âNow, if we can just locate Ryland, our circle will be complete.â The three men offered each other support.
âWeâll find him. Wade wonât be able to hide forever.â
âJoelle, is it okay if I call you that?â Allie asked in a low, gentle tone.
Joelle regarded Allie as remarkably perceptive for her age. Perhaps her lifeâs trials had molded her into someone who mastered the art of winning people over with charm and good manners.
âOf course, you can.â Joelle nodded.
âSo, youâre really Rafaelâs ex?â Allieâs cheeks turned a soft pink as she nodded.
âHow did you two get together?â
âI made the first move.â
âReally?â Joelleâs curiosity was piqued. âThatâs the last thing Iâd have expected!â
âIt feels like Rafael isnât that into me, though.â
Joelle reassured her. âDonât worry about that. What matters is how happy you are together.â
Allie looked hopeful. âJoelle, could you help me? How do I get Rafael to like me more?â
âWait, me?â Joelle gestured to herself, clearly caught off guard.
âYes,â Allie admitted boldly. âI know you once had a marriage with him. Iâd really like to understand him better.â
Joelle ran her fingers through her hair, her expression tinged with uncertainty. âRafael is quite set in his ways. He appears gentle, yet heâs the most challenging of the three to persuade. Once his decision is made, it rarely changes.â
Allie considered Joelleâs observation, finding truth in her words. âHow can I possibly get him to like me then?â
Joelle exhaled slowly, a look of sincerity in her eyes.
âAllie, the most important thing in life is to embrace your real self. If someone doesnât appreciate you for who you are, itâs not worth altering your essence just to gain their approval.â
Allieâs gaze filled with respect as she nodded in agreement.
âJoelle, Rafael was right about you. You really are kind-hearted. Iâve never had anyone speak to me with such honesty.â Joelle felt a warm grip on her arm as Allie held on.
âNow, tell me honestly, do you have feelings for Rafael?â
âAbsolutely! He was my dadâs private doctor. He would visit every evening to check on my dadâs health, and Iâd always find an excuse to bring in coffee just to see him.â
At the mention of Allieâs father, Joelleâs smile faltered slightly. She pondered what Rafael and Allie might have discussed, especially since Dalton was responsible for the death of Rafaelâs father. Given Rafaelâs moral convictions, how could he ever look past that with Allie?
Stealing a glance behind her, Joelle noticed Rafael deep in conversation with Adrian and Michael, seemingly at ease. Maybe he and Allie had come to an understanding behind closed doors.
âJoelle?â
Joelle snapped back to the moment.
âIâm not the best at chasing after people, yet I believe that sincerity is met with sincerity, and time will reveal oneâs true nature.â
