Shawn paused, considering this, though he didnât believe he was to blame. Looking at Ferris, he challenged him.
âAre you saying this is my fault?â
Ferris hesitated, recalling the mess Lina had caused in the past.
âLook, man, I didnât mean it like that. Iâm sorry! Letâs just chalk this up as one of those dark tales.â
âYeah,â Shawn muttered, his irritation barely hidden.
Ferris clapped Shawn on the shoulder and added, âIâm off to look for Lily. You better head back. Your in-laws-to-be are probably waiting.â
Meanwhile, back in the private room, the group had finally come to an agreement on something and was eager to hear Shawnâs opinion. The date they had chosen was just rightânot too soon, not too lateâsatisfying everyone involved. Shawn had no intentions of upsetting this delicate balance.
Katherine, however, picked up on his distraction.

As evening descended and dinner came to a close, Turner and Agate were fussing over Aurora, their affection for her evident. Joelle suggested, âWhy donât you join us for the ride? Aurora would enjoy some more time with both of you.â
âSounds good!â
At the entrance, only Shawn and Katherine remained.
âWhatâs on your mind?â Katherine asked.
Shawn shared everything about Linaâs ordeal.
âShould I have stepped in? But what does this really have to do with me?â
After hearing the story, Katherine was pleased with Shawnâs honesty.
âIf it weighs on you, Iâll go see her at the hospital on your behalf. Next time she seeks help, donât turn her awayâjust let me know. Iâm curious to see what her angle is.â
Shawn fell silent, biting his lip.
âKatherine, does this make me look weak? Am I a coward?â
With a playful roll of her eyes, Katherine teased, âYou were never my knight in shining armor.â
Adrian navigated the road carefully, his car loaded to capacity with everyone inside. Aurora nestled comfortably in the back seat between Agate and Turner, while Joelle occupied the front passenger seat, frequently twisting around to engage with everyone behind her.
âJoelle, with Aurora getting older, itâs about time you both start thinking about elementary school, donât you think? Starting with a solid foundation is the best way to ensure progress,â Adrian said. His years as a teacher had ingrained a keen sense of planning when it came to education.
âWeâve toured a few schools already, but we havenât made up our minds yet,â Joelle replied.
âThereâs no need to hurry. You have time to think it over. Each stage of school is important,â Adrian reassured her.
Turner chimed in, âAurora is still very young. Letâs not set the same high standards for her that we did for our own daughter. Each child is unique in their capabilities.â
âYouâre right,â Agate agreed, letting the subject go as the conversation drifted elsewhere.
