot of thought into finding one that offered the best value for the money. When Dulce saw it, she insisted it would look perfect on Jett, reassuring Fannie that she had chosen well.
Just as Fannie was about to hand over her gift, her phone rang.
âSorry, I have to take this. Itâs my boss.â
âSure. Go ahead.â
Fannie rose from the table and went to the restroom to answer the call.
âWhatâs going on between you and Bobby, Fannie?â her boss asked without preamble.
âBobby?â Fannieâs confusion was clear. Why was her boss bringing him up?
âWhat is this about?â
âCheck Twitter. Pictures of you and Bobby leaving the hotel one after the other are going viral now!â
Fannie felt a rush of shock, like sheâd been hit over the head. She had been so careful.
