âIsnât this enough?â
âI wonât leave until I see Mom! Youâve kept me from Ryland, fine, but why canât I see Mom? Since youâve pushed me away from Ryland, stop meddling in my life!â
Wadeâs hand, previously in his pocket, tightened into a fist. Every step he had taken was for Chris.
Even though Chris couldnât grasp his intentions, Wade had no regrets. Yet, hearing Chris express his desire to not be meddled with left him feeling alone and betrayed.
âKeeping you from her is for your own good.â
âFor my own good?â Chris straightened, towering over Wade by half a head, despite his slim frame. âMaking decisions for me isnât helping if you truly care about my well-being. Iâm already a burden. Wouldnât it be better if I were gone sooner? Think about all the people who have died because of me. Think about all the ones Iâve failed. Is this really what you consider being âfor my own goodâ?â
Wade held Chris firmly by the shoulders.

There was a moment of silence as Chris looked into Wadeâs eyes.
âI really miss Mom, Wade. I want to see her.â
Chrisâ gentle, pleading voice always managed to move Wade.
âThere are things Iâd rather you not face, Chris.â
Shock registered on Chrisâ face, followed by disbelief.
âWade, has something happened to Mom?â
Wade looked down, his silence weighing heavily.
Chris felt a premonition growing within him, fueled by Wadeâs reluctance to speak.
âTell me what happened! Donât keep it from me!â
Wade had always treated Chris like a child, protecting him from the harsh realities of life and death. He never wanted to see Chris distressed or broken.
âStop asking, Chris.â Wade pulled out his phone.
âLetâs act as if this never happened. Once weâre home, youâre to stay there and not go anywhere without my say-so.â
A sense of dread began to creep into Chrisâ thoughts, becoming more intense with each passing moment.
âI wonât go anywhere!â
Wade lost his patience.
âWade Potter!â
It was the first time Chris had ever used his brotherâs full name. Up until now, Chris had always done as Wade directed, never questioning his decisions.
Now, defiantly stepping closer to Wade, this was Chrisâ first real challenge to his brotherâs authority.
âStop treating me like Iâm still a kid. I need to knowâwhat happened to Mom?â
Chrisâ gaze sharpened, making it clear to Wade that he could no longer keep the truth hidden.
Taking a moment to steady himself, Wade responded calmly, âSheâs dead.â
âWhat?â
