âBy the way,â Ferris suddenly remarked, âI saw Lina the other day.â
As Shawnâs college friend, Ferris was well aware of Shawnâs relationship with Lina during their time together. Ferris hadnât witnessed the events that precipitated their union, but he had certainly observed the aftermath of their tumultuous breakup.
Shawn showed little reaction to Linaâs name.
âArenât you curious about what we discussed?â
âNot particularly interested.â
Ferris could sense that Shawn had moved on from the past, a development he regarded as highly positive.
âVery well, then I wonât mention anything.â
That evening, Shawn was scheduled to attend a crucial business meeting. The client he was slated to meet had a notorious reputation for being quite the party animal, and this time, their meeting was scheduled to take place at a lively bar.
âSir, can I get you anything?â A waitress in a snug uniform stood by Shawnâs side. The ambiance of the place felt rather dubious, with waitresses donning black stockings and miniskirts.
Shawn glanced at her briefly before looking away.
âNo, thank you. You can go.â
âShawn?â
Shawn looked up and met the surprised expression on Linaâs face. He couldnât help but give her a once-over. During her junior year internship, Linaâs first professional gift had been a thoughtful gesture from Shawn. As a distinguished top student, she had a promising future ahead of her.
But now, seeing her reduced to waiting tables in a bar, Shawn couldnât help but feel a twinge of sympathy.
Seated across from him, Shawnâs client was flanked by two women, intently scrutinizing the silent interaction between Shawn and Lina.
âMr. Watson, do you know her?â
Shawn maintained an air of indifference, averting his gaze as if Lina were nothing more than an unfamiliar face.
âNo.â
Linaâs heart ached, as if a fragment had been wrenched away, leaving behind a raw, bleeding wound.
âI seeâ¦â The manâs lecherous gaze had been fixated on Linaâs legs since the very beginning.
Despite the weight of Shawnâs dismissive attitude, Lina steeled herself, refusing to linger in disappointment.
âIâll be on my way now.â
âDonât go!â The man rose with his drink in hand. âWhy not join me for a drink?â
Lina averted her gaze.
âI donât consume alcohol.â
âWhatâs so difficult about that? Have a drink, and Iâll give you five hundred dollars!â
